ok directv has it in pretty much all their packages thats 15 million subs. dish has it in the top 200 package, they have 13.5 million subs but figure that 25% at a minimum dont have the channel. so about 10 million. higher than i thought at this point... comcast has it i believe in their digital preferred so maybe 50% of their subs... comcast has 17 million digital video subs... so lets say 12 million to make it easy. charter doesnt carry nfl network cox says 30% of its customers get the package with nfl network in it... i am not positive this is current info but i am going to give them a little boost anyway... they have 6 mill customers so ill give them 3 million. time warner from everything i am finding is still not carrying nfl network. so thats 40 million subscribers... http://tvbythenumbers.com/2008/09/10/nielsen-local-television-market-universe-estimates/5037 nielsen says that new york has 7.5 million homes la which would get the san diego market games 5.6 million san diego 1 million philly which new york usually gets 2.9 million and were at 17 million already. and thats only a small portion of what a regional game might get. there are 115 million tv homes in the us. i would say that nfl network is in only 40% of those homes. so to call it national really isnt calling a pig a pig. although the 40% number is higher than i had thought, i was assuming around 25%. "Also NFLN does not want U to buy there channel which is why TW if they agreed to carry NFLN wants to charge the consumer xtra for it & NFLN says NO to that proposal. " actually nfl network wants EVERYONE to buy their channel. they want it carried in expanded basic because then they get paid for every subscriber that a provider serves with expanded basic. although it doesnt show up on your bill as "nfl network - $4.00" trust me you are paying the 4 bucks for it. the providers are actually doing their customers a service by wanting to put it in a sports package. then only the people who want to pay for it are paying for it. now espn GETS that 4 bucks a month because they were smart and really have an audience. the nfl network is still just niche programming and isnt deserving of expanded basic status. the nfl isnt doing anyone a service by wanting to be in an expanded package.
Survived all this time without the NFL network (I have Time Warner). They are forced to televise any of the local games on basic TV so we never miss a Jets game. I can watch any videos on their website.
Nope sorry I have TW & there proposal to the NFLN is they will charge me the consumer more for it which the NFLN will not agree to which is why there has been no agreement between TW & the NFLN Somehow I also think you are blocking out all the people who flock to the bars & saloons & cannot be counted by whatever you googled. As a example year before last the GB/Dallas game was on the NFLN & as I said TW did not broadcast it & since we are 200 miles from Dallas we are NOT considered the local area of Dallas so the only way to see the game was flood the watering holes & some places according to the local papers could not accommodate all the people wanting to see that game. While this is a holiday nite game so the overall crowd would probably be lighter then if it was just a TNF game. Trust me the NFLN gets paid by the ads that they generate. the more coverage the higher they can charge. Surely the billionaire owner do not want to lose 1 cent of revenue right? That is why the NFLN exists to put more more into those owners if you did not realize it.
yeah i wasnt figuring the bar crowds as i really didnt have a way to quantify in even my own estimates. yeah twc wants to put the nflnetwork in a package that you have to pay extra for. the nfl network says no we want it put on an expanded basic which is a channel like espn, a&e, tnt. what they dont tell you is that they want to charge twc lets say 2 bucks for every subscriber who has nfl network. twc wants those who WANT nfl network to pay the extra 2 bucks. nfl network wants EVERYONE to pay the extra 2 bucks. maybe i am not explaining this properly. and its really another topic and another forum but i just want to make sure i convey the travesty that the nfl people are trying to pull in telling people that twc is screwing them.
Considering that there has not be a discernible pattern since the NFL added the third game on Thanksgiving night, I think that it is completely up open for interpretation as to who the opponent will be. There is room for some degree of speculation because let's be honest the league will be intentional about the pairing because they want to put themselves in the best position (especially since it is airing on the NFL network). Counter to that is that the league knows not to pick out the "elite" marquee games (Colts-Pats, Vikings-Packers, Redskins-Cowboys, etc) for the NFL Network because that would anger CBS FOX, ESPN and NBC. They are hesitant about this because in the next round of negotiations, these broadcast companies would have leverage in saying "why should we put down X billion dollars for broadcasting rights if you are going to take the best games anyway". I know NBC picks the best games for the "Flex" schedule (excluding Mondays) already in the later half of the season, but this taking the best games would even anger NBC if the game that week they would have wanted to flex was NFLN. Some of this of course can not be controlled as we do not what teams will excel or fail, but some rivalry and inter-division games are great pull-in for viewers even if the teams a relatively struggling. This works the same for teams with large national followings, such as the Cowboys, Dolphins, and Steelers as they will draw a sizable television audience even if struggling that season. Remember, NBC pays about the same (3.6 Billion) for the 17 regular season games they cover as CBS does (3.73 Billion) for 87 they do. Many (but of course not all) inter-division, rivalry or games involving teams with national followings are ratings guarantees and having that piece of mind is I'm sure something NBC covets. Looking back at the 24 games covered by the NFLN over the past three seasons there are fewer games that are inter-division (6 out of 24) then the league average as on average 9 out of 24 games are inter-division. Additionally there are very few games that really stand out on their own BEFORE the season started. (Remember, Thursday and Saturday night games are decided and released in April and not subject to "flexing" and knowing what teams are competitive or not). Only 4 out the 24 games shown on the NFL Network in the last three seasons featured two playoff teams from the previous year which is well below the average (somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 out of 24) and this echoes the notion that NFL network is not "cherry-picking" the games. To this end, I feel that the game will be against a middle of the road opponent in terms of national fan base and success from last year. The NFL network knows that they are the only channel in town for these games (Thurs and Sat) and is not willing to anger other broadcast companies to boast ratings which will stand on their own regardless. Do NOT expect the Dolphins, Vikings, Packers or Steelers. The Bengals, Texans, and Ravens all have never played on Thanksgiving and given their moderate fan bases and reasonable success last year I think those are most likely. If I had to predict it, it would be the Texans. I know many Texans fans would be ecstatic to see "their" Texas team play on Thanksgiving and this game may otherwise slump in ratings if played on CBS at 1pm in October. Look for an inter-division opponent for the MNF opening (leaning more away from the Pats and more towards the Dolphins or Bills) and a team with a decent sized fan base for an additional prime-time road game, likely an early season Sunday night before "Flex" starts. Bears is my best guess followed by the Steelers.
Thanks for ur info In the end no matter what network the game is on if the football fan wants to see the game he will find the way to see it thus it becomes a national game vs a 1300 hours regional game on CBS or Fox which he will not be able to access it if he is out of the area unless the network decides to air the game in his area unless he subscribes to DTV. With the advent of DirecTV & sports bars in reality EVERY game is a nation game to a football fan who does not subscribe to DTV but wants to see a specific game so long as he is willing to leave his couch & go to a place that does subscribe to DTV. In my case because I subscribe to DTV I become one of those fans. I will be watching the NYJs on one of my DTV receivers & on the other the Pats or Phins whomever we may be playing at the same time . Remember I am not in the "local" area of either the NYJs or the Pats or the Phins. This year because we play the Texans at home most likely that game will be piped into me here via CBS which may be the only game I see the NYJs on CBS directly As for the fight between TWC & NFLN all that matters to me is TWC allows me to access it without a increase in my cable costs which will then allow me to watch it in whatever room in my house I might be vs now only being able to watch it in the room where I have the DTV receivers
this is great, every year i watch football on Thanksgiving and every year I dont give a shit. Always the a bunch of teams i dont care about going at it, not this year. I'd love to cheer on the jets while eating turkey/ chilling with the family.
I have Verizon so I get the NFLN on my basic HD package. Switched from Cablevison years ago. Love the NFLN, could NOT live without the year round football talk and the shows during during the season is outstanding. THe Sunday pre-game is the best. My predicition is the Dolphins for the MNF, they are our best rivalry and we always have great games and there is MNF history with them. For THanksgiving, its gonna be a team that does not have to travel and its going to be the Ravens, Rex's old team. Makes sense to me. We find out tommorow.
It could be Baltimore, but it won't be because of travel. Look at the past Thanksgiving night games. 2006: Denver at Kansas City 2007: Indianapolis at Atlanta 2008: Arizona at Philadelphia 2009: Giants at Denver
Its not the day games, its the night games. While I prefer to not play that day, and I have 25 people at my house, I don't see why people would not go. Family arrives at noon, we eat at 3pm and I leave around 6pm. And most of us are off the next day. Once in a lifetime deal. The more I think about it, the more I like it as long as we are having a good season. My only concern is our lame fan base not showing up for the game. I could see us being 8-3 and only 60K showing up, once again giving people amo to mock us
I go to the parade every year and I don't eat tll 5PM. Dessert around 7PM Guest leave around 9PM Yup I hate it
2006: Denver 10 at Kansas City 19 2007: Indianapolis 31 at *Atlanta 13 2008: Arizona 20 at Philadelphia 48 2009: Giants 6 at Denver 26 *Atlanta blew chunks that year After looking at that (extremely small) sample size, anybody not in favor of a Houston at Jets Thanksgiving night game?
If they had built a dome I bet it would be packed. Peyton plays in a dome. I was just there. Beautiful Stadium. I don't know what the big deal was......
go ahead make it houston @ jets thanksgiving. that is the least favorite home game this year. well that and the bills game. please make it houston i will not feel bad at all watching it at home and giving up my seats.
