Don might be one and certainly I've heard yankees fans calling wfan in recent months hoping that Mauer would join the yanks.
That doesn't mean the people saying that were Yankee fans or that Yankee fans were upset. In fact, the only guy who posted anything that might have sounded upset is a Sox fan (IATA).
Don't get me wrong, I would love to have Mauer on the Yankees, but I'm not upset over this. I just think it's odd for a player like Mauer to sign with a non-contender when he could easily have signed with a contender for even MORE money.
Don't worry if its anything like Johan, they will sign him to a deal then after a couple of years of the Twins fielding a team better suited to beat up the up and down teams of the AL central, he will ask to be traded and as mentioned before if its anything like the way Johan left Minnesota the yankees will trade a couple of mid level prospects and have an all star catcher
I like how 2 Yankees fans were mildly upset, and 5 Mets fans used it as an excuse to paint all Yankees fans as whiny. I'm glad he resigned with Minny. Would have loved to have him, he's a hell of a player, but Romine and/or Montero will be fine...
He was the one hope to be a true C stud, something the Sox havent had for years and years. Martinez may as well be a 1b, since he's headed there.
If Mauer hit the open market, I think that the Sox would've had the inside track on him anyway. Plus, I'm not entirely convinced that he's gonna hold up behind the plate over the duration of his contract (which is also why I'm concerned about the Yanks catcher of the future, the similarly huge Jesus Montero.) So I'm not too upset that Mauer never hit the open market. In any case, it's nice to see a fan favorite stay with his hometown team. It would've been especially sad to see the Twins let him go, considering that the Pohlads have more money than God.
Don doesn't count. The ones who call WFAN are dilusional, and really this is just a poor example of Yankees fans as a whole. I don't see a Yankees fan in here that was truly upset or really thought we were going to get him. Mauer should be with the Twins. Seeing him anywhere else like seeing Derek Jeter in anything but a Yankees jersey.
<--Yankee fan. Absolutely not surprised that Mauer stayed in Minnesota. He actually got a bigger contract from them than I was expecting. Good for him and good for the Twins. Would he have made millions more if he became a FA? Probably. However, 184 friggin' mill is obviously more than enough for him, his kids, and grandkids to live quite comfortably, on a team he loves, in a city he clearly loves. I have a lot of respect for the kid.
I'm the only one who made any sort of statment about being unhappy he signed with the Twins. I'm a Red Sox fan.
I'm a Yankees fan and I'm thrilled the Twins resigned him. It's good for baseball and good for small market teams like the Twins. I'm curious how upset Red Sox and Mets fans are because they can't sign another superstar. It's like the fat kid in tears because someone ate the last slice of cake.
Mets fans generally believe that Yankees fans cry about everything. Meanwhile, they're paying no attention to the river of tears they lay out on a daily basis. It would be sad if it were so damned hilarious. IATA is a Red Sox fan, genius. Oh, and taking shots at the fans of the defending champs when your team yet again is missing players from its starting lineup is just sad. And hilarious. Pretty much this, though Minny isn't currently a non-contender. 3-4 years from now I fully expect another ARod situation where the Sox and Yankees are are the only two teams in the "We gotta trade this contract we gave Mauer" sweepstakes. They won't be able to hold onto talent or bring in star power while they pay this. I think it's great for the organization in the short-term in terms of fan PR, but I can't see how this is going to make sense in the end for the Twins or Mauer.
Part of it is Minnesota just gave them a new ballpark. Not signing Mauer for monetary reasons would have been the end of all fan support for that franchise. But as has been said, in 3 years when they have AAA kids starting every game on the mound they will regret it.
