Alston visits with the Jets Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 11, 2010 6:19 PM ET The Jets are hosting former Raiders linebacker Jon Alston Thursday in a visit, according to Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger. Alston, who once played for Rob Ryan in Oakland, could complete the Ryan cycle if he catches on in with the Jets as a special teamer. The Jets are free to sign Alston despite the Final Eight rules because he wasn't tendered a contract by the Raiders as a restricted free agent.
So we can sign any RFA if they weren't tendered and not worry about F8 rules. Not that we'll be finding a gem.
I got this from Wikipedia: Big surprise Al Davis signed him, eh. EDIT: According to http://atl.scout.com/a.z?s=122&p=2&c=506664 that looks accurate.
Alston is a great hybrid Small Forward/Shooting Guard but I'm not sure if he fits in a more symmetric offense like the Jets. And what are we going to have to give the Rockets to get him? Wait, what were you guys talking about?
Re: Alston visits with the Jets LOL. That's funny. I liked Alston in college, but I really haven't noticed him much in the pros. Depth signing, I suppose, but he wouldn't likely offer much more than ST help.
This is purely speculation but perhaps this is a "Westhoff signing" as he typically likes to add a guy or 2 in the draft. For years now it seems we always draft mid to late round guys who can contribute on special teams... but perhaps the guys we are targetting in this draft are more about positional depth(I.E. Linemen) than so special teamers. Perhaps Westhoff sees Alston as a potential replacement for Trusnik and Wright. Again this is just purely speculation.
Seriously... Cato tries to dish it out...after he calls Rafer Skip To My Lue Alston a small forward? Alston's been on 3 teams since he was on the Rockets anyway...
Nets being one of them. Then they bought him out to join the Heat. He was one of the bright spots on that team. Geez, this basketball season can't end soon enough.
