ok so i havent been here in over three weeks so i havent been up to date on the signings but im gonna say that our D-Line needs a big run stuffer and i don tknow if sioni pouha is gonna get the job done. our linebackers are fantastic and i can also say that our safeties are very solid. I believe our corners are good just the way they are. If Belichik can do it with his players, so SHOULD Mangini. Let me know what you think bout this and state your opinions
I agree, a big run stuffing NT is an immediate need. Look for the Jets to sign Buckner, Wilkinson, or Jackson, or even a June 1st cap casulty. We also could use a pass rushing LB. The secondary should be fine. The 2 biggest concerns are pass rush and a big NT.
The complete lack of a pass rush is a far greater concern, IMO, than the supposed lack of a run stuffer. Where are the sacks and pressures going to come from??
Buckner played the UT if I'm not mistaken. While it'd be nice to get one of those guys for a year or two.. If Robertson doesn't work out we need to find a true 3-4 nose tackle quick or I'd say goodbye to the scheme ever working. Every successful 3-4 team has pro-bowl type players at the position. La'Roi Glover Casey Hampton Jamal Williams Ravens had Kemeatu or however you spell it.
Blitzing, my friend. With a new zone scheme in the secondary it will be much easier to cover and allow Mangini to throw many different looks at defenses. Plus we have a wide variety of linebackers, so lineman will have to see many different rushing styles.
I think,if we can PLUG the middle.......the young guys will step up......you'll see some exciting football
I still see the Jets playing a lot of 4/3 this year because Mangini has to be concerned that he really doesn't have the right personnel at NT and OLB for the 3/4 yet. The reality is that if the nose tackle can't do the job, NOTHING else works in the 3/4. You can't stop the run without cheating up the strong safety to help which hurts the coverages in the secondary. The LB's have to drop back and help fill lanes in the secondary to help compensate for the out of position safety which makes the defense vanilla and unable to blitz. For the Jets sake Mangini had better not be stubborn on the 3/4 this year and use the 3/4 as a change of pace defense with the 4/3 as the base or it could get ugly. That stubborness is a legitimate problem as I remember Richard Seymour saying last year that he was disappointed that it took the veteran members of the Patriots defense over a month to convice Mangini to abandon the bend but don't break defense that had worked in 2004 but didn't work anymore in 2005 with Rodney Harrison out and replace it with the blitz defense of 2003. Once he made the change it was like night and day and the Patriots D went from one of the worst defenses in the NFL to one of the best in the second half--but Mangini's stubborness cost the Patriots in the meantime.
We can only hope he learned from his experience - he seems like a smart guy so I don't doubt he did until he proves otherwise. I see the same issues you've all already pointed out with a 3-4 as well as a lack of true 3-4 outside linebackers. Even if we did have all the pieces to the 3-4 puzzle Mangini obviously wants it would take some time for the team to really play well together in the new defense. All I'm hoping is that we see consistent improvement throughout the season. It's probably going to be ugly on defense and offense in the beginning :-(.
Why do you keep saying "our"??? Anyone here for more than a year knows you are a Pats fan... You used to have a PAts helmet as your avatar...come on...
We are going to be a based 4-3... And use the 3-4... Its too soon to make that transition to a 3-4 so quickly... Well atleast at the begining of the season.
Do you have any links to this Richard Seymour convinvcing Mangini to change bit? I'm not doubting you, I just want to read more about it - I haven't heard anything about this.
he doesn't care so much about wat he uses but hell use the best thing possible in any given situation. Im sure hell have alot of special packages
No links but it was in the Boston papers at the time. It was just an offhand comment after a game but Seymour surprised me with his candor. After a dominating performance by the D, the reporter was apparently trying to get Seymour to reinforce what a stroke of genius it was for Mangini to change up and start blitzing. Knowing what had really gone on behind the scenes, it must have hit a nerve with Seymour because any criticism of coaches is really unusual in NE. Seymour didn't say that he personally changed Mangini's mind, he said that a group of veterans, including himself (assume Bruschi and McGinest were the other two), had been trying unsuccessfully for over a month to get Mangini to change defenses. It didn't come across as vindictive or Seymour questioning Mangini's ablility to coach but Seymour sounded exasperated at Mangini's stubborness against changing a defense that was failing badly. I have to assume that as a first year DC that Mangini probably felt that his authority was being challenged by the players when things were going badly and overreacted a bit. Hopefully it was a learning experience for Mangini and as head coach he'll be more confident allowing him to be more responsive to his players in NY.
I said something similar a couple months ago. The worst thing we could do is force ourselves into a 3-4 without the proper personnel. It'd make for comical creamings that I'd prefer to not witness. My doctor has been pretty strict with me lately, and if I'm going out, I'm doing it lying on a mattress-sized pizza with the Norwegian gymnastics team, a twelve-pack, and Season One of Deadwood.
I think this year will be a struggle..... if we stay with the 4-3, where is the pass rush? If we use the 3-4, we don't have a NT to anchor it against the rush. It's a transition year, a rebuilding year, and the bottom line is we don't have the players for either scheme at this point.
