Deserves it's own thread. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/home_NFL.aspx Edit: I believe Ihedigbo also signed...
Leon is predictably testing the market. We knew that was going to happen as soon as the Jets tendered him with a 2nd. I never heard a peep about Smith or Edwards wanting to test FA waters, but if they did, they'd probably be talking to teams right now instead of hitting the weight room with their possibly soon-to-be-ex-teammates in March.
it's hard to decipher if Leon is testing the waters on his own accord, or if his buffoon agent is filling his head with retarded advice....I'd probably go with the latter. if Leon was smart...he'd sign the tender.....kick major ass this season....and test the UFA waters next year (if there is a season).
Check Check Check Every loose end tied up is one less distraction as we move toward winning next year's Superbowl.
Braylon Edwards has always said he wants to be here for the long term so I expected nothing less. We gave Brad Smith a chance in this league and I'm sure he appreciates everything we have done for him and vice versa. These 2 are setting a great example by putting football first and letting everything take care of itself. The money will be there as long as you put in work and improve to help this football team win some games. I hope Braylon has a great year and is on our team for years to come. On offense, he is our X factor.
Leon wanted to get fair market value last season. The Jets offered what they thought was fair and he balked. Now, the Jets had a chance to give Leon a nice chunk of dough (2.521mil) for 1 year, but no team would have given him a sniff with the 1st round tender. This move was calculated by the team, they knew his agent would want more money than the 2nd round tender and are probably using that as a gauge of how healthy Shitkeels thinks Leon really is. If teams don't offer Leon a solid contract by Tax Day, Leon can either sit out and grumble for a new contract, or take the 1 year money and play out another contract year - hopefully healthy - and earn his fair market value all over again.
I think the age of innocence for Leon's relationship with Keels is over. Leon wouldn't keep his agent for this long if Leon was not happy with the work he had done. Leon thinks he's worth more, Leon is an idiot.
I agree 100%. Remember when they compared Sproles and Leon it was like he got offended and said something like "Sproles is good don't get me wrong but c'mon man, I'm better then him". After seeing Sproles tendered to a 1st and a 3rd, even though both teams are in different situations, that must of hurt his ego. Leon wants this just as much as Keels does.
Leon has won games for this team single-handedly. He was working for the paycheck of a 4th round pick. I don't blame the guy for finally trying to get paid. His mistake (and his agent's) was trying to get more than they could the season before he became RFA in the uncapped year. He took a huge gamble, and broke his leg. He could have taken the contract for 5mil a year and then broken his leg and people on this board would be saying that Tanny overpaid for him. He could have balkied at the contract and then had a Pro Bowl season. But neither of those other 2 scenarios played out. Instead, he gambled and lost. Now Leon is 28 years old and coming off an injury and looking for a way to somehow create a nest egg for himself at a position that ages far more rapidly than any other in the league. He may have been stupid for not taking that offer last offseason, but he's smart to do what he is doing right now.
Plus, he's scraping in a cool 5mil for one season while he gets the chance to rack up some stats in a contract year and boost his worth while he gains chemistry with a talented young QB. We may end up paying a pretty penny for BE in 2011.
Speaking of gambles, would it have been smart to lock up BE now since his stock is so low? Its not like he has been a failure in the NFL based on the fact he has been surrounded by inconsistency through out his short career playing for multiple coaches, QBs and offensive systems. He has shown not only to succeed but DOMINATE in the NFL and has not had any significant injuries. I think he will have a big year.
Come on, man. The dude fucking drops passes that hit him in the hands. That's not because he wasn't surrounded by consistency, it's because he lacks concentration. He did it a number of times with the Jets this year. I hope he's going to have a big year, but he's got to prove himself this season. From what MrE says, the 2011 draft is going to be loaded with playmaking wideouts, and there will most likely be a rookie pay scale. This is BE's year to prove he is elite, or possibly hit the open market when his services won't be in as high a demand.
Well I agree with what Tanny is doing I like the prove it and I'll show you the money route. I was speaking hypothetically. He does drop passes, the Bengals playoff and the Buffalo Bill drops make me cringe. IF he corrects his concentration issue and improves his focus, he is a stud and leaves one less hole for us to fill in the 2011 draft. As of right now hes still good even with the drops. Again I think he will have a good year. Hopefully he does.
Somone should just give him an Aderoll and a smack on the ass and tell him to catch the ball... all joking aside..I think he will have a good year this year with an improved Sanchez and a year in the system and not giving him a long term deal will keep him working hard and trying to get that big deal..
We'll figure that out in about 10-14 weeks when he can actually run drills. I'm not expecting him to draw any more money than what the Jets offered him last season.
If he gets offers, you can guarantee it'll be for a bunch less money than what he was offered last season. the question is - will he sign the offer sheet? I thikn if it's reasonable, he may.
This is good as Tanny has been in the press recently talking as if Braylon might not participate. That worried me for some reason. It showed the FO and CS had little confidence BE would work hard. Especially , since his tanning buddy is is in Arizona. It shows some goodwill that he is there. He would be as good as gone next season if he didn't even if he had a stellar season. Now it completely depends how this season goes. Good.............
