It was just done by hand as I was watching the games. I am sure you can also do it by getting some tapes from his 1st 2 years in the 4-3. Maybe the Elias sports bureau also keep such stats. I made a chart of a loss/no gain then 1 to 10yds or over gain on a piece of accounting paper & just fill in the blank in the proper column when JV was the tackler. It was really quite easy to keep track of
Okay, my interest is piqued so I'll post some data from his record setting year last year in the base 4-3. This is by no means without flaws as it is based on whatever the play by play person recorded on nfl.com. As you'll see, some games his official stats don't jive with the play by play. Anyway, the first column is the game, the second is his official stats for that game, followed by the yardage gained on each of his tackles (the bolded numbers showed it was a tackle recorded with an assist). Team : Tackles/Assists : Yardage Gained Chiefs : 7/1 : 5, 4, 8, 3, 4, 11, 0, 23, 2, -2 Miami : 7/4 : 2, -2, 5, 9, 7, 4, 6, 4, 15, 7, 6 Jaguars : 10/3 : 5, 2, 1, 5, 7, 1, 3, -1, -4, 8, 3, -2, 0 Ravens : 11/5 : 4, 0, 4, 4, 2, 4, -4, 6, 4, 6, 2, 0, 11, 1, 3, 2 Bucs : 11/3 : 4, 4, 3, 6, 10, 2, 2, 8, 7, 7, 1, 6, 8, 26 Bills : 8/4 : 3, 5, 4, 0, 8, 3, 3, 4, 6, 7, 6, 6, 1, 1 Falcons : 7/0 : NO DATA Chargers : 8/3 : 3, 4, 4, 4, 2, 2, 13, 4, 4, 1, 1, 7 Panthers : 4/2 : 2, 2, 7, 4, 3, 0 Broncos : 11/2 : 9, 5, 2, 4, 2, 4, 6, 2, 6, 8, 3, 0, 15, 1 Saints : 5/3 : 4, 4, 4, 6, 11, 6, 6, 4 Patriots : 7/4 : 3, 13, -2, 5, 6, 10, 6, 6, 3, 3 Raiders : 5/4 : 2, 0, 2, 2, 2, 10, 19, 8, 8, 10 Miami : 4/2 : 3, 3, 6, 2, 1, 4, 1 Patriots : 13/4 : 3, 5, 1, 9, 2, 2, 8, 6, 3, 7, 2, 13, 5, -4, 5, -1, 2 Bills : 6/1 : 1, 8, 7, 1, 1, 4, 1 Stats can be manipulated many ways and never tell the whole story but in this unofficial count of his 169 total tackles and assists last year, only 17 gained 0 or less yards and of those 17 8 had assists. In addition, 66 of his tackles/assists took place after 5 or more yards were gained.....
these are good stats and all, but you would have to do this with all other mlb's in the 4-3 in this league in order to accurately compare him to other mlb's in the league
Im starting to have man love for jaywayne....I agree 1000% with this post...Ive been saying the same exact thing for 2 months...I also agree with jay politically....I htink Im fallin for ya big guy:breakdance:
 Ok johnny..take it easy big fella...lol. I guess I should say thanks for the compliment? Lets keep the man love in check..deal? haha.
I have no doubts that Rex would've figured out a way to get the most out of Vilma's talents but he is a perfect fit for that Saints' D and had an excellent playoff run.
Personally, I'm glad he got his ring, and played well for it. He really got the short end of the stick here, and kept his mouth shut...
I still agree with the op...vilma isn't a star linebacker....but he is a very good linebacker and a superbowl champion....kudos to vilma!
Jaywayne is 100% correct. Vilma is overrated by Jet fans. He is an ok/good MLB, nothing more. Congrats on him winning. Thank god he is in a scheme where he can at least play and succeed somewhat. He would be useless here.
I dont know what criteria you use to be a star linebacker, but he was named to the Pro-bowl this year, and went to the pro-bowl as a Jet. two teams, two pro-bowl appearances. Not to mention what a decent human being he is, and how hard he worked to come back from micro-surgery. HE is a good role model for kids who look up to football players. And he is a star.
You mean the same Larry Coker who never got a coaching job again after his theft of money from The U for impersonating a head coach? He wouldnt know his ass from his elbow about who to draft. He lucked into the job after Butch Davis upped and left. Were it not for Ed Reed, the de facto coach of the 2001Canes, and a brilliant season by QB Ken Dorsey, they probably would not have won the NC that year.
