Ok...I want a separate thread for this discussion... I've been reading in a number of threads about the issues with Ellis' hand in a cast (see him miss that sack because he couldn't grab). I don't care if they do customize the cast...a broken hand is a broken hand and it will hurt like hell if he tries to grab to bring someone down. Why can't we stick VG with his hand in the dirt and just rush the passer? That guy NEEDS to earn some of that massive contract! Slap his ass...tell him he ONLY has to get to Manning and that is his singular focus for the whole game. Ignore Addai and the rest (unless he's in his way)...go smack Manning around!!! What is so damn difficult about it? As many posters have said, it's going to take one or two guys who don't normally contribute much to step up and have a medium to monster game to get this one in the books with a W. Thoughts?? Comments?? Can someone drive to Jersey and have a private meeting with Gholston and tell him to shake his head from his ass for just 2 measly weeks?? Peace! The Mezz
One game from the SB and you want to replace Ellis with Gholston in passing situations? I hate this idea.
1. His pass rushing moves are very basic and haven't worked in the NFL. 2. A lot of players in the NFL after getting huge signing bonuses just don't really care about work that much. Many times busts in the NFL just haven't busted their asses hard enough to be great.
Actually...just the opposite...I want to see him on 2nd downs... Here is my thinking...basically, use VG as STRICTLY what we call a run blitzer. Kills two birds with one stone. Set him to the weak side. If it's a run play...he has the weak side on the way to the QB. If it's a pass...well there you go. He may be a Turd...but he's fresher...healthy...and he has GOT to be realizing at some point he's playing for a position on this team. His signing bonus wasn't so great that it can't be eaten up in the 3rd year of his contract. 2nd down run blitzer is all I'm asking for.
I'm just trying to think outside the box here to see what we can do to add an additional element for the Colts to have to contend and think about. I don't know...spit balling ideas here.
Ellis has always been a guy who brings it in the playoffs. I don't want to see Gholston unless it's a blowout. I don't think he should be on the roster. Much rather see Westerman.
At this point - in the post season - they could put Ellis on the field in a body cast and it would make me feel better than seeing Gholston on the field.
Ok...now I feel like an idiot...screw the Gholston Idea...I completely FORGOT about Westerman!!!! Ok...it's confirmed. I'm getting old...ok, Switch names...Westerman in EXACTLY the same scenario described as above. Reminder...2nd down only....
It's been said that we are weak at the DL spot. All you Gholston haters had better realize now, that if one of these guys go down, at least at DE, you will see more of Gholston. We had all better pray that he knows it's time to step up. He may be beyond the point of salvation, but everyone in the NFL wants that ring.
Ellis played a great game after breaking his hand on the first play of the SD game. VG has shown us absolutely NOTHING this season to prove that he is worthy of getting any PT in a huge game like this. Interesting idea, but I don't think there's any chance of it happening. It comes down to this: Ellis w/ one hand >>>>>>>>> Gholston.
How is sending any pass rusher (whether it be Gholston or Westermann) solely on second down going to confuse Peyton Manning? I'm pretty sure Jamarcus Russell could even figure out what was coming after a few series.
Ellis (with broken arm) > Ghost Ellis (with two broken arms) > Ghost Ellis ( with broken leg and two broken arms) > Ghost Ellis (with head choped off) = Ghost I think you can see where I am going with this. We are better off with Devito pouha and Ellis (with broken arm) in a rotation than we would be with Ghost.
As WB says Westermann, who has shown a pulse this year, is a better replacement for Ellis than Gholston if it comes to that. I think Ellis will play though and probably play very well. He's been waiting a long time for this game and I'm betting that you'd have to drag him off the field with a tractor.
I know this is getting ahead of ourselves here, but has anybody thought of Gholston getting a ring should we win the Big game? If it happens, I say the organization takes it from him and sticks it in the trophy case for the fans. You know, right next to the week2 Patriots game ball. (Wishing I had a Gholston sucks smiley right about now...)
It's not about knowing it's coming...it's about causing disruption. You cause him (or the team) to focus on it which takes away from other areas. Works almost like a spy. And you mix it up on downs...but still primarily 2nd. The only reason I bring it up is it was a strategy employed by Monte Kiffin a few times and worked very well...I only bring up using "Ghost" or "Westerman" is because of the freshness/speed factor. Like I said...just an idea.
