Let's have everyone come down from the ledge and take a look at the Jets now compared to the end of last season. I think the Jets are a better team

    Let's go position by position:

QB - Sanchez will be one year older and more experienced. A veteran back up would be a welcome addition over Clemens. Upgrade because Sanchez is no longer a rookie and had the benefit of 3 playoff games (5 actually, if you count the last two regular season must win games)

RB - the Jets replaced an aging Jones with Greene (not LT); LT and McKnight replace the one-legged Washington as the 3rd down back. Richardson is back at FB with Connor is the waiting room. (Upgrade- TJ is done and Washington likely is too)

WR - Edwards and Cotchery are back and Homes was added to the top 3. Smith is now the #4 and could be the KR as could HHenry (Smith did not look too bad as the KR at the end of last year). (Major upgrade)

TE- Keller and Hartstock are back (status quo)

OL - Slausen/Ducesse replace Faneca. Ferguson, Mangold, Moore, and Woody are all back. (The LG spot is a ?, but I trust Callahan, Schotty, and Ryan).

K - Feely replaced by Folk. This one is a little shaky, but if Folk's off year was due to the hip injury and he is back to his 07-08 form, this could work out well)

DL - Ellis, Jenkins, Devito, Pouha are back. Moving Gholston to DE with a pay cut may help. The loss of Douglas and Green are not a problem. Add Taylor as a DE/OLB . Is Pitoitua ready to contribute? ( upgrade)
LB - Thomas, Pace, Harris, Scott are back and add in Westermann (status quo for a strong unit)

DB - CB- replaced Sheppard with Cromartie; replaced Strickland with Wilson. Lowry returns. Add in the best CB on the planet in Revis. S - replaces Rhodes with Pool/ Smith and Leonard and Ihedigbo (upgrade)

PR- Wilson was very good in college

    P - Westerman

What is all the moaning about??? The 2010 Jets are a better team on paper than the 2009 Jets. The losses of a 32 year old RB who looked slow, an injured 3rd down back and KR, and an aging OL who could not protect the passer are not going to negatively impact this team.

I'd be more comfortable with another power RB as a backup.

Agreed for the most part. We downgraded at S (Rhodes to Pool/Smith) and LG (Faneca to a rookie) but I can easily see Pool/Smith and Ducasse playing well this season to wipe away that blow, plus Rhodes was arguably the weak link in the base defense last season. We've upgraded at WR, OLB, and biig time at CB, plus a second year Sanchez and we have a lot to look forward to this season. We will contend for the AFC East crown.

    This is our weakest link.

The guy gave up more sacks than any other guard in the NFL. A downgrade would be signing this guy:

slausen and ducesse are our weakest links (obviously because they are inexperienced)

but that's not a horrible weakest link

I understand that but he was still a beast in the run game and an accomplished veteran. I like the Ducasse pick but stepping in right away after facing only Div II guys to this point, could be a rough transition. It's a realistic concern.

We really are in trouble if Jamal Westerman is our punter  :breakdance:

I also question you saying our DL has been upgraded. Granted Big Jenk is back, but the rest of the line is getting older and older. We need to go with some DE's next year.

i loved the jets offseason until the draft hit

dumping thomas in favor of lt is just dumb although i coulda lived with it but trading leon for nothing and then cutting faneca to save 2 million is ridiculous

i love the jets but these moves will haunt em

Stop talking from your ass and actually research the moves we did and you will realize that they are good football and financial moves.

We look considerably stronger now than we did the day after the afc championship game...that being said, i still wonder what our roster would be like if there were no restrictions on our signing players due to being a top 4 team...

I still want to see a safety (Sharper?) and I wouldnt mind to get a DE/DT (John Henderson?)

and to adress this ^ I know hes a RFA but I think Jerious Norwood could be a good fit, yes hes had injury issues but when hes healthy hes solid in that back up role

If I had to rate it by position.

QB - 2009: C- regular season.. too many interceptions, issues with sliding resulting in injury, forced too many passes. B+ for the maturity and poise he showed in the playoffs. Granted, he wasn't asked to do too much, but his performance spoke for itself.

2010: B. He's gained weapons in Santonio Holmes and a check-down guy in LT. Going by the talent he showed in the playoffs, I think Sanchez has a very solid year. Nothing out of this world, but a 20 td 15 int year I think should be the ballpark figure.

RB - 2009: A. TJ ran for almost 1500 yards, and Shonn Greene exploded in the playoffs. LW is now gone but he was a non-issue for the last 10 games anyway with a mangled leg. Teams couldn't stop the run until TJ wore down and Greene was injured.

2010: A-. I think we downgrade slightly here. Faneca left and could throw a monkey-wrench in the glue that is the OL. Our leading rusher in TJ is gone, as is LW. With Greene leading the pack and LT/McKnight to spell him, the running attack has changed shape a bit. This will be the biggest question mark on offense. Could be a home-run, or if Greene goes down with an injury could spell disaster.

WR - 2009: C-. Sanchez was a rookie, Edwards had a sub-par year for a player of his calibre, and Keller only came into his own in the playoffs. Cotchery was very solid all season. Passing game overall played 2nd fiddle to an excessive rushing attack.

2010: B+. Receiving corps has improved with additions of LT and Holmes, giving Sanchez a check-down option and a former superbowl MVP. The assortment of talent looks promising with Edwards as a deep threat, Cotchery will remain as a clutch go-to guy, and Holmes will be a threat underneath and with YAC.

    OL - 2009: A. Speaks for itself.

2010: B+. (Potential A+) If the Ducasse/Slauson switch pan out successfully, the Jets may improve on an already dominant offensive line. If the opposite occurs and we're left with a massive liability at guard, the passing/rushing attack will suffer.. as will the locker room. This was a huge risk vs reward move by Rex and Tanny, fingers crossed at this point.

K - 2009: A-. Feely was solid all year and played with a lot of heart for a kicker. Epitamized what the new look Jets are looking for in a player.

2010: B. Folk has shown hints of stardom, but also went through spans of horrid play. I'm thinking that he will come back to form with his mechanics fixed and the ghost of Jerry Jones out of his head during kicks.

DL - 2009: B. Jenkins out for a good part of the season, again. DeVito and Pouha stepped in and did a phenominal job considering the expectations. What could have been a collapse with Jenkins being out dug up a couple of gems from our depth chart.

2010: B. Douglas looks like he won't be back, but Jenkins will. The Gholston experiment takes shape at DE, which should work out better than the ghost we saw at OLB.

LB - 2009: B+. Scott, Harris, and Pace had very good years, the only flaw being a lack of pressure from a dominant pass rusher. Blitz packages worked well but often involved sending 6 or 7 at the quarterback.

2010: A-. Addition of Jason Taylor should be an immediate improvement. Blitz packages should be more effective with the upgrades in secondary.

DB - 2009: A-. Revis had a historic season, everyone else was fairly average if not sub-par. Rhodes was non-existant for a while. Weakness in the secondary was exposed by Manning and led to the Jets super-bowl run ending in Indy.

2010: A+. Additions of Cromartie, Pool, Wilson, and Warren bolstered an already very-stout secondary. If all goes to plan, this defense may be legendary.

P - 2009: C-. Weatherford wasn't very good. Not much else to add here.
2010: C. Weatherford had his heart fixed. That's the only improvement.

or another player that I think could fill in real well in that backup pwer runner role is Ladell Betts. I really liked him in washington and he had half the talent the whole time there that he would in NY

I mean the one year they actually gave him the rock all year in 06 he put up 1,100 yards

Richardson and Connor aren't enough power?

How about we line Ducasse up in the Dwayne White roadgrader formation?

The Jets are much more talented then they were before. People are concerned about chemistry issues but I just don't see it. Leon wasn't there most of last season. We lose Faneca, ok...We lose TJ...but LT is supposedly a great teammate and leader.

My 2 major concerns on this team is losing Shonn Greene or Revis to injury. Greene is important to our ground and pound philosophy. I know we will throw more but I don't trust LT to carry the load and I have to see McKnight before I judge him. We know what would happen without Revis.

    1. The period for signing restricted free agents ended March 15. We can't touch him now unless he is released

    2. "When Healthy" has been an extremely rarer occurrence. I'm surprised the Falcons even extended him an offer.
