New England cashed in their golden ticket in 2000. We chose pennington as the top QB in the draft and they took Brady in round six. Scott Pioli admits he had no idea what they had in Brady. They thought 7 other players were more important and could make a bigger impact on their team in 2000, including Dave Stachelski, and J.R. Redmond who were chosen ahead of Brady. In short, the draft is a crap shoot in a lot of ways. It's like playing the lottery. The Patriots did draft well for a lot of years. Ty Law, Mcginess, Seymore, Brussci, Colvin, ... all these guys came to them via the draft. But, the reason these guys have so much championship hardware, is because of a lottery ticket cashed in the 6th round of the 2000 draft. The same thing happened to a looser franchise know as the 49er's in the late 70's when they drafted a QB from ND late in the draft. There is a lot of luck involved with building a dynasty. If it was all genius, then Parcells and Holmgren would have 10 rings each. Check Chad's career stats and Bradys career stats: Chad: http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/187395 Brady: http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/187741 Chad has almost exactly half as many starts (which is not his fault). If you look at each category, each one of bradys stats is just about double Chads. The only differences are in overall QB rating (chad is about 10 points higher) and YPA (Yards Per Attempt). Our weak armed QB actually averages more than New Englands "gunslinger" 7.08 to 7.34 If Chad can stay healthy, he can get us to the promise land. For all those who want to give up on him, remember the imortal words of Bill Parcells, who had to remind the Dallas media 2 years ago "you can't just dial 1-800-quaterback and have a winner sent in". Chad is a winner, he deserves a fair chance. ats_suck: ats_suck: ats_suck:
Chad has almost exactly half as many starts (which is not his fault). ----------------------------- Whose fault is it?
It is a players fault that he gets injured? i have never understood this line of thinking. If he gets hurt, it's just the way the chips fall. It's no ones fault. :jets:
You also forgot that Brady has 3 Super Bowl rings and over double the number of big plays over 40 yards than Chad (36-16). Additionally, Brady has not missed a start since taking over for Bledsoe. I am not even going to bring up NE's record during that timeframe. The only way Pennington is similar to Brady is that they were both drafted in 2000. After that, the similarities end.
I'd blame half of it on the FO and the other half on Chad. As a player you know when you can go and when you cant, anyone with eyes could see he was hurting and shouldnt have been playing. As a player I would think, "hey this could be the end of my career if I go back out, say something" And dont give me the "CHADS A GAMER!" argument, cuz this is also business, which is why hes lucky to even be making any money this yr. Which he already proven he cant stay healthy, and the only land he should promise to be taking us to is the Meadowlands. We havent given up on him, were just counting him out because we need to plan accordingly, and guess what we've dialed 1-800-YAY-CHAD for 3 yrs and hes taken us as far as he ever will. Lets be honest. I sound like an asshole, but Chad is one of my all time fav Jets, but aside from that were fans of the team, and what is in the best interest for the team is to see if chad can be serviceable and find a replacement NOW, just in case he cant. If he came back this yr and won even 5 games I would be the happiest man in the world for him, but we need to plan as if he isnt on the roster, cuz if he cant come back, he wont be.
I know how you feel, i think Chad is a very rare type of leader, but I get just as frustrated each time he went down. And i get the hint everyone....Colvin was not drafted by New England...... MY BAD!!!! LOL!
Who are Mcginess, Seymore, and Brussci? I really don't think comparing Brady and Penny is going to be a compelling argument in making people trust Pennington...
The biggest dfference between Chad and Brady is Chad can only play in a run oriented offense where passing is a surpise. He cannot play in an open offense nor can he drive his team down the field in a 2 minute offense with anything but dinks and dunks. Brady is exceptional in that he can play smart ball ball control offense or he can play in a wide open gunslinger offense. If your behind by 10+ points or if you need a lot of points Brady can get it for you. If Chad is behind by 10+ points the game is basically over. Brady can also by time with his feet and keep plays alive. If Chad is rushed the best we can do is hit the checkdown man. Chad is simply very limited in what he can do and he is need of an offensive coordinator that will protect him.
Can we not compare the two? When Chad was at the top of his game he was at least as good as Brady. Obviously he's not anymore and chances are slim that he'll ever be there again. So what is the point of a comparison? If Chad somehow comes back and leads us to a winning season and/or superbowl then maybe we can talk.
Belichek is overrated--Brady has made him look good. In 2000 BB was 6-10 with the Pats starting Bledsoe. In 2001 the Pats started 0-2 when Lewis knocked out Bledsoe in game 2--Brady took over and the pats never looked back. Therefore BB was 6-12 with the Pats until the jets forced him to insert Brady.
Something I want to bring up that really bugs me. It is regarding Chad's health. People constantly talk about his inability to stay healthy. Why? Here are some things to chew on. The first injury of his career was the mangled wrist. I don't know about you guys, but I still can see the images clearly in my head of Penny going down, and the back of his hand touching his forearm. (When Matsui hurt himself recently I knew it was a break, and the first thing I thought of was Chad's injury.) Even still, he came back early. Yes, it was his other hand, but taking practice snaps in a cast is pretty damn tough. The next injury was the shoulder. Even after he got hurt, thanks mostly to poor offensive schemes, and a line that wasn't all the great, he still played out the season, and damn near took us to the AFC championship game. Then he comes back, after being cleared medically to play, and thanks to a terrible and decimated OLine he slightly tears the scar tissue again. And yet, he still came back in and tried to play. It's amazing. I want to know how many who beat up Penny for playing are the same guys who have been lighting up the boards over Abraham not playing with a spaghetti knee. As I've said a few times, I don't believe Penny will make it back this time. I thought he might up until draft weekend, and if there is anyone who is mentally up to the challenge it's Chad. I just don't think it will work out. Regardless though, he has been a ballsy bastard for the past few years. I just can't understand how so many people can beat him up for the "injury bug." I don't agree with the arguments against Abe, but I can understand them. To recap, Pennington has had two major injuries. 1) The wrist. 2) The first torn rotator cuff. The last was a tear of the scar tissue, which didn't even need a knife for surgery. None of those injuries are the result of lack of preparedness. None could be avoided. They were all situational injuries. So many people have a love jones for Santana Moss, but the guy tweaks a hammy at least once a year. That's injury prone.
Hey, I think Chad is great. As a person and a player, and he's been one of my favorite Jets since he first began starting and we got to hear more from him. But I have to tell the truth here, I believe the first shoulder cuff injury was his fault alone. He dove head-first and put his arms out ahead of himself elbows first. That was possibly one of the worst things he could have done as a QB. It's common sense. You just signed a huge contract, take care of your company's investment. The second injury seems to have been a blanket of negligence and denial from the top to the bottom, including Chad himself in the middle. He was brought back way too soon, and I think and I think the fact that his competitive spirit dominates over his sense of self-preservation helped that process along just fine.
