That's not the point - it's whether Jones would do that next year, which of course he wouldn't. I don't know if we'll ever find out, but I find it hard to believe that the Jets didn't offer him a contract similar to the one he just signed. If so, he just didn't want to be #3 back on a team he just ran 1400 yards for. That's his business, but it's still nothing but pride.
There were times during the past two seasons where I'd look at TJ's stats and ask myself "How the hell did he get so many yards? Where are they coming from?" We'll be fine.
TJ is the man, and I hate to see him go. With that said, he should've just signed a cheaper contract with the Jets. I know he is durable, but that will surely be tested for real behind that horrific OL. I can't believe he chose to go down that road. So sad...
Terrible move for the Jets. And with Washington looking elsewhere, it could wind up that Shonn Greene, a second year player that fumbles a lot and was hurt twice already, will be the only Jets' RB with any Jets 'experience.' I hope things work out, but the probability is that this will cause much harm for the Jets. The Jets could have had him for one more year, but Woody wanted to cut costs over competing for a Super Bowl. I hope Woody's proud of himself. He saved some cash. This sickens me.
I'm ok with this if Shonn Greene stays healthy and not ok with it if he doesn't. I guess it's all going to depend on what happens next season. The only reason I bring the duality up is that Shonn Greene is clearly injury prone, which means right now the Jets have a hole at RB that did not exist when Jones was on the team.
You have Washington, who just came off of a major injury, who may walk. You have Greene, who missed games, who was injured twice already, who fumbles the ball a lot possibly from his mini fingers. You lose a guy who just ran for 1400 yards, 14 TDs, took up the slack after Leon went down, is a great role model for the younger players, who works harder than possibly any other NFL player, who is a no b***s*** kinda guy. You put all that together and IMO it has the potential to cause much harm to the Jets. Does that answer your question? Thanks.
You do realize we would have had to find another young running back anyway, right? Even if Jones turns out to be decent in 2010, he'd be a lock to break down in 2011.
Haha, my boy and I came up with the phrase, 'deceptive yards' to describe his running style. He did look spry when I saw him at the Tampa game though. Considering what he got in KC, the whole situation just stinks. He was a veteran that never got hurt and never fumbled. Regardless of his projected totals for next year, we need that on our team right now.
The probability is that TJ would have accounted for half the production he had last year. He fell apart in the postseason. Another year means he falls apart a little sooner. I'd have loved to bring him back at a lower rate in a support role, but he clearly didn't want to do that. We're trying to win a Superbowl. I don't want to kill the possibility of meaningful, young depth at the RB position because we're holding onto Jones too long at too high of a price, only to watch him fall apart and kill is in the playoffs. If he didn't want to return at the rate the Chiefs gave him, he's better off gone.
It was clear at the end of the season and in the playoffs that Jones was a step slow and is on the decline. And running backs over 30 decline in a heartbeat. Look at Martin and LT and Alexander. Jones is done and you don't pay an old back up RB with no tread left on the tires $6million, cap or no cap. RBs are easy to replace. Greene became the Jets starting RB at the end of last season. Period. The sky was falling when Lamont Jordan left the Jets years ago. How did that turn out for Jordan? The Jets OL can make any back good and Greene is just stronger and faster and younger than Jones. Fargus or some other journeyman will make a fine back up for Greene. It's no great loss IMO.
Jones was a good soldier in his time here, but it's hard to bicker with this move. I thought the Pats would make some kind move on TJ, so I'm happy he went to the Chiefs. History shows a guy like Jones is on his last legs, so good luck to him. For those of you that want Justin Fargas, are you fucking nuts??? I'd rather take my chances with Chauncey....
yea true, jones wont be great for the cheifs cause their line sucks but thats the problem our line doesnt and jones could of has one more good year with us i belive we definetly let him go way to easily unless we sign a proven verteran to take snaps i will be very dissapointed we dont want to burn out green so early and if leon leaves i have a really bad feelign in my stomach...
Lucky for Thomas Jones that Herman Edwards isn't still there to kill him. Now he gets to join Kerry Rhodes and Chad Pennington in my PC Richards bobble-head graveyard.
My Leon Washington bobblehead may be joining my dad's Brent Farve bobblehead in the basement... Hopefully I'll win another next year.
All GM's are operating as if there is still a cap in place, despite the FA restrctions. TJ wasn't worth 6 million to us, and could have signed with the Jets for the same salary that he went to KC for, but he obviously wouldn't swallow his pride for the Jets to do it. Aside from the fact that he's 32, and coming off a year where he had nearly 400 (including the post season) carries. He's got alot of mileage, and he's going to start breaking down. Youth is better. Also, Leon isn't "Looking" else where, just because he was given a second round tender. You also act like the Jets wouldn't be able to match the contract given to Leon, Or Won't match it. And quit blaming Woody, Tannenbaum is making the decisions, Woody just signs the checks.
