They Said It : the week of Nov. 23 Nov. 23, 2009 - by PFW staff Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009 Jets CB Donald Strickland, angry about a block he received from Patriots OT Mark LeVoir Sunday, as quoted on Boston.com: "I think it was a real cheap shot. He really didn't have to go at my head like that, especially with the NFL's precaution about helmet-to-helmet contact." Strickland added: "It happened. It was a block and he took advantage of it. But I guarantee you the next time we play them it's going to be a different story. I'm making a point of emphasis to retaliate. That's the way I feel." ~ ~ Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 ~ Jets head coach Rex Ryan plans to involve himself more on the offensive side of the football, as quoted on recordonline.com: "I need to be more of the game manager than probably what I even realized before. There's been some people here that have been critical of that, and it's probably more accurate than I wanted to believe." Ryan added: "It's not a threatening deal or whatever. It's just something that my role needs to be this, and I think that's my responsibility. I oversee the whole football team. I really need to start doing that." > http://www.profootballweekly.com/2009/11/23/they-said-it-the-week-of-nov-23
I thought that was a great block. I don't understand why Strick is upset about it. Publicly promising retaliation probably isn't the smartest thing to do.
They didn't give enough angles on that block, but I thought I saw contact with the helmets. Not that I think it was a cheap shot, Strick needs to keep his head on a swivel. He just locked in on Welker on that play and let himself get blasted.
Posted: Wednesday November 25, 2009 11:39PM; Updated: Wednesday November 25, 2009 11:39PM Jets' Ryan using code system to help struggling rookie Sanchez FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- New York Jets coach Rex Ryan has installed a code system with Mark Sanchez in an attempt to cut down the rookie quarterback's mistakes and provide him with a clearer idea of the tasks at hand. Ryan said earlier in the week that he would take a greater role on the offensive side after focusing almost solely on defense. The code words -- which Sanchez said probably wouldn't make sense to most others -- are reminders of when the offense needs to be more cautious or can take some chances down the field. Ryan said the procedure should help Sanchez become a better game manager. Sanchez has struggled after a terrific start. His 16 interceptions are the second most in the NFL, and his 61.1 quarterback rating is the worst of any starter. > http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/11/25/jets.sanchez.ap/index.html
The block was clean, but it was cheap because he could have easily just pushed strickland over with is hands, instead of lowering is shoulder and nailing him.
It's the Patriots, and Strickland was our only passable answer to covering Welker on those bubble screens. I'm sure it was coach's orders.
listen you cant whine because you didnt have your head on a swivel. a smart guy would have turned a little and got a block in the back. if its the play i am thinking of. he should stop whining and threatening people and just go out and play. he got you next time be more aware.
if a jets player did that block, this whole board would be in it's glory talking about the smack you in the mouth jets. this is football people, you're gonna get hit. that the name of the game, "hit or be hit"! i don't know why this is even a subject for a thread in this forum. we had a team starting out the year talking tough like a bunch of hard nose grunts. now, more than half way thru the season, all i'm hearing and seeing is a bunch of pussies with excuses for all the loses... it was a clean football hit from what i could see. he got run over by a freight train left tackle.
even if it was "cheap" which i didnt think it was. why cry about it? let the fans cry about it and find a way to make sure it doesnt happen again. no need to say these pussy threats either. thats just a stupid comment. since when if a guy COULD have just blocked him with his hands and knocked him over is it cheap to actually hit him? thats a tremendously homeristic comment and quite pussy if i might add.
I think that play was designed specifically to put Strickland on the sideline, honestly. Who would you rather have covering Welker? Strick or Coleman/Lowery? But when he defended those bubble screens in the first game, he showed a tendency to stop at the LOS and make the slot man make the first move. They used that hesitation tendency against him and while he was stopped at the LOS on that bubble screen, but Levoir pulled far outside and his assignment was clearly the nickel corner, because Strickland has excellent footwork and quickness and was matching up better with Welker and Edelman than any of the other corners. Levoir was going to deliver a crushing blow to a cornerback whether or not that cornerback saw him coming. Levoir will no doubt be rolled up on in the next meeting. That's the Ryan way. And I don't think it's cheap. It's football.
it very well may have been. i am sure it was done to send a message... i am willing to bet that the next time they ran it he was at least paying attention to the fact someone could be coming. but hey thats good planning by the offense. i would be all about running that type of play if it were my team and someone was making tons of plays on a particular route. i would want to do what i could to throw him off his game and nothing does that better than getting cracked by a big old o lineman.
isn't it illegal to lead with your helmet? that's what he did, i remember watching the replays and it wasn't helmet to helmet. real cheap, hope he gets revenge
I thought he led with the helmet as well, the stadium audibly gasped at the hit, which made a huge noise, similiar to when two helmets hit together....hard. To each his own, but I thought is was cheap.....and designed to hurt.
"THE NEXT TIME THEY RAN IT "--------------I believe he left the game and did not return. Swipe one of ours and we swipe 2 of yours? I did not see that in the game and wish we had swiped 2 of them---especially during that bomb to Moss but thats just me
That bomb to Moss was uncalled for. Guarantee that someone is getting a cheap shot thrown at them the next time the Jets/Pats play. I would put my money on Brady....as bad as it sounds, thats the way it is, and BB put his players in a bad position with the mentality that Rex has....
