You don't sound like a die-hard Jet fan at all, like you've claimed to be. I can't wait for the rest of the home games, I want to be there for Mark's first 300 yard game. Besides watching the Jets too. Why do you bother???
The way I lookk at things, we have lost three games almost exclusively due to the fact that we have a rookie quarterback . . . given that fact, I am fine with the season up to this point.
Thanks... I troll here a ton, but don't post very often because most of the time, what I want to say has already been said more eloquently. I just needed something positive to hold onto after the Pats game and I realized how I felt before the season started. I didn't expect anything in particular. It's a rookie HC and QB. We're looking at a building team that can and will be (imo) championship caliber within a few years. The only reason people are so upset is because we started 3-0 and subsequently gained huge expectations for our team. Then losing all these games has been heartbreaking. I agree, especially with too much trickery. We should have been a lot more like the Ravens of the last few years. Solid, well oiled and crushing defense with a strong O-Line & running play carrying our rookie QB. I just hope that the coaches and players don't buy into the media nonsense. This is not a championship year. It wasn't when we were 3-0 and just about anyone who knew anything about football knew this then. We just got caught up. Let's get realistic and realize what needs to happen. And that's just ironing everything out through the rest of the season and starting to look at what positions we'll need to draft for and what positions we can obtain through free agency to be complete in all three phases of the game. I like the moves they're making so far, in firing the line coach and Ahmed Carroll. I like how he's reaching out to coaches for advice. He seems like he's really flexible (Ryan) And willing to admit mistakes. I think he's got all the right assets to be a HC that the players can respect and work hard for. This season has really been about a rookie QB learning the NFL and small mistakes otherwise. Without the Rookie QB or the small mistakes I think we're 7-3 right now with this team. Definitely.
I didn't say I was okay with the record, I said it was what might have been expected. The fact that it could be 7-3 is what hurts because I think you have to take chances when they arise. There is no guarantee that those chances will be there next year.
I agree. You can not discount the injuries- and the one to Jenkins was a season-killer, I knew that back at the time. Oh well.
Oh Lord, this thread title is beyond laughable. I'm still trying to figure it out.... There must be some kind of hidden meaning in that title somewhere....
That's accurate. That's what really bothers me about the Edwards trade. Regardless of whether Edwards booms or busts long-term in New York, the mentality behind the trade was "Super Bowl: we've got the last missing piece." It's a terrible football decision to force a rookie quarterback to rely on a wide receiver whom he's never met. Jerry Jones tried to do it with a veteran quarterback last year; it just doesn't work. This shit ain't plug n' play; there's a long installment process.
Correction on your post: The mentality of the fans was that the trade was "Super Bowl: we've go the last missing piece." Rookie QBs are going to struggle no mattter who they have to throw the ball to and yes there is a long installment process. So don't you think the Jets and Sanchez are going to be that much further along in 2010 after the bumpy road this year? 10 games with Edwards in 2009 is going to jumpstart that learning curve and process for 2010. The fact of the matter is that the Jets are trying to remain competitive while attempting to fill the most important need position on the field - the QB - with a rookie. And the bottom-line is that with minimal exceptions, that is an impossible task for even the best of teams. And guess what? Even Flacco and Ryan's performance hasn't been perfect in year two as their teams benefited from crappy schedules last year and they are playing harder schedules this year as a result of last year's inflated record. I could care less how many INTs Sanchez throws this year because they really don't matter when you are rookie QB. What matters is learning the offensive system, getting comfortable with the timing/speed of the NFL game and applying the two in actual game scenarios. You can't do that on the bench and that is why Sanchez is and will remain the starter for the remainder of the season. How can anyone honestly believe that benching Sanchez at this point is going to do anything for his development? The Jets are not making the playoffs this year and those 6 games will be greatly help his development. By the end of the year, barring injury, Sanchez will have played 16 games - matching his college total. He needs to play in bad weather and compete in games that don't mean anything - that will challenge his preperation and committment to the game. If he just shows up and plays out the string, then we have a problem. However all signs seem to point that this kid is a fighter and this adversity will only make him more determined to get it right next game. If anyone wants to put Clemens in at this point, they are missing the whole point of drafting and starting Sanchez in game 1. That move was never about 2009 and it was only the fans and the media that had inflated expectations. And I don't buy this crap that Rex set the expectation level too high. He said his goal as a head coach was to win a Super Bowl - he never guaranteed it was going to be this year. What the heck did you expect him to say? That he wants his money or that he is just looking for the letter from the Commish inviting him to the playoffs ala Herman Edwards?
None of us should be content with the way this season has gone so far. Rookie QB and rookie coach my ass - we have the talent to win every single game, and we've been in all the games we've played since the beginning. We've beaten ourselves in nearly all of our losses, so enough with this "we'd be lucky to win 7 games" bullshit. This team failed us this year, plain and simple.
Either the talent is overrated or the players are underperforming. My own assessment of a 7-9 or even 6-10 record was based on the fact that the Jets entered the season too thin at wideout. I agree with Cotch that there is great difficulty in plugging in a new receiver mid season, but with practice and coaching, assuming the talent is there in the first place, on balance it still should have been an upgrade. Now it looks like even with Edwards 6-10 is a very real possibility. I am disappointed in that, and the late losses by one score are where the difference has been. At least two of those losses are Sanchez's fault. I can understand using a rookie Qb in a way that he doesn't win but doesn't lose games for you. He is losing games for the Jets. THAT I don't think we really anticipated, but perhaps I am having trouble remembering...
im not ok with the season so far, but not surprised at the record, knew sanchez was going to be learning also rookie head coach, im a little upset with the defense though, you can say they have a new scheme new players but every team has new players every season, and its not like the current jets havent played in a 4-3 or a 3-4, sanchez is not protecting the ball which causes the defense to be scored on close to the goal and be on the field alot.
I love the experts here who blindly assume that the only way for sanchez to improve was for him to start as qb. He wasn't ready to start. He still isn't ready to start. He has not improved. His performance is killing his team. He should have been studying the game from the sidelines, watching 8 hours of film a day, taking tons of snaps in practice and being groomed. Instead they rushed him into a starting role that he was not prepared for. The results have been predictable: he is the worst qb in the NFL.
I am OK with the season so far, why? 1. Many great quarterbacks of the past had really bad rookie years. Look at P Manning. 2. The JETS gave the Raiders their worst home loss ever and I get to rub it in my Raider loving friend?s faces forever! (say that 5 times fast) Peace
Painful to think about but true. I would even say he's getting worse. The CS boxed themselves in by annointing him the starter before the season began. I personally would have him sit, but that's going to be a very difficult thing for Ryan to do. It's great on one level to have a coach who is open and says interesting things, but Ryan has also said some things that will make it very difficult for him to change his approach without coming across as lacking cred. John Elway didn't start his first season at first. When he did and didn't play that well, they sat him again, and brought him back later. There's nothing about history to suggest that once you start your high pick prospect at Qb, there's some rule that you can't take him out.
First my points: I am NOT OK with the way the season is going however, I understand and accept it. The Jets are NOT an embarrassment like OAK, WAS, CLE. This team is losing but they are losing by close margins. Losing by close margins tells me that this team is on the precipice of greatness - just a few peices shy. I believe in Rex Ryan and he should be our HC for the next 10 years. I believe Rex overestimated the play abilities of some of the players. I believe the FANS overestimated the ability of a Rook QB with 16 college games of experience. He is playing his senior year and then some this season. I sound like a broken record but we, as fans, need to have patience with this regime. We can't pass judgment on the HC with 10 games. Now for my debate. I watched my father lay cement, trowel, lay bricks and cement blocks for foundations for decades. Helped him on the weekends while I was a teen and he gave me a hand with the repairs and flatwork when I bought a house. 3 years ago I started a decorative concrete company. I have been working with a trowel and associated mason tools at least once a week for the last 3 years doing installations. I am just now starting to get the quality looks that my father can produce. Don't tell me that standing on the sidelines holding a clipboard is going to help Sanchez' development. He needs to play. I don't care if he's getting sacked as much as Rodgers in GB. Get him on the field and keep him there. The only thing Sanchez needs on the sidelines is a VET QB to help him along - Clemens does not qualify as a VET QB. And don't give me no bullshit that masonry is different from being a QB - a job is a job - chef, mason, schoolbus driver, auto mechanic, actor/actress, pro football QB Watching someone else work, going to school, or reading a book is no substitute for hands on experience.
It's not the standing on the sideline holding a clipboard that develops him. It's the practice reps, getting used to the pro environment, settling into the team, facing NFL quality defenders in scrimmages, getting used to his teammates on offense. There comes a time when the player has to step onto the field to progress, of course. But you cannot just write off the concept of letting a young player study his trade a little before jumping in. And your own analogy falls down. Should you have just dived straight into building houses rather than learning from your father? You would have more than a few lawsuits on your hands if you'd done that. You're right that a job is a job. And in every other job you start out slow to learn the ropes.
I said before the season that Sanchez shouldn't start out of the gate, but if he did, that was it, they had to commit to him 100%. Does anyone here honestly believe that Kellen Clemens would give us a better chance to win? Honestly? If so, here's your sign. Go sit in the corner. Sanchez will develop. Those that think he's regressing may want to actually attempt to watch the playcalling before you make judgements. He's being asked to do too much, too soon. This team's #1 problem has been coaching. #2 is the injuries. A distant third could be the play of Sanchez, but anyone relying on a rookie QB to perform at the elite level is just football stupid. We were a sub-.500 team coming into the year, and we'll be one going out. Get over it.
I've enjoyed watching the games this season. I believe the JETS have been competitive. We have a rookie coach, a rookie QB, and a lot of talent. The injury bug has bitten us. There's a lot of good, and a lot of bad. But unlike many years, I'm hopeful for more learning lessons in the last few games and with a good offseason (and keeping our coaches and systems) we'll take a big step next season. The Pats are aging and beatable The Phish are getting better along with us The Bills are a mess. That's all good for us.
