No Jet QB has had an individual season as good as Vinny 1998 but as far as Jet careers go Chad is ahead of Vinny.
I'm too young to have seen Ken O'Brien, but I will say that Chad Pennington is one of the most underappreciated Jets by some. This guy played his ass off and was really a very good qb. Not an elite or great qb...but a very good one who got this team as far as he could. With a better defense (he always played with average to maybe slightly above average defenses) he may have taken us even further. All three of the top qbs other than Namath are actually quite similar. They all had potential to be great, had one amazing season and then were average to slightly above average from there on out.
I agree w/ alot of what you say but in 2004 Chad had an excellent defense and that was the main reason we were a kick away from the title game. In Chad's defense he was playing w/ a major injury but we were in that Pitt game b/c of the D.
You're right we did have a very solid defense...more of a run-stuffing unit than a pass-stopping one, though...we had great lbs with barton and vilma, but our cbs were barrett and donnie abraham, safeties erik coleman and reggie tongue...and certainly not a great defense by any means.
This about nails it. Loved them both, if I had to win a big game I start Chad. When he gets hurt I bring in O'Brien and hope we can block.
I voted for O'Brien only because he was able to see the field more as a Jet, even though he was injured often as well. A healthy Chad was a GREAT quarterback, but it is tough to come back from surgery so many times. I would love to see how the 2002 Chad Pennington would play with this Jets team
When healthy it wasn't even close, Pennington by a mile. Pennington had a plan and when his arm was sound could execute it. O'Brien had an accurate arm and very good weapons. He wasn't mentally tough in the big spots. Pennington's injuries were the problem. O'Brein looked at time like he wanted to curl up in fetal position in big games.
Must be all the kids......... voting for Chad. Ken O'Brien had more success behind Center for the Jets then Chad. There was a time '85-'86 where our offense was almost unstoppable. It it wasn't for injuries in '86 we might have won it all. I can remember watching games against the Seahawks and the Falcons back then and just thinking to myself "Wow, they can't stop us". I haven't had that feeling with a Jet O since.
Saw both, went with Chad on this one. But I think the thread overall reeks of desperation. Who discusses former QBs during the season? Or is this simply a case of SOJ Fans?
hahaha.. that is great... sad but true. Kenny O was a far better QB than Chad. Chad was great for 11 games in 2002. He led us to a 41-0 slaughter of the Colts, and we thought "Oh, boy. Here we go!". That was it. That was the pinnicale. He went into Oakland and stunk up the joint, hurt his hand in the next pre-season, and he was done. So he had the best 12 game career of any Jet QB save Namath. Everyone blames the defense. As a passer, Chad could not hold O'Briens jock.
We are talking about QB, not passer. I've hated on Chad for so many reasons, and rightly so, but Chad took us to the second round of the playoffs twice, and the first round once. We won a division title in one of the most thilling seasons in Jets history. That last game against the Packers was one of the best ever, I'll never forget the Jets fans watching the Pats/Dolphins game finish as the Dolphins won and gave us the chance to win the division, and we did! 2002 was great. 2004 was also great, Doug Brian cost us a chance at the AFC championship, and then we had 2006, which was hard, but chad still took us to the playoffs when everone said he was done. Chad took us further in the playoffs then Kenny, and thats at the end what counts.
QBs primarily do 2 things, hand off and pass. So if you concede that Kenny O was the better passer, then I guess you are saying that Chad handed off better. Hmmm.. you may be right on that. As far as playoff, again the perception differs from the reality with Chad. The Jets backed into the playoffs in 2002, killed a good Colts team, got our hopes up, then Chad got killed in oakland. He looked like a deer in the headlights. In 2004 the Jets luckily got past the Chargers when they missed a game winning field goal to force overtime. Then the Chad led offense scored 3 points in the loss to Pittsburgh. 2006 was mostly smoke and mirrors with Mangenius. Except for the second patriots game, they beat bad teams with their easy schedule and got a wildcard at 10-6. They were then promptly dispatched by the Patriots, one and done. The problem is that Chad could not beat the good teams consistently. He was really good at beating up the bad teams, but usually came up small in a big spot. With Kenny O behind center, you always had a punchers chance. With Chad, not so much.
Have to agree with you on this. Kenny was probably the most sacked QB in the league many of the years he played. He was part of the problem, was not mobile at all & waited way to long for an open receiver. Tough to compare to Chad where offense designed for quick short pass. My vote goes to Kenny, he was the better passer with much greater range. Just think of what he could have done with a decent OL.
O'Brien was suprisingly good. I think chad had the better career. but had O'Brien had better coaching and not played in the Marino, Elway error, he would be recognized allot more. Much diff style thrower than Pennington, not as smart but much better arm.
Most Accurate Passer could be very misleading in fact, but it is what it is. A completed pass is better than an incompletion in almost all the scenarios. I haven't seen Brien play, but Chad was and may still be a decent QB even after yet another surgery. Two times comeback player of the year is also an accomplishment. Chad never had a reciever like Al Toon. Chrebet was nothing more than average, especially in his yrs with Chad (if you take your green glasses off). Santana Moss never turned out to be what was expected. Not even going to talk about McFuckmyhands. Cotchery developed late in to Chads Jet career. Never had a reliable tall TE either(although IMO Baker had solid hands, and could have been used a bit more). The OL wasn't a top 10 while Chad was here. He had two of Curtis Martin's declining years along with a few really good ones. Im not too aware of the 90s team but you couldn't really get much worse than this. My vote goes to Chad. People talk about arm strength, but thats all bullshit for the most part of it. Testaverde never accomplished much here even though he wasn't bothered by shoulder injuries. #4 (d*ckface) stunk it up in NY and the reason was his arm strength that he kept on using to throw to the defenders. Anyways Im going off track here.
