Yankees (21-9) @ Detroit (17-14) - Game 1: Monday 7:05 pm Sergio Mitre, RHP (0-0, 2.79) vs. Dontrelle Willis, LHP (1-1, 3.99) - Game 2: Tuesday 7:05 pm Javier Vazquez, RHP (1-3, 9.78) vs. Rick Porcello, RHP (2-3, 7.50) - Game 3: Wednesday 7:05 pm TBA vs. Jeremy Bonderman, RHP (1-1, 5.74) - Game 4: Thursday 1:05 pm TBA vs. Justin Verlander, RHP (3-2, 4.50) -------------------------------------------------------------------- I think it will split 2-2
I'm semi-dreading this series. It's only May, so it isn't a huge deal, but I'm thinking we'll at best split it. Mitre is on a low pitch count (I think I read 65-70 pitches.) That's a lot of pen work tonight. Then Vagquez follows him. So two days in a row we won't have our starter get through the 5th. I'm looking at two losses in the first two games. I'm kind of holding out hope that Petttitte will pitch in this series. Preferably in game 3. We can hit Bonderman, and Pettitte, even if not 100%, can beat the Tigers with run support. That would allow Hughes to match up with Verlander, which is a matchup I'd really like to see. The pen is going to be the story of this series. If we can keep Robertson's utter suckage off the mound, we can win at least two of these games. Can't wait to see Phil Coke. In about a quarter of the innings he pitched last year (15.1/60,) he's currently at around a quarter of last year's ERA (1.76/4.50.) He's given up about a third the number of hits (15/44,) but only a tenth the number of runs (3/30.) AJax should be fun to watch too. Well, maybe not "fun." Who'd we trade them for again? I'm sure Johnny Damon will be happy to say hi while we're in town.
Im dreading that we traded AJax. The kid has been an absolute stud thus far, and his plate discipline is only getting better. I have a feeling this will end up being a deal the Yankees wish they could take back in a few years. I like Granderson though, we just need to keep him on the field. Damon, thanks but no thanks. Phil Coke involved in this deal pissed me off. Why? Just....why? I dunno, I opposed it then, I hate it even more now. That said, I don't think the Yankees come away with this series. Mitre and Vasquez scare me, and Hughes has to go up against the tough Verlander. I also can see a split, at best.
He's giving up hits at a greater rate than last year (and walks at a greater rate than last year), but somehow fewer runs? Yeah, that's not gonna last. His one save situation so far this year resulted in a blown save.
Yeah, well I already regret trading AJax, and did even when it first happened. I like Granderson, but it was a poor trade, especially when you look at Coke right now. As for Damon, who would you rather have in left field right now: Thames, or Damon? Winn or Damon? Who would you rather have at DH? You might say "Nick Johnson," but the shitbag isn't healthy. And even so, Damon has an OPS of .840. Nick Johnson? .693 According to Mark Feinsand, Hughes will line up with Bonderman, and CC will face Verlander. I give us a reasonable chance to split the series now. I'm still not overly confident, but those two pitching matchups aren't bad.
I didn't know what to think of the AJax trade initially, and I'm down with Granderson, but right now it's pissin me off. AJax is mashin'. I think Granderson will be good for 20+ HR and 70+ RBI if he can stay healthy, plus good defense.
Oh shut up. Damon put a nice bat on it, hopefully Robertson and the rest of the bullpen can keep this close..
Wow, that sucked. Gardner lost the ball. Actually it looks like he never could see it. I wonder WTF the twilight looked like that made it so hard to pick up....
