Keller ended up not being so key against Oakland thanks to their turnovers, but again, if Cotch is out, getting production from Keller would be big. It's just not a given, given the way he's been going this year.
I'd be 100% with you if I weren't 100% behind keeping the ball on the ground most of the game. I want play-action to open up receivers, not Cotchery. Unless he's 100%, in which case I damn well want him on the field. From what little I paid attention to him Sunday, Keller looked a little better. I think it's a product of Sanchez not looking for him, so he gets lazy, which takes him out of plays. (That's my guess, and based solely on what little I've noticed of him lately.) I think once Sanchez is comfortable enough in this offense to spread the ball around, Keller will again be the weapon we all expected him to be.
I know Keller was unimpressive against BUF. But this week I dunno how many idiot Jets fans I heard bitching about Keller when Sanchez' throws are so off target to him. I do think it might be what Alio alluded to though. Rarely do you see mark checking Keller off on progressions its almost his last read. I wish we'd hear some fluff piece about Sanchez staying late with Edwards and Keller. but we havent. so all we can do is hope it comes together. And if Cotchery says he'll be good to go thats music to my ears. Hopefully he is at least 90 percent no use in having him tweak his hamstring against a depleted shoddy MIA secondary. but if he is good to go, Sanchez could feast off play action.
Miami has a very good run D. We have a the #1 Run O, but most of those yards came against the 32nd and 26th ranked run D. I don't know how effective we would be against Miami though. We werent very successful against them last time around. We put up 138 yards on the ground, including 38 via two fake punts (100 against the D, 38 against ST). We need to put up atleast 150-175 yards rushing if we are to have a chance. Cotch played injured and Brad Smith got injured during the game. Clowney stepped it up in that game, and Im hoping he can step it up again this wk as he did last wk aswell. We need Cotch this wk. If Cotch is not there, Edwards will get doubled, while Clowney and Keller find it difficult to get open. With Cotch, it changes the entire offense. If they double Edwards, Cotch gets one on one. If they double both, Clowney will go one on one against a nickel CB and get a huge potential play while Keller becomes an easy blanket. Sanchez needs his two WRs. Jets will have a hard time stopping the wildcat, hence they need to be agressive with the ball and put up 30+ if they want a chance to win.
Sanchez was late to his presser last week because he was working after with his receivers to build chemistry.
Here's my thing, you do what you're built to do, and you challenge your opponent to stop it. This offense is built wonderfully for a ground attack leading into a play-action pass attack. The first Miami game, Schottenheimer played cute, and tried to use the pass to set up the run. The big problem with that is that once a defense gets a handle on your passing game, you're shut down. If they stop the pass they can expect the run. If you have two backs like Jones and Greene, who can grab 4 in a chunk, you run and run and run until they prove they can stop you from getting first downs. Then you play-action to your receiving threats. What I don't understand is why we stopped doing this. There were flashes early on, where I said to myself "Whoa, Sanchez can sell that fake!" That's a product of setup into execution. Grind it out, hardnosed, 60-minute football. That's what Rex preached, that's the way we're built, and that's what will win ballgames. Plus, again, we really need to have superior TOP. Allowing Miami's offense to have the ball would be killer.
If you rememebr last game. Miami held the ball for large amounts of time. Trying to play a TOP game with them is setting up a scenario where every drive needs to be successfull , do we really want that with a rookie QB. As others have stated we need to exploit the weak Dolphin secondary , get up by 10 or 14 points and put pressure on their offense, we do that by opening up the offense and stretching the field. Everyones sees those gaudy rushing stats and believes we can just run over any opponent. Miami's run D is not Buffalo or Oakland - Sanchez is the key to this game.
I really want to see Cotchery play this week. He is Sanchez?s go to guy. The passing game is the way to beat the Fish. With Allen down they will be very vulnerable to the pass. Sanchez has to throw it to the guys in Green though. He needs a confidence booster, and this would be the perfect spot
i think this week will call for a much more balanced offensive attack just because the dolphins are so bad against the pass. i still think we need to run first and run often but i hope to see sanchez passing on 1st or 2nd down a bit more. i'm hoping the o-line has hit a nice groove playing against some of the weaker run defenses and will have more success against the phins. i will be looking for greene to have a monster second half.
That is the picture of the goober everyone wanted to punch. He captures it so perfectly, it just cracks me up.
I agree, a balanced attack is what is called for, blending the Jets' strengths at running with an attack on their weak secondary. The latter consideration suggests that Cotch coming back will be quite helpful, especially so unless and until Keller produces more.
This is more what I was trying to say. It's not like I'm trying to take the ball out of Sanchez's hands, I just want to establish the run, and let it open the passing game. This team is built to run. I don't care who the defense is. You do what works until they prove they can stop you. Then you open the air attack. (And that is not to say just run exclusively for a quarter and a half. Throw on a few first downs early, but go run most other plays. Unless of course those early throws are ridiculously successful, in which case, again, do what works till they figure out how to stop it.)
Cotch I think our best bet is to run the football early. In all likelihood it will be difficult against Miami's run def, but we can at least use the run to set up some passes.
If its difficult to run against Miami then how exactly does running set up some passes. The only thing that would set up is 3rd and longs. We need to pass on 1st and 2nd downs to take advantage of Miami's suspect secondary. When we have success passing it will force them to commit to a pass rush and open lanes for running. So in essence its quite the opposite we need to pass to set up the run. The key to the game though will be jumping out to a lead and forcing Miami to get into passing situations.
