After NFL fine, New York Jets' Kerry Rhodes ready to start over at safety BY Kristie Ackert DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITE Kerry Rhodes may or may not have won his starting job back, but what's for certain is that the NFL disciplined him Friday. The league fined the Jets safety $5,000 for throwing the ball into the stands after his first of two interceptions in last Sunday's win over Carolina, Rhodes' first game since his demotion. Rhodes believes that two games after being pulled from the starting lineup, he has earned his starting spot back. "Yeah, I think so. I don't want to say it's concrete, because I don't know," said Rhodes, who lost his spot to Eric Smith. "But that's pretty much it." Rex Ryan, however, was noncommittal Friday, a day after the Jets' win over Buffalo in Toronto. "I will let it play out," Ryan said. "We'll see what happens." Rhodes, who had struggled all season, made huge plays in Sunday's victory, but on Thursday night his biggest was a missed tackle on the play that set up the Bills' only touchdown. He finished with one tackle. On Tuesday, Rhodes finally met with defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman, who mentored such standouts as Ronnie Lott, Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu and Rod Woodson. "Why anybody wouldn't take advantage of that is beyond me," said Ryan, who pushed for Rhodes to meet with Thurman. "I don't want Kerry Rhodes to be average. I want Kerry Rhodes to be great. If he has that ability and maybe I'm not quite seeing it, then I am laying it out there to him. I want him to meet with Dennis Thurman." Rhodes said he never felt like a player who needed to go to coaches for help. "You've got to humble yourself, go in there and talk to a guy who has played and coached a lot of great players," Rhodes said. It took 11 weeks, a demotion and a demand from Ryan for the meeting with Thurman to happen. "He was a mentor to Ronnie Lott," Rhodes said. "To hear a name like that makes you want to tune in." MORE ADVICE: Cornerback Darrelle Revis said he admired the "heart and effort" that Mark Sanchez showed in diving for the first down on the play on which he injured his knee Thursday, but wants the quarterback to learn to be more careful while scrambling. Revis suggested that Sanchez should talk to former QBs like Jeff Garcia and Steve Young. "It would be good if he could get some feedback from them and maybe pick their brains," Revis said. This pussy won't turn to Dennis Fucking Thurman when told to do so? Praise be to Our Lord Revis Christ for his admiration and advice to the young Franchise QB. Revis gets it, and he will be the unquestioned leader come next year. The defense will feed off of his consistency and leadership if Ryan chooses to have full-season captains next year. I think he has to.
i am now officially tired of kerry rhodes. i am ashamed that he thinks he is good enough to have it take 11 weeks to speak to someone... i am confused on why rex would say something and have it not be followed, that SCARES me. he could listen to revis but he might have better luck picking their brains, off the floor. those 2 guys took too many hits to the head
and his pussy excuse for a shame that he put on last week. i would be ashamed of myself if that was the best attempt i could make at a tackle.
He thinks he's won his starting job back after that incredibly weak tackle attempt in the Bills game? And he has to "humble" himself to ask his position coach for advice? And he has to be ordered to go to see him? Keep this clown on the bench. Smith has brought much more physicality to the defense and that's what this team needs. Reading between the lines, I think Ryan is getting tired of him too.
"He was a mentor to Ronnie Lott," Rhodes said. "To hear a name like that makes you want to tune in." he just found this out now?fuck him, just another average player that played hard for a contract and now could care less.
Rhodes' attitude is terrible. He should remain second string, Smith is still playing better than him.
It seems that Ryan has told Rhodes to do this more than once. Since his starting job is gone, he kinda sorta woke up. I have a feeling Sanchez will reach out to a bunch of QBs in the offseason to learn more. The kid has been well known for learning, but his stubbornness gets in the way. Its annoying for a coach to know the kid has the info in his head, but doesn't choose to use it. He'll grow up, and he'll be great.
She has to humble herself to talk to a guy who has mentored, literally the best to ever play the game? This speaks volumes.
seriously, can we get this sad sack off of our team?? Anyone would feels they can do better on their own than talk to a guy who's coached up some of the best every to play their position should just enter the douchebag olympics and be done with it
Interceptions are interceptions, but I didn't believe for one second Rhodes was back after the Carolina game.
I would hope not. One of those INTs was practically a punt, the other was legit. INTs usually don't tell the story with DBs anyway.
*sighs* Sorry to read this. Another ego driven wasted talent that will do wonders on another team next year, ala Randy Moss and Wes Weilker (sp?)
"Rhodes said he never felt like a player who needed to go to coaches for help." Translation-- When you're a balla like me, can't nobody teach me shit.
I really wish he would turn it around, he was an awesome playmaker before he got his new contract. I hope he reads forums like this to maybe light a fire under his ass that us fans are sick of his play. A player that's so concerned about his image probably does look at this stuff.
