so a Colts/Vikings matchup would net 4 million more viewers then Jets/Saints? I agree the more attractive matchup from a football fans stand point if Manning vs Favre but if you have any decent interest in football you watch the super bowl! I can't imagine a good football fan saying "Ehh the Jets in the super bowl? Who do they have? I'm not watchin it!" If your not a big fan what would be the difference if Peyton Manning was in the game or not? What do you know about any of the teams? I really don't care. Before the Chargers game there was this article saying any matchup involving the Jets would be a terrible Super Bowl. People hate us. America isn't rooting for us. Just look at the ESPN polls. We are dead last in teams people are rooting for. Not WINNING but rooting. No one is rooting for us.
I've had enough Favre for a lifetime. I'll watch either way but I'd prefer to see a Saints Colts match up.
the thing about the super bowl is even non sports fans tune in to watch. I can't see how any of these games would not be huge. Manning, Farve, the post Katrina first appearance Saints, o the underdog Jet with the rookie QB and best news worthy coach in years. All of these teams will draw a huge crowd.

The problem with that is that its largely the media that decides which players become household names. Thomas Jones, for example, has done about as much as anybody the last four or five years at the halfback spot, gets plenty of respect in league circles, but is the furthest thing from a household name. Sure he's humble, but it's not like he avoids the spotlight at all. If the networks wanted to push a Jets superstar, they certainly could do that. They just prefer to talk up guys like Terrell Owens (no matter how far over the hill), Tony Romo (no matter how consistently mediocre), Eli Manning (same as Romo), and Brett Favre (no matter how sick of him everybody who owns a television set gets). Some, like Peyton and Favre, deserve the attention for everything they've accomplished, but there are plenty of others whos superstar status has nothing to do with the game of football. If you think I'm exaggerating, see Chris Hovan, and remember how he was one of the league's biggest defensive superstars for years despite not being very good (his unhealthy obsession with Favre was an unresistable draw for a media that shares his sickness). It feels like it's gotten a lot worse over the course of the last decade. You wonder if Curtis Martin, who hardly was treated as NFL royalty, would even be known if he were playing today. If your not a quarterback and don't have some tabloid material in your personal life, it's tough to get noticed. You can't give CBS a free pass for wanting to capitalize on Peyton's image, because it's them, and their fellow networks, who built up that image while simultaneously deciding that the Jets were unworthy of promotion. Moreso than any other sport, this game is about a team of 52 players, not individual superstars. Choosing to cover it as a league of a handful of superstars is exactly that, a choice.

All true and good points. There's no doubt that the Superbowl gets views regardless of the teams. Hell, some people watch just for the commercials. However, there is no denying that the ratings are higher with better known players/teams. The cowboys and steelers will _always_ have high rated superbowls just because of the team logo, so of course the network wants them to play. That's the only point I was trying to make with the Yankees comparison - the higher profile teams get more views. Why should a guy in Louisiana give two craps about the Jets? They might care about the Steelers though because more often than not they have good talent and a winning tradition. The Jets usually have the former, but haven't had the later. CBS can push the Jets all they want if they so desired, but if the ad revenue is higher when they push the Steelers, their choice is made for them. To them it's all ratings and numbers, they could care less about who the team actually is. It's all about $$, not a vendetta against other teams. The teams/players that get pushed have a bandwagon, which makes them marketable. The Jets simply don't have that yet. Also, Sanchez has been on the cover of major magazines twice already this year as a rookie. If he has more success, you'll see him in commercials and on SNL. He'll have his day in the sun, if he plays are well as we know he can.
OK, so if people who don't live "near the Hudson" don't know about the Jets... how do they know about Manning or Favre? Manning or Favre are not going to pull any viewers who don't know about the Jets... and Namath. Now, the ratings in Indy might not be so good....LOL.
Vegas wants us to win though.... they've been saying it all week. If the Jets win it may set a record handle here in Vegas. They are thinking of 100 million... consider that only 2% of SB wagers are placed in Vegas and it's a win for all the sportsbooks if we win.
IF THE JETS WIN...The entire country outside of the Tri-State Area and Vegas will go into a depression. All the money going on the Colts is absurd. LETS EMPTY OUT SOME WALLETS JETS FANS!
Uhhh, I think the network would be licking its chops to see Favre against his "old" team, frankly, because of the whole December collapse shit. Seriously, the stories would write themselves, and Favre would have to sit there squirming the whole week, answering questions I'm sure he's not looking forward to. At this point, any matchup is going to be a good one. Especially Jets vs. Saints. I can hear the post game speech already (albeit a 6:30 start): One home team wins and the FUCKIN JETS!!
