Not exactly shocking http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/baseball/mlb/01/11/mcgwire.steroids.ap/index.html?eref=sircrc
Of course not a surprise, but hopefully this puts any notion of the Hall of Fame for this guy to bed. He would never have had a career even remotely noteworthy without them, as he (finally) now freely admits.
I'm glad that he came out, even if everyone was 90% positive that he took steroids. It's the right thing to do.
I dunno about that, he was a pretty decent hitter before the roids, not 73 HR type hitter, but still solid. As for him admitting it, man anyone who saw his scrawny ass on his 1985 rookie card knew he was totally juicing. Talk about being disingenuous.
Its a shame, but not a surprise. I wanted to believe 11 years ago that he was just on the right supplements and working out really hard because I'm a big Cardinals fan and he was making baseball exciting again. However, it was too good to be true. Steroids or not, it sure was fun watching him make baseballs look like golf balls flying out of the park.
He finally admitted what everyone already knew? Great. I still don't want him anywhere near the hall.
I was a fan of Mcgwire and i'm disappointed. I feel bad for his son that was with him at a lot of the games in 98,and i feel for the Maris family that was there respectfully to watch him break their dads record.
So now Bonds is the only one left that everybody KNOWS did steroids and still refuses to admit it. That's ok though because he will get a few years in jail for it.
Don't know if I'd go that far. If you believe what he said, he hit 49 hrs in '87, 32 in '88, both of which were before he said he started using (again, if you believe what he says). The point is I don't think anyone knows what he could have done without them. I think its wrong to say that he could or couldn't make the HOF without steroids, because we'll never know. I doubt he'll ever make the HOF anyway. I think this sealed the deal. He mentioned something about immunity as why he waited 5 years to admit it. I'd love to hear more about that.
If steroids are the reason that you don't want McGwire to be in the hall, then you can't elect anyone from the steroid era. There wasn't testing then, and the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming that huge numbers of players were juicing. Why should Big Mac be singled out? The media has, as always, been absolutely shameful in their coverage of this steroid story by the way. Here's Joel Sherman in October: Here's Joel Sherman today: And people wonder why these guys don't just come clean. The very same sportswriters who are urging them to tell the whole truth will not hesitate to bury them when they get the opportunity. It's funny how nobody questions why these guys who had more access than anyone to the players and the clubhouses didn't manage to catch onto this story until years and years after the fact.
