The official terms of the contract aren't out. Florio (not a great source, I know) wrote an article that says a lot of the money isn't auto-guaranteed. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/04/17/the-truth-on-the-brandon-marshall-deal/
Pretty sure they already said its 50 million over 5 years with 24 million guaranteed. Between him and Dansby its close to a 100 million with roughly half guaranteed over the next 5 years
I'm very happy we didn't get this turd, especially for the price. I'm not very happy he ended up on the Dolphins. I put the over/under at 1 year for serious legal trouble with $20 million and south beach in play.
This ............ Pre-draft the Jets are better off with their first pick, Holmes and the option to sign vs. Marshall, huge contract and no 1st rounder. It really hinges on the draft. The Jets have to make it count. They do and this trade vs. non trade really moves things to the Jets side of the ledger. Right now it is too early to tell. Holmes and Marshall are 2 different types of players. Marshall has no where near the big play capability that Holmes does. However, Marshall is a physical beast that wins most if not all 1v1 battles. Holmes is always going to have a bigger YAC and YPC statistic while Marshall is going to have 20-30 more catches, maybe more because Holmes will not be the focal point.. There is no doubt that Marshall is the better overall player. That said.............. I would argue with the ability to move Cotch to the slot that the non-trade may work out for the Jets better this year for the Jets. Sanchez throws a great deep ball and with both Edwards and Holmes stretching the field, Cotchery and Keller are going to be open quite a bit. If sanchez can learn to check down it may be ugly for the opposition. That is a giant if because he had a difficult time with that last year........... anyway my .02
Agree Phyr, Marshall (whatever the guaranteed number) is hooked up with the Phins for several years. Whatever you want to say about Santonio, the guy was a worker in practice and didn't (like a petulant child) slap balls thrown his way in practice to the turf. Can you imagine a Lawrence Taylor seeing some brat purposely knocking balls to the ground during training camp? LT would've pinned that s-0-b up against a wall afterwards and said: "not on my watch--not during my career." I'm thinking guys like Bart Scott would've done the same thing with the Jets, which is why (coupled with his solid 'work ethic' rep--vs. his off-the-field issues) Holmes might prove to be the lesser of two risks. If nothing else, the Jets retain greater draft flexiblity (pass rusher, OL/DL depth). Having said that...specifically with respect to the "D": Chad Henne has a lot of detractors on this board. I'm probably gonna catch some slack for this but I did see him bail out Michigan with some 4th qtr. comebacks. Further, in the NCAA 'skills' competition, he placed 2nd to Joe Flacco in the "arm-winging" competition (Flacco=76 yds; Henne=71). The guy as a rook sat behind Chad Pennington in Miami.....frankly, I wouldn't have minded if the Jets took a shot at him with a 2nd round pick in that previous year's draft. Say what you want, the guy threw some clutch passes in that Monday Night game in Miami when they beat the Jets. And granted their RB's had some painful 5+ yard gains, but at the same time, when we keyed on stopping Ronnie and Rickyweed, Henne lived up to his end of the bargain by connecting on a number of occassions down-the-stretch in that game not to mention that earlier bomb to Ginn? ...against whom? Aside from their wildcat running game, imho I think down the road we may end up having to focus on killing Chad Henne. And I know I'm annoyingly beating a dead horse, but maybe, just maybe, Henne's got more skills than meets the eye... (not suggesting Brady, but until Mo Lewis of the Jets flattened Bledsoe, no one really knew who that 5th rounder out of Michigan was).... Kill the QB.....Then Marshall (our DB's aside) becomes an even more non-factor.
Marshall is great, no doubt, but where's the motivation, you just gave this locker room trouble maker 24 million guarenteed and two 2nd rounders. We gpt a good locker room guy with trouble off the filed ( pot head) that is in the last year of his contract and gave up a 5th. Sounds to me like we get lucky on this one. And if he plays great, we sign him to big contract AFTER he proves himelf
^^ Holmes and Cotch are going to complement each other nicely. Their hands and feet are like velcro. Edwards, I pray Revis Christ can save ur hands.
It worked out better for the broncos IMO. Getting a 2 (44) in this deep draft plus another 2 next is better than the 1 (29) they would've gotten. More picks to make deals with too.
Edwards, Holmes, Cotch ? Marshall, Bess, Hartline How can you leave out Hartline who outweighed Edwards statistically last season?
You realize the LFins passed the ball 150 times (43%) more than the Jets last season right? Are you seriously going to try and compare Hartline to Edwards? Because if you are I know how much stock to put into your posts.
This. Faced with the choice of resigning Brick, Revis and Mangold or giving one of them up to give Marshall his big numbers, I'm fucking ecstatic that we passed on him.
Comments like these make me want the season to start NOW. However, all good things must come in time.
Statistically, I compared them. Overall Edwards is the better player when he can catch. Given Hartline was a rookie last season and had comparable numbers to Braylon, ill hold off on assumptions.
