Marvin Lewis wins AP coach of the year award I think that the only problem I have is that Rex couldn't get even one stnking pity vote? Really?
im sure he will get his share of the votes in the future. like when we are the number 1 seed next year :breakdance:
Anyone who gets the Bengals into the playoffs is pretty much a lock for CotY. Not surprised Rex didn't get any consideration, this was voted on by the same folks who feel the Jets are undeserving on their current position to begin with.
We did only go 9-7 and regardless of what we think it did take a tremendous amount of luck for us to get into the playoffs
^This is true, but I think any rookie coach/rookie QB combo that wins a playoff game should get at least a single sniff.
As always, playoff performance has nothing to do with these awards - they're voted on before the playoffs start. The Jets were 9-7 last year, they're 9-7 this year, and Ryan is a bigmouth that a lot of the media types seem to resent. It was 100% predictable that he wouldn't get any votes. Personally, I certainly would have voted for either Lewis or Turner over him.
I've seen quite a few from the media say how great he is for their profession. It is fans that don't like Ryan. Fans of other teams and timid Jets fans. It just so happens that the media and fans overlaps. There are quite a few partisan reporters in the media. Those will hate Rex.
I'm not big on Lewis but why would Ryan get a vote? The Jets went 9-7 and sort of backed into the playoffs. If you counted playoffs, then he might be considered, especially if they upset the Chargers. Next year, if this team continues to get better, and I suspect it definitely will, and he goes 11-5 or 12-4 he'll get his due.
I don't think it has anything to do with partisanship at all. Ryan being good for the media and members of the media liking Ryan are two very different things. Ryan is good for the media because unlike most coaches he says things that make news, but even more because those things can be attacked and made fun of, and that is what sports journalism is all about nowadays. I think some media people don't like him because they think him opening his mouth shows a lack of class. I think other media people don't like him because they wish they had the guts to do what he does; since they don't, they want him to fail so that they can feel better about themselves. It's a thin line between self-confidence and arrogance, and I think some people in the media think Ryan is on the wrong side of that line. I think it has very little to do with being a fan of another team.
I think you're both right...with a little bit of anti-Jets sentiment sprinkled in. We have been a media punching bag for years (see also: Bungles). It will be a little while before that 40 years worth of habit is changed. Rex appears to be just the man to do it. And I won't leave out that I believe Mangini's fingerprints are on this team. While Parcells was supposed to be the guy that erased SOJ from the organization's minds, his tenure ended in what could only be a SOJ moment...a head coach for a day?!! Well, Mangini is the one who came in preaching a new attitude. He implemented it, but Rex seems to have perfected it.
I think you're agreeing with me. Those reporters that want to be like Ryan are the timid ones I mention. Then again I'm a homer Jet fan who loves Sexy Rexy.
You had used the word partisan and said that fans and media overlap, so I assumed you were saying that the people who attack Ryan are doing so because they don't like the Jets. I might agree with brothermoose that there's a bit of a reaction that if it's the Jets it must be bad, but I think that that is a minor component. Revis, for example, has certainly not suffered from the fact that he's a Jet in terms of how he's perceived in the media.
I could only think of one name; Why does a rookie HC who has a team 14-0 and then rests his starters for the playoffs NOT win this award ?
Come on, as much as I love Rex at the moment, I can not honestly say he deserves this award. He is not even in the top 5 for the award. The Jets gave away 4 very winnable games this year. It took Rex half a season to get the idea he is Head Coach and not the defacto defensive coordinator. It took him over half a season to scale back Sanchez/Schotty and to stop the wildly undisciplined penalties. That being said............... Ryan has improved significantly this season. He has the ability to honestly/judiciously self assess and improve the areas he isn't performing well in and to change things that are not working. Those are things that the last two Jet coaches were either not smart enough to do or too egomaniacal. This ability may allow Rex to become an upper echelon coach in this league. If you eliminate the first half of the season then Rex is certainly a top 5 coach. Honestly, if he continues on improving there really is no limit to how good he can be. However, taking the season in total he shouldn't be considered for the award. .... my .02
