By Rich Cimini DE Shaun Ellis, speaking on a conference call with reporters, said he will have surgery next week to insert screws in his broken left hand. He would've done it this week, except it will take more than a week for the skin to heal properly. If the Jets make the Super Bowl, Ellis should be able to play because of the two-week break. Ellis said there's no doubt he will play Sunday against the Colts in the AFC Championship Game. He hurt his hand on the first play of Sunday's win over the Chargers, saying his hand "just gave out" while engaging with an offensive lineman. He went to the locker room to get it casted, giving him the "club" look. He was limited through the rest of the game. It obviously affected him. There was one play in which he let QB Philip Rivers get away from a would-be sack because he couldn't grab him. This could be a factor against the Colts, especially in the running game. You probably will see more of Mike DeVito. http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2010/01/win-or-lose-ellis-will-have-su.html#ixzz0dCX0wEbM I particularly dont like Rich Cimini but this does worry me about his effectiveness if we advance to the Superbowl hmy:
He should have had it done ASAP, he could still wrap it up in a cast after the surgery. I have a few screws in my fourth metacarpal and the surgery does not take that long, a few stitches and cast it up. At least the bone will be in place. It's going to have an effect on him though, no doubt.
If he gets surgery on it before the indy game he wouldn't be able to play because his skin would not have enough time to scar and heal. doesn't matter what type of cast he's wearing it wouldn't be able to protect stitches with all the contact he's going to get.
