Here's what Nick Mangold posted on Twitter about it today: nickmangold I know it's a business but after 2 years with a guy and then not to have him at workouts is rough. This one is going to take some time
I appreciate the thoughtful responses, it's a breath of fresh air around here. I don't think there is too much more to say on these issues.
Saying we gave away Leon for nothing is just plain ignorant. I loved Leon as much as anyone, but we got the best blocking fullback in this draft. We are a running team and will be as long as Rex is here probably. Plus, the guy is going to be great on special teams, which I think we would all agree we could definitely use.
That's not what he's saying. He's saying the circumstances forced the unusual catch, and that a solid WR wouldn't have been any better equipped to catch it in standard fashion.
so we couldn't possibly have moved into that spot w/ giving away Leon int he deal? We got Leon w/ a 4th rd pick, he played much better thana 4th rd pick and we essentially traded him away for a 6th rd pick as we traded him and a 7th for a 5th. We gave him away. Thank you, he needs his own personal interpreter.
No, they couldnt get up into that spot without trading Leon. What would they have offered? Take into account the reports that the Jets 1) don't believe Leon will be ready to start the season and 2) won't regain his previous form.. plus the fact that they wouldnt have brought him back for the 2011 season anyway AND already drafted his replacement in the 4th round, this move makes plenty of sense.
their 5 and 7 or their 7 and a late rd pick next year, they could have made it work if they really wanted to.
So then it really doesn't matter who made that catch as long as there was a WR. Basically they needed to carry the same #of WRs on the roster. Not having a shitty WR whose only prior contribution was on special teams and never went on to catch another pass in his career wouldn't have stopped that play from happening, which is all I can get out of that argument. If he wants to argue that Leon could offer this team something when he finally returns to full health because of his skill set that's one thing but to say that one throw-away player who was never know for his skills at his given position was the sole reason that play was made, which is all I can get out of this sentence: A better receiver might have done a lot of things differently on that play which would have made that catch a lot easier. The fact that it was made by such a poor position player certainly makes it all the more memorable but to say that Tyree being David Tyree is what gave that play the potential to occur the same way that Leon being who he is could give the Jets a better shot at a huge play, which was his original argument. David Tyree trapping that ball against his helmet is a one-and-a-million shot and even less likely because he is such a terrible WR and was notorious for his problems with reigning in passes. Leon was a physical phenom and it is possibility of the return of those traits that make him potentially deadly to defenses. If you're going to use David Tyree as an example of a potential big play, you would be much better served saying that even someone like Tony Richardson or John Conner or Matt Mulligan could be a source for a game or championship winning play based on the "hey, you never know who" principle. Comparing him to Leon is a fucking useless argument. ..that is of course if you believe that Leon is going to return to his full form this season. If you're like me and think that he'll be on the PUP list for most of it and struggle against live competition for a while because that's what happens during the recovery process for an injury like this than, yea, comparing him to Tyree is perfect. Because if you can dream it, someone else who has never met you can do it!
You don't understand the point, one big play from leon could have made bringing him back worth it. We draft players in an effort to win a championship, if leon helped us do that it's worth it. Again, there are no guarantees either way but the hypothetical I used was if NYG got rid of Tyree OR if they didn't play him in the SB b/c he had an awful week of practice. The guy did nothing all year but that one play helped them win the SB. It's crazy to think we could have moved up a few spots in rd 5 w/o having to give up leon Washington How long have you been following football?
Maybe you are the one who doesn't follow football. Because the Jets did not have a 5th round pick this year to move up from. When they made the trade they had Just a 7th round pick left. You can't move up to the 8th pick in the 5th round without giving up something of consequence this season, unless you overpay and give up something like a 3rd rounder next year.
Junc, how does David Tyree, a special teams coverage ace with little to no prior contribution to the offense actually compare to the injured remains of a pro-bowl kick returner whining about his contract and forcing himself off of the team? Tyree was never in danger of getting cut or traded that season, nor was he in danger of being deactivated before the game since he was the special teams ace. We can play this game all day long: What if the 49ers couldn't trade up for Jerry Rice? What if the Patriots traded Richard Seymour when he started asking for a new contract? What if they never traded for Moss and Welker? What if the Steelers traded away Ben Roethlisberger because of the first rape accusation? What if Rob Morris never returned to the Colts' defense in 2006? What if I step on a earth worm while I walk out of my house? Considering all we had left was a 7th round pick at the time, yea, it's pretty crazy to think that we could move up to Seattle's spot without giving them anything they actually wanted. How long have you been watching the draft.
I loved Leon. My friend used to work for him, and I went to four games in 2008 with tickets provided by Leon. I got to know his wife and son, and he was always very generous and nice to me. He used to give his building superintendent tickets every week and wouldn't hesitate to get anything signed for him. He was a really cool guy and I'm going to miss going to games and meeting the players friends and families. That was really cool. That said, we can't discount his leg injury and put any faith in his healthy return, and we can't give him the long term deal he wants, and I think part of this was a little bit of us doing the right thing by him. McKnight has his warts, but he's also much younger and very explosive. He offers more long term than Leon does short term. -X-
I'm so glad the draft is over so people can worry about the games instead of drooling over prospects that may or may not pan out. In the next few years we'll see the draftnicks eager to get rid of this year's draft class to get more picks. A deal like that could easily have been made, it's not like moving into the 1st rd. It was just an example of how one play can make a season, if leon made one big play to help us win a huge game en route to doing some great things in January it would ahve been worth it to keep him. MBGreen discussing logic:rofl: when MB is agreeing w/ you it means you are most likely wrong(which we already knew).
You are underestimating the difficulty of moving into the 5th round. Sometimes it takes a guy like Santonio Holmes to do it. We gave up FAR less with severely injured Leon.
Rex and Tanny have to know something we don't or else they wouldn't have cut him to save $2 mil. They must have a lot of faith in Ducasse and Slauson or they must feel that Faneca is really washed up. All I know is that they are confident that Ducasse and Slauson will compete for the LG job and we'll be fine.
reality says "hi", junc. Oh..and btw, junc....when it comes to "logic"...I am the Leonard Nimoy, and you are the ekaarons. Let's be accurate now. and here's a couple emoticons too.....cause i know they amuse you....  :rofl2:
