I'm hoping somehow Tanny can find a way to resign them all, every single one of those guys listed is younger than 27 and is a key long-term piece for this team.
i understand all these guys are great and most of those guys mentioned will require huge contracts... with that being said.... is there no way some of these guys (1 or 2) take less money to keep this amazing core together? if guys like mangold brick and revis want this team to be able to compete for years, then its up to them and their agents to make that happen... i guess well find out after next year if its all about the money or the :jets: i guess basically what im asking is if these guys do take a minor reduction in what they should be getting is it realistically possible to get all of these guys back minus one of the two major wideouts??
There is a reason behind it. Two options with both the players: Option 1: Tear up the current contract and do a brand new contract, pay millions in up front money in signing bonus etc. No idea if there would be football beyond 2010. Option2: Give them extensions on their current contract and pay the same millions up front. Problem? We can give them extensions but are limited to 110% increase in their salaries for the subsequent years. Its really not as simple as most of us think. But trust the man. He is a genius. Please do not question his contract knowledge and expertise...
Doesn't it matter how they do? This is why Tanny got these open ended questions A) if a player sucks they get rid of them and B) it also serves as motivation for players like Cromartie who has to work or go to jail and Braylon who needs to catch passes when he is wide open...
Great point B. Looks like we are picking up players in their contract year, when the motivation to perform is already there. It seems like we are making that one big push to get over the top and I wouldn't be surprised if made a splash in the draft aswell. Who knows which players would be lost next year.
I would put Edwards and Holmes in the same slot. Edwards needs to clear the air about his hands and Holmes needs to prove he can go the season sans legal problems. There is no way we keep both unless we switch our offense to something more along the lines of Arizona's which would mean Schottenheimer took another job. Having two #1 WRs is only going to be a stress on the finances and the gameplan.
You don't take an elite C over an elite LT. It just doesn't happen. Tackles are harder to find then Centers, even when they are of Mangold's character. Luckily, the Jets will resign both of those guys and revis.
Bryan Thomas, and Alan Faneca will go next year I think. How much does Faneca take up a year? I hope we can keep Holmes, and Edwards. We need to balance out our offense. It's been said 100000times this is a passing league. I do not want to become a pass first team though.
If we decide to cut Faneca (and possibly resign him to a cheaper deal) We would save $7,160,000 on the cap which is pretty good Bryan Thomas would also save us $3,700,000 on the cap; I mean desperate times if Kris Jenkins is cut (hopefully not) we would also save $4,600,000 so that's a lot of money we would potentially gain in the offseason, there's nothing we can really do about Vernon until his contract is complete, or to bite the bullet and take a cap hit Btw, that's going to be a tough one, who would you rather keep? Holmes and Braylon, which player would fit better for this team? I really like Holmes but the potential of Braylon is far greater
I can't believe we haven't cut Vernon Gholston when we have the opportunity to admit our mistake and get rid of his mammoth contract without a cap hit. He is not performing(at all) anywhere near the amount of cap space he is taking up. He will be the difference between losing somebody on that poll or cutting someone that could of stayed here but we had to because of lack of cap space. Thank god for the franchise tag, if it is still around.
If we're cutting Gholston then it needs to be now.If the cap comes back for 2011 then cutting Gholston will cost us $10,740,000 according to http://www.nyjetscap.com/vernongholston.html.It's $14,210,000 now but there isn't a cap to worry about and it frees up the money for re-signing next year. Other possible cap savings for 2011 include: LT $2,425,000 Jim Leonhard $2,000,000 101_GANG_GREEN_101 mentioned Jenkins, that saves $4,600,000.That might be worth it considering how old he is and his injury history...and we did survive without him.
HOF center is more important than stud LT. Also, if AC and Braylon Edwards live up to their billing they will move ahead of Harris (especially since we have Scott locked up. Leon shouldn't let the door hit his ass on the way out.
Yeah it's looking like Leon is becoming more and more like the odd man out, oh well 3rd down backs/Kick returners are easily replaceable However David Harris deserves to be here for a long time, he's 3 years younger then Scott and the man is a hitting machine, perfect for our defense, he will only get better as time goes But you'd really prefer A.C. over Hitman Harris? LT is the most important position on offense besides the QB position, I see them both easily being resigned, with Mangold poss being the highest paid C in the league and Brick getting a long-term deal that will rival those of Jason Peters and Jordan Gross
holy shit we need to cut Gholston. That money could be spread to Mangold, Revis, Brick, Harris, Edwards, and Holmes. lil over 2million each to add on top of their deals.
I said if he lives up to the billing (meaning pro bowl level). Harris is very good but ;ocling up Revis and another pro bowl CB across from him would be a higher priority. Of course, AC has a lot to prove before he woul get anywhere near a pro bowl again. If AC is just average, Harris would clearly be the priority.
This is assuming that the League adopts and immediately implements a hard cap. As Abyz said in another thread, it would make more sense that any new CBA includes a transitional period before hitting teams with a concrete ceiling on spending. Why would the Jets cut Leonhard?
I think Tanny is betting on there not being a cap again in the near future. Wed be freaklishly stacked for a while if thats how it goes
Leonhard is the one who sets the alignment and calls the signals for the secondary. I don't think that they would want to let him go, regardless of how much they can save but cutting him. If anything, it would be better for the team to let him play out his contract while drafting his replacement so he can teach him the assignments and how to manage them on the field.
