IMO its a waste playing Vilma in the middle. Before the draft I read an NFL scout describe Schlegel as a "dinosaur" and the Titans dumped Kassel because he was too slow. Both players are suited to play in the 34. Vilma's main strength is speed and the Jets should take full of advantage of it by playing him on the weak side.
i disagree, the advantage of those "dinosaurs" is having them next to vilma, they go attack the line and create traffic where vilma will easily be able to fly around and make plays. hes already proven he can play MLB, hes been playing it. dont change a good thing. people act like vilma is soft, i would point to our tired defense and james reed for seeing so many OL on vilma. vilma is known for making plays at the line and behind the line due to his sideline to sideline speed. having him in the middle means he'll have good access to both sides of the field, but RARELY do you see people make plays coming across the whole field. IMO you just need to see the advantage of having a fast MLB, hes tough as nails so i dont think he should be moved outside. i mean you do make valid points, but i think people are just bored and trying to come up with various 4 LB theories. ill just wait to see who they field and then analyze the results.
vilma isnt big enough to create a pass rush, id imagine the pass rush would come from bryan thomas and eric barton? seems good enough to me. and you took our pass rush. so dont ask stupid questions lol
Abe's going to have a great year playing on the same line as Rod Coleman, Patrick Kerney and Jonathan Babineaux.
dunno bout that, rotating him will keep him fresh but if he gets stuck with two good blockers in front of him his reaction will be to cut around them leaving a gaping hole for your running game. hes not as bad against the run as people say, but that was his run defense as a 4-3 DE where he didnt have to take on 2 people at the point of attack.
I agree. People need to understand that MLB isn't just about ability. He's usually the brain of the D. That's Vilma, the QB of the Defense. Look up Bruschi's weight and smarts. We may not have a Wilfork in the middle but thems is the breaks... Vilma is and will be the leader of this D for a long time to come, don't deminish him by playing him out of his natural position...
The guy is a playmaker against the run and the pass-he is an instinct guy and instinct guys dont play on the outside
No no no. Vilma is a beast on the middle who has sideline to sideline speed. He is not a pass rusher, he is a run stopper and playmaker. Moving him to the weakside would be a mistake.
The Jets are going to have some holes going into 2006, and it's because they are rebuilding a mess caused by the neglect and ignorance and utter disdain of the last regime. Until the process is complete we might end up having to settle for some middle-of-the-road starters at a few key impact positions because you cannot successfully rebuild in one year with a salary cap, or at least it has not been done yet. Due to the nature of pass-rushing OLBs and DEs, I think they can provide immediate impact at some point down the road, say, in next year's draft while they address positions like O-line which need much longer time to develop into impact starters. The idea of moving Vilma to the edge in a 3-4 sounds interesting on the surface, until you realize what Jon Vilma's talents are. He is the on-field coordinator of our defense, and he's good at it. I can't get totally behind him yet because of the travesty of a season we just had on both sides of the ball, but I still think he will be developing steadily. When you move him to the edge, you take half the field away from him and you take his heightened instincts and leadership abilities out of the equation. No way can I get behind that.
Vilma isn't big enough to take on guards consistently and the fact that he would have to read two gaps and fill on every play will take away from his 'play making' abilities. He's just not a great fit as a 3-4 ILB. I think moving him to the weakside OLB, in 3-4 packages, is what Mangini is going to do.
i knew we were in trouble from day 1 when James Reed was named a starter next to the D-train...who by the way....IMO is overrated as well. Don't know who will be the big monster in the middle for the 34 but i hope its Pouha
you're a tool. did the ravens switch ray lewis to OLB because of his speed or what? that makes absolutely no sense at all and it is annoying as hell.
Yes, his only downside is his size. That is what makes him perfect for ILB. IF we have two speed rushing OLBs like Barton, and maybe THomas will be good for that too, then Vilma's job is to go sideline to sideline, avoiding blockers and shutting down the run.
Vilma is the only east/west guy we have in the LB corps. No way we move him outside, and take a full side of the field away from him. I've never seen Shlegel (sp?) play, but from what I have read, he is a north/south guy too, which doesn't exactly make me happy. Vilma and the secondary are going to have a lot of work to do. The way the D looks right now, I don't think anyone is going to be able to run on us. I am worried about the pass rush a lot though. The loss of Abe looks significant right now. Hopefully people are right about Thomas making the switch successfully. I still think Hobson and Barton can be successful on the outside, so it's still wait-and-see with them. The line looks like the biggest question mark really. I'm not that familiar with Kimo's blocking, so I don't know how well he is going to do. I think Ellis and DRob may find more success in the 3-4, since they will not be called on to move the OLine, rather than rush. Hopefully Pouha can step up to help one out of every five or six downs. The kid we picked up in the seventh looks like he is perfect for the 3-4 NT position, his only downside being he needs to rest quite a bit during a game to be effective. Since we will really have 3 guys who can switch in and out at NT, he should be fine even late in a game. Long story short, Vilma has to stay on the inside, where he does the most damage to opposing offenses. I fully expect to see another 100+ tackle season from him.
oh well, cant please everybody. nice marley av tho hey you can live with my stupid sig as long as my posts are worth reading so its all good.:breakdance:
