One of the more interesting decisions coming up is Mike Holmgren's choice on whether or not to keep Eric Mangini as his head coach. I thought I'd post a poll for fun to see where people stood and why. I believe that Holmgren will part ways with Mangini for 3 reasons: 1. Holmgren wants his own guy in there running things at the start of his career as a Czar. Having your own guy means no competing agendas in the building and no shouting matches in the media if you need to make a change. 2. Holmgren has always been a 4-3 guy. He likes to put pressure on the opposing QB and he has never had a team with a 3-4 defense. Mangini's main claim to fame, such as it is, is that he was involved with Belichik's very successful 3-4 for several years, that won't cut any weight with Holmgren. 3. Mangini has shown no ability to work with, let alone develop QB's in his now considerable experience as an NFL head coach. Both veteran QB's that he coached had some success followed ultimately by failure. The young QB's he has coached have never been able to establish themselves. He fails at the most important job an NFL head coach has - to put a good QB on the field at the game's most important position. I believe these factors clearly point to Mangini getting fired tomorrow despite the 4 game win streak at the end of the year. I think they also point to the Browns having a looooooong season next year as they rebuild from scratch on both sides of the ball.
I agree with the OP's theories....I think Holmgren blows it up and starts fresh....a la Bill Parcells.
I hear all kinds of theories lately as to why Holmgren will keep Mangini for a 1 year trial. I just don't see it. I think Eric is peddling his papers next Monday at the latest.
There are only 5 working hours left and no news conference scheduled. He doesn't get fired today. Do you plan on posting one of these each day until he does get fired?
Other: Holmgren forces Mangini to grow moustache and wear glasses, beginning process in which he attempts to control both bodies with his one mind, eventually moving full-time into Mangini's when his own becomes too old and weak.
Holmgren will meet the press at 4pm. He's meeting Mangini earlier in the afternoon. http://www.nesn.com/2010/01/mike-holmgren-expected-to-meet-with-eric-mangini.html
I think he goes, but I don't think it's particularly fair. That 10-6 season was a total mirage. The Browns have been horrible since the franchise re-booted. Somebody had to come in and tear down the wallpaper; Mangini did it. The fact that he won out is beyond impressive. And for the record, while I don't think it is fair, I do think it's in the best interests of the franchise. Mangini knows how to build a football team; he just doesn't know how to coach one. If Al Davis ever suffers from a bout of sanity, he would do well to install Mangini as his football czar and let him clean house.
Are you serious? 4 straight wins to end the season vs. Pittsburgh, Oakland, Kansas City and Jacksonville? 0 quality wins there. Especially with the way Pittsburgh was playing at the time. Mangini HAS to be canned.
I am hoping Mangini gets a bit more time to show what he can do. The Browns had a nice turn around toward the end of the year, and if Holmgren sits down and talks to Mangini I am sure they can come to some kind of agreements on how future strategy will unfold. It will be in Mangini's best interest to bend and not break where Holmgren differs on issues. I don't see the failure on Mangini's part regarding QBs though. I think you are off on that. He's had Pennington and Favre, both established, and Clemens who is a bust. That isn't the HC fault, it simply is what it is. And as for the Browns... the QB mess here is pre-Mangini.. he inherited that, and I don't believe development is going to do much for either Quinn or Anderson. They are just inconsistent. I'd be looking for a new franchise QB if I were them.
eeehh.. maybe I'm wrong... that seems awfully fast... he meets with Mangini and has a presser that pm. It's almost like a jury coming back with a verdict in a couple of hours. Can't be good.
I think Holmgren should give Mangini a chance to rebuild that team. They have many picks in the Draft, and if Mangini were to be given a real chance, let him bring his own players in and prove he can win.
Here's a follow-up question. If Mangini is given his walking papers do you think that he'd be considered for any HC vacancies? Methinks not. DC vacancies? Pass. Position coach? Possibly. He's pretty much fucked himself because alot of guys will fall back on network gigs, ala Herm. Can you picture Mangini in front of a camera calling a live game? Shoot me in the head please!
Why wait? Just announce what you are going to do. Really as far as Holmgren goes, he didn't exactly set the world on fire in Seattle, though they did make a Super Bowl.
He did a great job in Seattle. From 1989 thru 1998 Seattle had only 1 winning season and no playoff berths. From 1999 thru 2008 the Seahawks had 7 winning seasons and 6 playoff berths including 5 straight from 2003-2007.
