    Let's talk safeties.

    Best safety available at 29?

Would you be willing to trade up for Eric Berry? Earl Thomas? How far would you trade up?

    What about some mid-round sleepers?

I haven't looked a whole lot at safeties until now, and I figure this is absolutely worth discussing.

It really depends on what the Jets are looking for. If they want a legitimate, center field roaming type free safety there are a small handful of guys, but if they're looking to add a do it all type then they can have their pick. NFL teams are kind of blurring that distinction between safeties, and the colleges have really ran with it.

Best at #29, I'd guess that one of the three of Berry, Thomas, and Mays is there, just because this first round is so talented that it's hard to imagine safeties at a premium. Beyond that no one would be worth it, and to be honest I'm not sure I'd really be on board with going safety in Rd 1 anyway. If there was ever a position that long term starters can be found later it's safety, but it really just comes down to finding guys that fit.

If Morgan Burnett or Nate Allen is there in Rd 2 for them, I think they'd consider it. Burnett is the best true Free Safety after Berry/Thomas, a real ball-hawk safety. Allen is more well rounded though, and I think would be the fundamental type guy that Rex would love.

Major Wright is getting a lot of heat lately after his 40, but he doesn't play very smart. On the other hand, TJ Ward from Oregon and Kansas' Darrell Stuckey are both smart safeties that could contribute right away. Larry Asante from Nebraska is another guy I really like if they're looking for a Strong Safety type.

And for deep sleepers, Robert Johnson from Utah. Tall and athletic, his only knocks are being a little lanky to hold up to NFL backs and tight ends. If he can bulk up without losing any speed he could be really good.

Wow...great response to the OP. I know nothing about college players, but you've provided a lot to consider/look into. Thanks!

gh,if we don't go safety in rds1-2 don't you think major wright would be good value in the 4th if he's there?

I'm just not a fan of his. He'd be good value based on where a lot of people seem to rank him, it's just that if it were up solely to me I probably would go in a different direction. If he, Stuckey, and Kurt Coleman were on the board, for example, I'd probably go with one of the latter two, even though they aren't physically as talented as Major. That said, I could just as easily see a team take him the 3rd because he worked out well and is explosive when he gets to the ball, so I'm sure his good points will really pop out on tape.

Right now, he's my favorite aside from Rolle. He was an amazing cog in the Blackshirts' defense this past season.

If we don't move up for Mays/Thomas, Morgan Burnett would be an awesome pick in the 2nd.

Like GH said, he is a ballhawking, rangy safety who fits our defense well.

I go on a few different football MB's and the hate here for Mays is so much higher than the others, it's pretty hilarious.

The guy is gonna be a top-15 pick for a reason. I can't wait to come back and bump some of these threads when he's a stud.

I highly doubt that. More like, more guys who read the garbage the media is spewing instead of actually watching the games and/or understanding the system that he came from.

Mays is a good safety with a ton of potential. He would be a great pick.

Dude, you have 8 fucking posts. Don't come in here and act like you know more than everyone else. Taylor Mays' biggest weakness is in pass coverage. That's well known fact. So if you're going to come in here and attempt to pass him off as some sort of football god, then prepare to get e-raped.

I don't give a damn if you don't agree with me on Taylor Mays. Mike Mayock, who's one of the most credible draft sources in the world, broke down tons of film on Mays during this year's combine and explained that this kid just struggles in coverage.

I'm not saying he can't improve and can't be coached up, but he relies on his athleticism way too much. The guy doesn't have any football instincts whatsoever.

Eric Berry and Earl Thomas are much, much better all-around safety prospects. Hell, I'd even take Chad Jones and Nate Allen over Taylor Mays.

This doesn't make any sense. Does having 8 post(now 9) prevent me from reading other people's post?

    That's a well known myth.

Is your natural response in an argument to bash people? Bash me all you want. I've read your post about Mays, and I think you're dead wrong.

So you are getting your info from Mike Mayock? I suppose if I were to weed through hours of film on Ed Reed, I could pick out 3-4 plays where he misread a play and try to label him as a poor safety based on those plays. If an untrained viewer were to see something like that, they would probably think Reed was a poor safety, alas, here we are.

And this is where I call BS. There is really nothing else I can say about that. BS.

No, I'm not getting my information from Mike Mayock. I was just giving you a credible source that isn't a member of TGG. Mayock's a draft scout that I respect a lot. I don't agree with him on everything, but he's right way more than he's wrong.

Go ahead and search through film of Ed Reed. If you feel like doing that, then it's fine by me. I don't give a flying fuck if he was out of position multiple times a game (he wasn't), Ed Reed is a ball hawk...something that Taylor Mays will never, ever be. Ed Reed gets his hands on the football and scores.

Hahaha...oh man. I just got to the "untrained viewer" part of this shitty post.

In you're mind, and your mind only, it's a myth.

    Yes, it is.

...and this is where I tell you to leave. Please, exit the draft forum in a quiet fashion. It's for your own good.

P.S. - Taylor Mays is incredibly overrated

Ed Reed was only an example. But you're kidding yourself if you think he's never out of position. The point is that I can pick out 3-4 plays from anyone's game film and attempt to use that to support my argument, no matter how incredibly flawed it may be. Troy Polamalu made a bad play? Let me add that to my "Troy P is a bad safety" collection, composed entirely of less than 1% of the total plays he is in for.

I am glad you find it funny.

That's bad form. Are you now a bad poster without a proper argument bone in his body?

Someone calls you out for your BS, and your response is telling them to leave? Hilarious.

    It wasn't bullshit.

I'm not going to repeat myself. I already gave you plenty of reasons why Taylor Mays isn't a good football player. He's a workout warrior that is incredibly overrated.

...and please, stop comparing Taylor Mays to Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed. You should be publicly executed for making such statements.

Your argument is just flat out stupid. Saying that even the best safeties in the league make a few mistakes in a season has nothing to do with Taylor Mays being a terrible cover safety all of the time.

If the Jets are looking for a safety at #29, it's not a good position.

After Berry and Thomas (not bringing Mays into the equation), there is a significant drop.

Nate Allen, Chad Jones & Morgan Burnett are slight reaches and most of them could be available in early/mid round 2.

I'm not thrilled with alot of options that might be available at #29.......only Iupati, Mathews & maybe Kyle Wilson.....I believe all 3 will be gone.

Trading back into early/mid rd 2, draft Nate Allen, and get a 3rd round pick would give us our 7 picks .

The key to trading back, is waiting till we're OTC...to see who's available at #29.

All you keep saying is that he is overrated, bad in coverage and has no football instincts without backing any of it up. Do you understand why you can't back it up? I have a theory.

Was I comparing Mays to Ed Reed or Troy Polamalu? You must have on your black and white goggles. Even if I were comparing them, it would be no different than comparing Eric Berry with Ed Reed or saying that he's the next Ed Reed, and that seems to be what everyone is doing.

I'm pretty sure it has everything to do with your source being Mike Mayock breaking down a few plays of Mays' career and you using that to say he's a bad safety. If you want to say that he's terrible in coverage, takes bad angles and has no football instincts, then have something to back that up. You're just making shallow statements.

The "all of the time" is yet another contrived statement. That just isn't true.

Mason.....go back and review film on Mays.

    Mays is terrible in coverage.

With May's athletic ability he should be a top 5 player, but it doesn't translate to the football field.

There is a reason May's stock has dropped....no big play making ability and poor coverage .

What's your theory? That I'm right?

Taylor Mays over pursues many times a game and takes poor angles in coverage.

You're asking me to break down every single play of the guy's season and that's impossible. ...if I posted a video of him playing horrible coverage, you'd say something like: "Well, that's only one play. Ed Reed makes mistakes too!"
