Spoke with him at the Rutgers spring game Saturday, told him he needs to make Gholston's money since he has more sacks than him and he laughed his balls off. He then said it's pretty much super bowl or bust. Awesome guy, hope he gets to see more of the field. Other news I found out Kyle Wilson will wear #20 for us, don't know if that's been noted as of yet.
I would have to imagine he's a total outsider lol, he makes more money than 90% of them and produces 10% as much as they do. I could see him hanging with the long snapper.
Apparently not... if he's getting ripped on by an UDFA that basically was scratched or playing special teams last year...
Exactly. If anyone on this board had to pick between Gholston and Westerman, everyone with a functioning brain is taking Jamaal.
Jamaal Westerman is the reason why we didn't take another pass rusher in the draft. We passed on Hughes, Kindle, Sapp, Worilds & Lane. He has one year in the system already and is probably going to be replacing Bryan Thomas. Basically doing what Gholston couldn't
Was he really given a shot? I am not saying he is going to the pro bowl but when given an opportunity he did always show something. He had 3 consecutive games with a sack (the 2 last preseason and the opener vs. Houston). Made many big hits on special teams. The guy is a player. Ryan did everything to give Gholston the opportunity to succeed. With Gholston switching to DE means Westerman's playing time will increase.
Agreed, I am very excited to see Westy in both the inside and outside spot... getting some rotational time rushing the passer.
He's going to be a nice player, and Kenwin Cummings and Josh Mauga are both guys who have some ability as well and a year under their belt. I like our depth. -X-
Whenever I read Jamaal's name that extra A always makes think of how Sean Connery says it in Finding Forrester. Jamaahhl.
We have 2 starters on the roster - Bryan Thomas and Calvin Pace - and Jason Taylor was brought in as situational pass rusher. Westerman seems like he proved enough to be a solid rotational player. Some people kept denying the idea that the Taylor signing didn't change their team's draft philosophy. I think the 2010 draft proves that Tanny's statement about BPA versus need was a pile of horse dung. We filled needs at CB, G, RB and FB. All of those positions are the Jets' bread and butter. Running, blocking for the runner, and Rex's pet position at cornerback. I could see us going OLB in the first if some blue chipper like Graham had fallen, but after the first round, but when you listen to the post-draft pressers, you know the direction they wanted to take in the draft. The Jets didn't seem to place a whole lot of priority on a pass rusher in the draft because of it. I think there's some validity to the idea that Westerman bolstered the LB corps enough to focus on other areas in the draft.
Weren't some board members trying to argue that the addition of Jason Taylor had NO EFFECT on our draft plans? I think the way the draft turned out proved you right.
Well, there's always the BPA fallback argument of "all of the best pass rushers on the Jets' board were gone whenever we picked", but then we traded up for 2 runningbacks same same time we were hammering out trade talks with Seattle, and drafted a BPA OL-man minutes before we cut Faneca... so I guess that whole BPA Trumps Need argument kind of went down the turlet.
