I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but I happened to be watching ESPN news today around 1:15pm and they had some abbreviated coverage of Marvin Lewis' press conference. Basically, he sounded non-commital about his starters playing. When asked if what happens in the Patriots game would make a difference in who played he said "we'll see, it could come down to a game time decision" (paraphrasing). My thinking is that if the Patriots win, or even if they don't -- Lewis may sit his starters and give his old pal Rex the playoff berth. Just my two pennies.

It's interesting. They just lost Ray Malaeuga (sp?) to injury, so that may affect their thought process and decisions about who plays and how long they play.

I expect their starters to play for at least the 1st Half and then get yanked. Furthermore (and I think someone else mentioned this on the board earlier today), since we would be facing them in Round 1 the following week, I'm assuming they're gonna conceal as much of their gameplan against us as they can -- if they do indeed rest their starters.

If they have nothing to gain why would they play anyone of significance? What if Palmer gets blown up? Then they're done.

This is definitely a hot topic right now, especially after yesterday's game.

Does their seed change whether or not they win next week? If so, that may be a factor. Not sure though.

More importantly, I think you don't rest them the entire game because you want to eliminate any chance of rust, along with examining what gameplans work/don't work against the Jets (and again, this will prolly be limited as they won't want to reveal too much of their gameplan for the following week against us).

No it doesn't, NE is the 3 seed right now, if they win, they're still the 3 seed and regardless of what the bengals do they're still the 4 seed.

Okay, so nevermind the seeding aspect. But I still stand by the other reasons.

Losing the LB doesn't matter. Word on the street is the Jets are signing Kimo Van O for this game.

We do have to remind ourselves that we are the Jets and beating the Bengals backups is by no means a gimme.

yeah I'm going to go ahead and put my nutsack on that philosophy and believe that the jets will rape the Bengals backups, the same way the raped the Colts backups.

Agreed. I think it was Leonhard who said that when Painter entered the game, the Defense smelled blood in the water. I think the same will go for the Bengals' backups.

And hey, at least Ryan Fitzpatrick isn't Palmer's backup... so we should be okay.

In my opinion, the Jets will beat the Bengals if they start their starters or not. Then they will do it again in Cincy. BRING IT.

Yea, cuz we made Chad Henne look awful.

I like our chances vs. the backups, but the game is no gimmie.

Henne's been surprisingly good all year. I don't think JT O'Sullivan will do much better than Curtis Painter.

Chad Henne was a starter in the wings. J.T. O'Sullivan...nope. No NFL game is a gimmie (2004 Bills vs. the Steelers' third stringers) but the Jets have to come out completely flat footed to not be ready for this one. So long as the Jets prepare for the Bengals like they did for the Colts, they've got it. The Leonhard quote UB mentioned is all you need to know about the defense's confidence and ability going into this game.

Cincy is beatable at their full strength. We were in the game against Manning, we beat Brady, we shut down Schaubs offense, held Brees to just 10 offensive points, there is no reason to believe in this D. If our D can keep Cincy with in 14-17 pts, our offense has a chance, even though our Pass offense is one of the worse in the NFL. Afterall, we do have number one rushing attack in the NFL.

Interesting thing is, Cincy's D is great against the run. Jets rushing offense is the best.
Cincy's Pass D is average at best. Jets Passing offense is below average. You just can't ask for a better matchup, and I hope we see starters against starters for 4 quarters and not have to listen to the BS we did beating Indy (even though it was just over a quarter of a few backups).

At least O'Sullivan's played in the NFL before though (and was a starter for half the season last year), Painter was in his first regular-season game.

If it comes down to the Jets or Ravens making it in my guess is they will sit their starters. NE could tank their game for the same reason.
