Well I guess they need someone to push Alex Smith. They are screwed either way.

I guess Cleveland is goin with Charlie Frye and Dilfer will just be a back up with the 49ers, I dont get why you would have to trade for a back up QB though isnt Kerry Collins out there lookin for a job?

Cleveland tried twice during the draft to trade for M tuiasosopo. I don't know who was crazier- cleveland for trying to or Raiders not accepting it.

    Missed quarterback sack
Savage inquires about Harrington, Tuiasosopo, but no deal materializes
    By Patrick McManamon
    Beacon Journal sportswriter

BEREA - The Browns made calls during the second day of the NFL Draft to try to boost their depth at quarterback.

The team was not successful, but inquired about the Detroit Lions' Joey Harrington and the Oakland Raiders' Marques Tuiasosopo.

``We made a lot of calls,'' General Manager Phil Savage said with a shrug Sunday.

Savage said the Browns were trying to bolster the position and said adding another quarterback would ``absolutely not'' have led to the release of Trent Dilfer.

``Sometimes you just make exploratory calls just to find out what's going on for your own information,'' Savage said when word of the Harrington deal broke on ESPN.com.

However, the Browns have been made aware that other teams might be interested in acquiring Dilfer, so if they had another young quarterback, then they might be more able to trade Dilfer and acquire a draft pick in return.

Dilfer had knee surgery in February to repair a partially torn patella tendon. He is still rehabbing his knee, coach Romeo Crennel said.

Asked if the talks to acquire Harrington were a reflection on Charlie Frye, Savage said: ``Absolutely not.'' He added Harrington would have been acquired as a backup.

``Detroit was out there trying to sell Joey Harrington,'' Savage said. ``A call was made to see what is it they're looking for. He's a former No. 1 pick, and we've seen them cycle through the league, and the second time they're better wherever they land. We said we'll make the call and see what it is.''

Crennel tried to call Harrington, too, but said he and Harrington only exchanged phone messages.

    What did they say?

``That's between me and Joey,'' Crennel said.

Harrington apparently balked because he already had been given permission to find a new team and had committed to the Miami Dolphins, pending the Dolphins working out a trade with the Lions for a 2007 draft choice. The Lions were hoping to get a pick in this year's draft but were not successful.

As Savage said: ``Harrington is going to the Dolphins. It's a dead issue.''

    Dilfer declined to comment.

The Raiders evidently said no to trading Tuiasosopo, who has played five years and has 75 career passes. There were rumors that the Browns liked him last year and tried to acquire him, but they instead turned to Dilfer.

The Browns touted Dilfer as the perfect backup quarterback and mentor to Frye, and Crennel has refused to name Frye the starter.

Savage has said part of Crennel's reluctance was to show proper respect to a veteran quarterback. Dilfer completed 60 percent of his throws last season with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

David Dunn, the agent for Harrington and Tuiasosopo, did not return a phone message.

If the 49ers are smart they'd play Difler. It was painfully obvious that Smith was no where near being game ready. He really needs a good few years riding the bench.

    No.

In the salary cap era, QBs drafted in the 1st and 2nd rounds must play before their third season unless there is a damn good reason for them to sit (see Brees-Rivers, Favre-Rodgers, and Gannon-Tuiasosopo and that's it). Otherwise, what does the team do? "Should we resign this guy? He hasn't played. We already spent a shitload of money on his rookie deal. Gee, I don't know."

The 49ers weren't dumb. Smith played and was okay.

    (see Brees-Rivers, Favre-Rodgers, and Gannon-Tuiasosopo and that's it).

Maybe add (Pennington-Clemens) to that in a year?

Pennington will have to stay healthy and play well and the Jets will have to win. That's a lot to ask.

Okay, let's suppose Pennington takes all the snaps this year. Then what happens in 2008? Pennington would be announced as the starter again.
Maybe Clemens would take over sometime during the 2008 season and then the team would experience some growing pains. That might derail the 2008 season.
That's bad. I'd rather see the Jets make the transition this year. It makes so much sense.

(If anyone is wondering, this thread was bumped after I was searching old Raiderjoe posts. I saw something here that I had to respond to.)

    Why bump up this thread?

I got to give Smith credit cause he really came a long way in his second year despite possibly the worst 1st year for a QB ever.A lot of players would of had their confidence shaken after that bad a year but he bounced back and could be the next top tier QB if he keeps progressing. He's still got a long way to go though.

Saying that it was still a mistake to play him in his 1st year, more harm than good could of came from a 1td-11 int season.

    An explanation was provided.

Plus, there is no rule against bumping.

Teams that draft QBs in the 1st or 2nd round, should play them before the 3rd season or there was no point in drafting the guy.

What they do the first year depends on the coaching staff and the player. Some guys played and had terrible rookie seasons (Bradshaw, Aikman, Smith). Others sat (Palmer, Culpepper) and were good the next season.

The biggest reason to play Clemens this year is that the Jets aren't going to win regardless of who steps in at QB. The decisions on the lines have made that clear.

As Cakes has pointed out handing a team that is looking to make the playoffs off of a so-so season to a first time starter is just asking for trouble. Let Clemens get his feet wet in the year when the Jets have few expectations. The odds are pretty good that only pleasant surprises would come out of that. If you hand him the Jets next year after they went 7-9 this year then he basically has to play at a very high level coming out of the chute or he'll be seen as a failure.

Chad is a dead-end. Clemens is the light at the end of the tunnel.
