I think we would've taken VG even if Rex was our coach. Anyone have any good reason to disagree?

the jets should have done what they had planned to do.was to trade down for more picks.because they were not enamored with the picks in the first round.thanks to mangini.he stuck his two cents in and demanded that the hets pick gholstoni.

The draft is a gamble...plain and simple...every year for every team. Sometimes you win (Revis, Harris, Mangold, Leon)...sometimes you eat shit...(Clemens, Gholston).

Great Post. First of all, not everyone loved Gholston. There was a ton of fighting over this pick. My choice was to trade down and get either ARC or Leodis. Since then how many picks have we burned trying to get Revis help? I also loved Calais Campbell and thought he could be a 3-4 end. I was killed for that as well. 3-4 end was and still is a greater need for us than a LB. We has just signed Pace! Mangini made a lot of mistakes that year.

I think you are right. While Gholston hurts because we had to go 4-12 to get the pick, and hopefully we won't be at that spot again unless we trade up for somebody we are really sold on. In general, our good picks have out-weighed our bad ones over the last 4 years, and we also have had a few surprizes from nowhere (Ratliff comes to mind here, plus our 4th round picks have been pretty solid).

He isn't a bust. he has been improving all season his first season w/a real coach and in a new position. People give up on players way to early. The defense is a top unit in the NFL and he is a part of that. Some players take longer to develop than others do. VG is one of the good guys. Works hard does good things when he is on the field. People's expectations were ridiculous for him. But thats fans for you.

im not defending Gholston but Pace was considered a tremendous bust for 4 years till he was in a contract year. we lucked out in him not being a 1 yr wonder.

It's funny but if you go back 2 years on this board everyone (well a huge percent anyway) wanted Gholston.

He's a bust, oh well, time to move on.

Good point, The Ghost, Chris Long, Harvey and Dorsey as of right now, are looking like major, major premium pick blunders. Don't forget about a guy that should never have been passed on in the top 8 and that's Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie who is on his way to stardom. Can you imagine if you guys had him to pair up with Revis ? Yikes ! You can blame that on fatboy. He had every opportunity to deal down and still get DRC and he was so petrified of the Patriots drafting the Ghost that he wouldn't budge. It was documented that he turned down a couple of trade downs because of this. Unreal. Well that's why this is going to be Erik the Donutman's last season coaching any football team.

DRC was the guy I wanted Belichik to draft and he was going to if Mayo was gone after the trade down to 10. Mayo was there and he was the pick. I'm not complaining, I love Mayo, but DRC should have been the 1st Corner taken what were the Bills thinking, I guess that's why they are the Bills. I knew DRC was better than McKelvin after the combine.

Pace was a bust as a 4-3 DE and exploded as a 3-4 OLB. If Gholston follows this model then we should probably deal him to a 4-3 team before his contract season.

If I remember correctly, that whole draft was being touted as a 5 man draft. We were picking 6th. All the "Experts" had us picking Gholston. Unless there was a surprise pick ahead of us, we were screwed. We tried to trade down and NOBODY wanted the pick. Lets be honest. A bad pick in the top 10 will screw up your salary cap for the next 5 years. In that situation, unless you are 100% sure of who you want, there is no point in trading up.

Just cut him next year when there's no cap

That's the best way to handle the Ghost

I would be so much more inclined to believe the that if the guys drafting #7 and #8 didnt trade back right behind us...

I would glady have accepted either the deal the Pats got or that the Ravens got to slide down.

I wanted Dominique Rodgers Cromartie but everyone said it was a reach and he was overrated, he doesn't look too bad right now, way better than Gholston at this point.

VG will be released after this season due to next year being uncapped. Let someone else wait for the switch to suddenly flip on while carrying that huge salary. Even the Rams aren't dumb enough to let Chris Long go straight up for Gholston. Long may not have he production but he has the heart which is something you can't teach.

the jets war room wanted to draft down.but mangini stuck his two cents in.he demanded that the jets draft gholston.tanny was not keen on the choice.but he did not want to go against the head coach.so now we are stuck with gholston and mangini is gone.
