This is true, most people were happy with the selection and were paranoid someone was going to trade up ahead of us to try and get him (if only they had).
Brett Favre all the way. Hated him before he became a Jet, was kind of excited that he came here because, well, I really hated Chad. Then, after the way last season went down, I can't think of any other Jet that I wish had never ever worn the uniform.
Mike Nugent...... a kicker, a f-in kicker..... and he SUCKS. Sums up the incompentency of the Hermway administration and their degredation of a talented football team in one statement at the podium.... Bryan Thomas........ I still see Ed Reed when I see him (see above)
Ty Law, and it's not even close. Played for a hated rival for a long time, then signed a fat mercenary deal for us, refused to mentor our young corners, and spent every Monday driving up to Boston to watch Monday Night Football with Richard Seymour and his d-bag Patriot buddies. He didn't even pretend that he wanted to be a Jet, was just here to collect a paycheck... I bet you there are less than a half dozen Jets who even have the guy's phone number. As for guys like Doug Brien, let's not confuse crushingly shitty play with "difficult to root for." Nobody here was cheering for him to MISS those kicks against Pittsburgh, right? Same for the Adrien Clarkes, Vernon Gholstons, and Drew Colemans of the world. I don't see how you can say it's difficult to root for them. They might not be good players, but we're all still thrilled when Coleman picks off a pass, aren't we? We might all curse these guys a lot, but it's not like we want them to fail... we just want them to be better at football. Law, on the other hand... it made me absolutely sick that he led our team in INTs the year he was here. Whenever he picked off a pass (and MANY of his picks that year were lucky, batted balls or throws that hit the WR in the chest and bounced straight into his arms), I would literally be angry that it was him and not some other Jet that pulled it down. Now THAT'S "difficult to root for." For me, anyway.
Hey Miano, It's as if you have been reading my mind. On the money, dude. Those cakeholes were the ones who held back the Jet team that except perhaps for the 98 team had the best shot at winning the SB since the Namath days. Those F'ing guys. How can you not hate them?!?!? But since you already mentioned them, I will add Victor Green. I know he made plays from time to time, but imo he got burned far, far too often. Out of position, a very inconsistent tackler, and on the field, unfortunately, far more than David Barrett who must have been trying to model himself on Green. F that guy, too.
Ty Law; Farve; Chris Baker the touchdown ma... Well he tried to make touchdowns... UJF - right on the money. Just because guys are poor players doesn't mean you can't root for them. I get a sinking feeling every time I think of Doug "Finkel & Einhorn" O'Brien but he was a good PK for us for a few years. Same for Gladys - he isn't a great player but you WANT him to be a monster for us... Gladys - I love how a single post can influence so many - me included...Bawhahaha!
I'm surprised it took this long for his name to come up. I think he was exactly the definition of "difficult to root for," at least for me. Plenty of the other players that have been brought up stunk, but as others have noted, I never wished that someone else had made a good play that they did. I always detested Keyshawn, which has nothing to do with me recognizing that he was a good player. I was absolutely thrilled when he was traded for two 1st round picks (although it is unfortunate that one - Becht - turned out to be less than hoped for). I was never a big Gastineau fan, either. I fully appreciated his talent, and what he brought to the team, but I always thought he was a douche, and the sack dance utterly moronic.
I think you are confusing "not particularly likable" with "difficult to root for." Keyshaw and Gastineau, while by all objective measures are complete dicks, were two larger than life superstars on the field for the most competitive teams the Jets have fielded since Super Bowl III. If you were rooting for the Jets in those years, you had no difficulty rooting for them, because they were making so many of the plays you were cheering for.
For me, it would be Rick "Quag" Mire. After Vinnie went down, I really rooted for the guy to come in and do well, but it simply was not going to happen. Ray Lucas salvaged the season, but never really materialized into a very good QB when he finished with the Jets and moved to Miami.
Agreed--sometimes it goes with the territory of being a great player. They were two of my all-time favorite Jets. I still wear my #19 to the games and of course I've had one of very few Gastineau avatars on here for a while. Truly great players on this team have been few and far between--those two guys, Toon for a short time, Curtis Martin and that's about it. Am I missing anyone?
