Jets: Can the defense get up to speed?
    May 24, 2006

Questions, questions: All 32 NFL teams have them heading into the 2006 season. Today, we're addressing the Jets' burning question:

Can the team keep up with its defensive changes?

When a team goes through a forgettable injury-riddled season that leads to a coach being traded and a bit of a rebuilding process, there is a tendency to want to make wholesale changes.

With the injuries to Chad Pennington and Curtis Martin and major line worries last season, the offense certainly needed quite an overhaul, and that's come through the draft and free-agent market.

The defense, however, has a challenge to adjust to a Bill Belichickian 3-4, a movement that the Jets have followed by hiring Eric Mangini, something the Dolphins did a year earlier by hiring Nick Saban. The big difference is the Jets are not prepared to succeed in making such a switch this season.

Jonathan Vilma, who has Ray Lewis-like Miami-product promise in the middle, now won't have as much room to make his typical bevy of big plays. Dewayne Robertson hasn't impressed enough to be a stud at nose tackle, and though Kimo von Oelhoffen played end in the Steelers' 3-4, he is on the downside of his career.

Also, without John Abraham, disappointing Bryan Thomas gets pushed into a key pass-rush role, which means offensive lines can afford to shade toward Shaun Ellis. The last line of pass defense, the secondary, has no sure things besides free safety Eric Coleman.

It's a common trend through the league, wholesale defensive scheme changing, but any team that does so needs to be patient. It can't teach all the old players new tricks at once, and some may never fit in. It takes making the moves for the right types of players on the market, and that takes time -- sometimes three offseasons.

Saban didn't see immediate results in Miami, and neither will Mangini's Jets or the several teams trying to bring together new defenses this season, especially with the added complexity of these schemes.

Mangini comes from the trendy coaching branch, and he has the mind-set and background to be a fine head coach in time. But considering the Jets had some problems jelling in Herman Edwards' defense and the limited improvements, the struggles on that side of the ball will be the biggest reason for another sub.-500 record.

For the first critical look at the 2006 New York Jets, go to the Jets Offseason Support Group in Pro Football War Room.

I don't agree with his detailed analysis, but the overall picture is pretty accurate. Our defense has not been as good as advertised over the past two seasons. Vilma is a talent, but he can't do it alone. Law was no good last year and who knows is Dyson will be an upgrade, Barrett is not good enough on last years form to be a starter in this league at CB and Miller is not ready. Coleman and Rhodes showed significant vulnerability, whilst Barton is coming off a nasty injury. Hobson and Thomas have never impressed me, van Oelhoffen is old, Ellis hasn't been a force at any point in his career, if you look past the numbers and consider only his impact on games. There are far too many where he is anonymous.

Other than that though, our D looks solid.

Shows you how much the writer knows.
BT will not be a pass-rushing end.
Eric Coleman is not a sure thing, especially based upon last year's performance. If anyone is a sure thing in the secondary, it would be Rhodes- and even he isn't a lock to repeat last year's performance.
Simply, it's a sucky article written by a sucky author who had nothing better to do with his time.

Every time Mangini has discussed his defensive scheme, he has said that they will play the scheme that best helps them win. If they don't have the right players for a base 3-4, then he's not going to pound round pegs into square holes. I think he'll work on implementing the 3-4, but he's not going to be stubborn about it.

I don't think we have the next incarnation of the '85 Bears on the defensive side of the football, but we'll hold our own this year and won't have a huge liability on our hands.

What makes your points any better than his? You already know for a fact that Bryan Thomas isn't going to see any DE time?

I'm just going by what the official site is telling us, along with what I've read in various articles.

    Most NFL scouts would disagree.

    Detailed analysis?

Vilma is small, who will rush the passer, etc. I'm not really moved. I personally don't love the switch to the 3-4 buit I don't think we're incapable of making it work. Our linebackers are very good and Bryan Thomas could thrive as a stand up rusher. Kerry Rhodes athleticism will be exciting on the blitz. I think we're better suited for a 4-3, but I don't think we're going to flounder in a 3-4.

Nobody in the backfield besides Erik Coleman? I'd assume Andre Dyson has more league respect than Coleman. and Rhodes was a GREAT ROOK at SS. Miller is a solid cover corner and will only get better, while Strait may at best be a good nickel, but guess what thats what he is a good nickelback. Barrett is good enough to start for half the teams, no matter what our own fans think.

we need depth but our DB's are the last of our worry on defense.

    Vinnie Iyer?

So he mentions Vilma with Ray Lewis, and that's a reason he'll struggle? Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the Ravens win a Super Bowl in the 3-4?

The Ravens were a 4-3 defense in 2000.
The front four consisted of Burnett, Adams, Siragusa, and McCrary.
The linebackers were Boulware, Lewis, and Sharper.

Why do we continuously get articles and people here stating we are moving to a 3-4. Mangini has never said that. He has said that the defensive package will be different each weak depending on the team we are playing and will consist of 4-3, 3-4, 2-6, and those amorphous looks the Patriots have. We are not movong to a 3-4 defense. We are moving to a defense that looks to create mismatches depending on the offense we are playing. This is completely different. Each player in the defense will play different roles. Bryan Thomas will likely play DE and OLB. Vilma will mostly play ILB, but may move outside or even be rover. And so on. It will make the defense much better than a stock defense because you will not be able to prepare as effectively for the Jets D, since you don't know exactly the looks you will get.

this is the most honest breakdown of our D I have read to date.

Other than the Dline LB core and our secondary and Bob Sutton our new "saviour" on defense, our d is fine =)

The author of this article obviously knows little to nothing about football, more nothing than little in fact.

I hope you're right...that would be amazing, & from what you posted that is a strong reason why i think we'll finish with a god record like 9 - 7

It's not the Jet's defense that worries me. I think they'll adapt fairly well to whatever Mangini finally decides to run. D-Rob may well not be a good NT. The Jets may have no complement to Ellis on 3rd down. Vilma may get cramped in the middle of a 3-4. May, may, may.

I'll start worrying about it when I see it in evidence on the field. For now I'm more concerned with how the Jets are going to cobble together a balanced offense with no clearcut solution at QB at the moment and a 33 year old RB. That's what I'm worried about.

Yes Jets want to play multiple defense(give teams diffrent looks) but you still need a base defense(majority time your in)
Easy you look at the Moves Jets have made this offseason and they scream 3-4. First if they were going to play a 4-3 defense you don't get rid of a J abraham.(most proven pass rusher). They have brought in The Kimo VON Oelhoffen, who your not geting to play 4-3. Hes at his best as 3-4 DE. (hes there to teach the younger players on Dline about playing DE in 3-4)
B Thomas is not playing DE, he will exclusively be used as OLB.

Jets are going to have major problems whether they run 3-4 or 4-3. They don't have any proven pass rushers in any defense. Before you give me S ellis, the personal around him for support, is alot weaker.(dreaming if you think he comes anywhere close to 10 sacks last time jets played 3-4 defense)

Coach K stick to basketball. Just joking. I Have a couple problems with your points. 1 J Miller is a solid cover Cb- are aware J Miller wears #22. You want to say J miller a great returner(when he catches the ball), than Ill buy that. Im not buying that J miller a good cover CB at this point(potentialy he could be) HE still needs alot of work at CB before you can say that. No one would consider J miller a good cover Cb in college .

A Dyson- I think your overrating his ability. Never was a big fan of his, as every game Ive seen of him, some wr was picking on him. Could be wrong but wasn't this guy sitting out there in FA(when he was cut) for a long time. Dyson to me is a # 2 Cb at best . We will examine this thread after season to see what you think of A dyson. How wrong or right I was.

D barrett- I thinks going to be Jets best Cb next season. You don't want this guy playing man to man, with the Jets pass rush now. I think he will do great in zone defense.(jets will be playing alot)

IF I was a jet fan, I would be extremely worried about Jets secondary. Jets pass rush hid the weakness of the secondary. See rams game in 2004, as just one example what happens when pass rush was missing. (Again where is the Jets pass rush coming from)
TY Law might not have been the TY law of Old ,but he stil made alot of big plays. Hard to make up that experience. Jet secondary like the rest of the defense, will take a step back, as young players are more prone to making mistakes.(at wrong time) . Thats why its called rebuilding.

I mostly agree with Raiderjoe here, but he's got to stop with the first initial stuff. It's only necessary when there are teammates with identical surnames.
