Also just cut by the Eagles...listening to the local sports radio today and they feel the guy is a productive player the team should've kept despite his contract. Here's more from Philly.com The Eagles continue to release aging players with expensive contracts. To no surprise, the team announced today that it has cut wide receiver Kevin Curtis and defensive end Darren Howard. Curtis, 31, was due to earn a $1.1 million roster bonus in early June. The 33-year-old Howard was slated to earn a $1 million bonus today. Curtis' 2010 base salary was to be $3.4 million; Howard's $3.5 million. Curtis was signed through 2012. Howard had a contract that expired in 2011. Of course, contracts aren't guaranteed in the NFL. Both players were once highly-touted free agent signings, but in the end were mild disappointments. "Darren Howard has been one of our most productive and versatile members of our defense in the last couple of years,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said. “He is nothing but a solid player, leader and person on and off the field." Howard recorded 6.5 sacks last season and 10 the year before. Curtis was hurt most of last season and for a good part of the 2008 season. "Kevin is one of the classiest players I have ever been around," Reid said. "He's the type of player and person we like to build our team with. We just feel good about the young core of receivers we have on our team at this point." Howard joined the Eagles as an unrestricted free agent in 2006 and played in all 64 regular season games and six postseason contests. During his four-year tenure in Philadelphia, he registered 22.5 sacks among his 122 tackles.
How about taking a look at this piece of shit? Sorry, it's just that every time someone gets cut, at least 3 threads pop up (Surprised i got to this one before two others popped up) -- There should be a cut thread. Then again, people who post shit like this when there is already a topic on it will probably still do it. (Not referring to you GSour)
Just to continue...5.5 sacks per season in 4 years...those numbers are better than some of the stiffs we have now. Guy could get 8 or 9 in this defense.
I'll talk a little more slowly for you. he....doesn't......fit......our ........defensive........scheme.
I know we keep talking about this guy or that guy being a 4-3 defensive end or tackle, but really, the system's are much more fluid than we give the coaches credit for. And especially with a defensive scheme like Rex's where he's sending 5 and 6 guys anyway. Let's remember also that Kris Jenkins was a 4-3 DT and people were concerned that he couldn't make the transition to nose. In today's NFL, guys either make plays or they don't. They're either stout, strong, and productive or they're not. This guy has made plays. Unlike a certain DE/LB wearing #50 who's still a sack virgin. Worth a look, especially from the Eagles where there is quality players coming out of that defense.
He would have to learn to play linebacker at 33. I have my doubts that he could do that. Also, Jenkins was a huge 4-3 DT for Carolina. NTs play in both 4-3 and 3-4 systems. Bad comparison.
career defensive stats. stat monster sack wise, but reading above he works in a 4-3. our defense is, so complicated though. i think the people at http://profootballfocus.com have the Jets, and Ravens listed a 4-3.
That's funny, considering the Jets run a base 3-4. They mixed in some 4 DL sets in early downs last season more after Jenkins got hurt.
I corresponded with them (PFF) a bit at the end of the year about the Jets defensive alignment. Their claim was that their charting showed 4 linemen (hands in the dirt) more than 50% of snaps. They promised to send me more information once their season charting was done but I haven't received anything yet.
