(KRQE) - New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who has his team in the NFL final four, coached right here in New Mexico more than two decades ago. In 1989, Ryan was the defensive coordinator for New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, New Mexico. New Mexico Highlands is a NCAA Division Two school, a far cry from the bright lights of the NFL. Ryan later worked under his dad, Buddy, as an assistant coach with the Arizona Cardinals. Ryan reminisced about his days with Highlands in a 1995 interview with KRQE News 13. "We kid each other, this is a little different than New Mexico Highlands," Ryan said. "You know, it's like every time we walked out there in the stadium, man I'd remember maybe we'd have a thousand people in the crowd. But yeah, it's a big difference. You know, it's funny. There's the old saying, it's not how you start the race, it's how you finish." The Jets and Ryan, far removed from his humble beginnings at New Mexico Highlands, will take on Indianapolis in the AFC Championship Game Sunday in Indianapolis. Okay, I just love the photo. Rex is the man!!!!!!
This is obviously a few thousand buffets ago. I love Rex, and I hope he takes better care of himself someday soon.
