Well it caught me on the hop. I thought he was the same old Woody but apparentley not. He sounds like hes getting desperate for success , welcome to the club Woody.

Johnson waxes forceful in new hands-on role

The Jets have a new owner. His name is Woody Johnson. Maybe you've heard of him.
Yes, of course, Johnson has owned the team for six seasons, but he's not the same low-profile guy who always seemed content in the back of the room. (Forget about Waldo; it used to be, "Where's Woody?") In recent months, he has emerged from his cocoon, becoming a player in league affairs and more of a presence in the day-to-day operation of the Jets.

First, Johnson got his own house in order, replacing his stale coach-general manager tandem (Herm Edwards and Terry Bradway) with a couple of up-and-comers, Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini.

From there, Johnson became one of the 11th-hour heroes of the NFL's labor negotiations, developing a revenue-sharing plan with Patriots president Jonathan Kraft that saved the league from financial chaos.

Then came the feather in the cap, proof that his influence in the NFL is growing: Johnson was named by Paul Tagliabue to the eight-member commissioner search committee.

Johnson, who has suffered a few foot-in-mouth episodes in front of microphones and notepads, also is making a concerted effort to improve his relationship with the media.

Those close to Johnson say he's more relaxed, more vocal and more assertive than in the past. And he agreed, saying the change was born from comfort and circumstance, especially with regard to his role in the league.

"Quite frankly, I do (feel more confident)," Johnson told the Daily News. "Perhaps the most important thing we're doing in the NFL, long term, is finding a successor to Paul Tagliabue. If there's a time to get involved in the process, it's now."

Johnson downplayed his increased involvement with the team, but it's obvious that he's more of a factor. He attended the scouting combine in February, sitting through every player interview, and he went to Vanderbilt last month to watch Jay Cutler's private workout for Jets' coaches.

Was the owner looking over the shoulder of his inexperienced decision makers? Johnson, recognizing the importance of having the fourth overall pick, said he simply wanted to investigate every candidate. After all, he'll be doling out about $15 million in guaranteed money to that player, D'Brickashaw Ferguson.

Johnson said he has full confidence in Tannenbaum and Mangini. Indeed, he seems re-energized by having a couple of young go-getters running the show. It took some guts to hire a couple of unproven types; if it works, maybe it'll be the start of a trend.

Maybe there's another reason. Maybe it's because these are his guys. When Johnson hired Bradway, who hired Edwards, the specter of Bill Parcells still hovered over the franchise. This time, Johnson made the unilateral calls on Tannenbaum and Mangini.

"I didn't have trepidations with either decision," Johnson said. "I never really thought of age. I never did. I was looking for people I had confidence in.

"I had a lot of confidence in Mike. I've talked to Mike every day for the last six years, so I know the way he thinks probably better than anybody," he continued. "We did a pretty good amount of research on Eric. He's smart, disciplined, hard working. I liked everything about him. It was either this year or next year that he was going to get a (head-coaching) job."

Johnson raved about the Jets' draft, he talked about the "new culture" surrounding the team and he said, "I just can't wait until our first win."

The sting of a 4-12 season seems to have faded.

Actually, forgetting hiring Terry Bradway on Parcells recommendation, his first management hire, all by myself, was Jay Cross...

He has yet to make his first management fire.

The funniest/strangest part is that Woody has become quite close and friendly with the Krafts.
