there is no rebuilding for this team. We have many experienced players. Sanchez needs to work and play the quaterback position better. Rex Ryan is experienced at being a coach not a head coach but a defensive coach. Im sick of those fans saying oh its a rebuilding year! Its not a rebuilding year we need to play better. Rebuilding year? so I guess we need to teach them how to kick a field goal in the off season comeon? We can say we have rebuilding for years. oh next year were going to be so much better, no were not just like last year were going to find new ways to lose.

    Good post.

Part of the problem with all the focus on Sanchez, pro and con, is what you allude to, and what we will be looking at a great deal during the upcoming off season, and that is that the 09 Jets were a team to win now that was led by a Qb of the future, if that. The time lines are problematic.

Look at the consistent and effective OL. Yeah, Mangold and Ferguson still have good seasons ahead of them, but not the rest of the line, and there's not alot of talent being groomed on the bench.

Jones had a great year, again, but how long can he keep it up? Meanwhile Leon is a bit of a question mark and Greene puts the ball on the ground too often.

For the receivers, the starters are good, and young, but that's it. Still no slot receiver, requiring keeping Keller in there, who is still not a good blocking TE. Again, no depth.

DL we have the indominatable Shaun Ellis, who is getting old, and Jenkins who will be coming back from injury, again not a young guy, and that's pretty much it.

LB is a relatively younger corps, but that includes Gholston, and I don't talk about him. Scott is not a young guy.

In the secondary, many will want to move Rhodes this off season, and I happen to be a fan of E Smith. But they are already short a quality CB, imo - not an age thing, but there is still a need for upgrade here, and Shepard is neither the answer nor young.

Sanchez meanwhile showed no improvement this year. He will suddenly blossom next year? Maybe. Or maybe he will take more than that. Well, in two years, how many of those older starters will still be around and will be contributing?

Putting aside the decision to draft Sanchez as a longer term prospect, and whether that works out, the Jets can certainly be criticized for having a team filled with veteran starters and unreliable Qb play. Look at the teams in the playoffs - Favre, Rivers, Manning, McNabb, Brees, Rodgers, Palmer.

I fear that the diverting timelines problem, if you will, means it will be a few years at best before the Jets will be real contenders, if that.

Sanchez is at least 2 more years out from being able to properly execute a modern NFL offense. This is because he didn't have the higher level playing time in college and now he's in waay over his head. You'll see flashes, but mostly you're seeing what it is. A kid that shouldn't be starting for a team that considers itself a contender with a veteran core. Everyone here seems to miss the fact that the older Sanchez gets, the older his Oline and RB gets as well. Time is not on Sanchez's side with the present grouping of guys on the Offense. We won't even go into the mediocre WR position or the lack of gamebreaker anywhere on the roster.

seriously cimini made some excellent points :

    1. You could see this fourth-quarter collapse coming from miles away. You can't play with a 7-3 lead for 47 minutes, blowing countless opportunities, and expect to get away with it. Especially not when you're the Jets, playing a big December game.

    2. Riddle me this, Batman: How could the Jets run 33 offensive plays in Falcons territory and not score any points? It's game like this that make me wonder about O.C. Brian Schottenheimer. A first-and-10 pass into the wind, resulting in an interception? That wasn't a smart call.

    6. Tony Gonzalez is the most prolific pass-catching tight end in NFL history and the Jets don't cover him tightly on the game-deciding play. Are you kidding me? Come on. The Jets' defense might have the No. 1 ranking, but they came off as frauds. A true No. 1 defense wouldn't give the game away like that.

    ~ ~ yup
    cheers

ha, I must have said a version of that 5 times during the game. "If the Jets don't make a play in this quarter, Matt Ryan will fuck them in the ass at the end of this game. You can't keep Matt Ryan at bay all day, something's going to give.... who wants it more? Let's go you fucks" That's what I said.
I truly believe Rex re-assesses where he's at in terms of his OC next offseason. I don't know if Tanny would allow it though - he loves Schotty. I think we get more of the same next year.

You play physical bump and run all game, and then the last play of the game you don't play bump and run and no one does their fucking job. You deserve to lose.
