Leon Washington...... This guy is going to be a special player. I have known him since his junior year of high school, which, incidentally, happened to be his first year of high school football. Not only is he a great player, but he is an even better person. If I could guarantee one thing, it would be that Leon will not have any off of the field issues. I used to co-host the #1 rated sports talk show in North Florida and have been watching Leon completely dominate the competition in high school, then go on to very good success with the Florida State Seminoles. Let me be the first to say that he is going to be a star the same way that Dave Megett, Tiki Barber and Wayne Chrebet (a local star) have become. This guy's power is uncanny but more importantly, the way he hits the hole and the balance that he maintains is something that us Jets fans will come to appreciate. Now, I'm a New Yorker who has lived here in Jacksonville since '00 and I have seen plenty of football; this guy is going to be the truth and a perfect guy to potentially take C-Mart's place;#29 (if he keeps the number), will be a very good player for the Jets to say the least. If he would have come out last season, he would have been a second rounder at the very least. Coming off of a 195 yard Gator Bowl, many thought that he would leave but he came back abd Bobby Bowden and his nepotism did him and the rest of the offense in. By the way, he did have the second highest yards per carry average as a junior at 6.9.
Sorry bro but I cant see it. He is nothing more than a third down back. No running back in the NFL as of right now is having success who stands at or under 5'7. His size will limit him and because of his size he will never be able to carry a full load.
Can you let him get a few carries b4 you start to call his career a failure? Every now and then someone comes along to put an end to these certain "trends" that everyone else has become stuck to. We don't even know the exact type of offense Mangini will run here. With that much uncertainty you can't make bold predictions like that.
hrmm actually i dont kno lol.....alot of sites have him at 5'9" but then i find 2 that have him at 5'7"
Actually I think we will have a backfield that will have a lot of change of pace. Maybe not explosive like Denvers RB's system but I guess more like NE in Pass, Faulk, Dillon and whoever else they run out there. I think we will have a small stable of RB's. Nobody is going to carry more load than Curtis at least for this year if he stays healthy. There will be a lotta split time between the others to spell him.
he is really more 5'8 than 5'7. i think its like 5'7 3/4 something like that.. guy is 5'8 with cleats thats all i know.
fftopic: But everytime I see this guys name I think of Budweiser Leon. http://leon.budweiser.com/leon_home.html :breakdance:
Your could be correct but I remember that was written about Blair & he found out quickly that the NFL was not college which is why he failed as he became afraid of getting hit by man not kids. Hope you are correct but time will tell if you are
haha i made a post earlier about my Leon Washington take as I am a Jets/Noles fan and live in FL so ive seen plenty of him too. he will not be afraid of contact i guarantee that, his height may limit his complete workload and endurance as compared to a "workhorse" back. but his skill set is to go around people. when he has multiple defenders coming though he will lower his shoulder and continue to chop his feet till he is unwillfully down though that i guarantee, for someone his size you wouldnt expect such a relentless rushing style.
Good to hear but we will see if he even makes the team as the move up from College to the pros is real huge & the players are faster/stronger then he ever saw in college
All you need is a supporting cast, the short guy doesn't have to carry a whole lot. Kevin Faulk- 5'-8" Patrick Pass- 5'-10" Antowain Smith- 6'-2"/ Corey Dillon- 6'-1" Derrick Blaylock- 5'-9" Dontrell Moore- 5'-10" Leon Washington- 5'-9" Cedric Houston-5'-11" Curtis Martin- 5'-11" As far as height and weight they are both pretty similar except for the NE's premier back. And even at that, Corey was hurt a lot last year. Grant it they have a passing game but after we figure out our QB problems we could be okay. Curtis may very well be able to reach 1,000 yards if these other guys can support well. Cedric may be the closest thing to Curtis' replacement but I don't think that will come clear till possibly at the end of this year. We still may have to find a top RB in the next year or two if what we have doesn't pan out. Side note: Corey Dillon was able to gain 1000 yds under this system. But with the Jets line needing time to gell, by the time they are ready C-Mart might not be considering his age. Then again stranger things have happened.
I have been comparing Leon Washington to Kevin Faulk since the second we drafted him. Leon will be great on 3rd downs and could also be a decent special teamer. Screen passes and draw plays will work really well for him.
I agree for the simple fact that you don't start for Florida State by being some bum...he is obviously a hard worker with a good upside...He can potentially take CMart's place, but ONLY IF the line (D'Brick and Mangold) live up to there name...if they create time for QB and holes for the RB, lights out baby!!!
"I have been comparing Leon Washington to Kevin Faulk since the second we drafted him. Leon will be great on 3rd downs and could also be a decent special teamer. Screen passes and draw plays will work really well for him." He seems to have better moves than Faulk.
Why is everyone always talking about the 'prototypical" size for a running back? The top 3 leading rushers in NFL history are 5'10" and shorter! Emmitt-5'9"; Sweetness-5'10" and Barry-5'8". Leon favors Emmitt more than the other backs; he does not have the o-line that Emmitt had, but you guys will see what I already know in due time. By the way, the weights of the 3 aforementioned are, 202, 209 and 203 respectively; their best weights that is.
It's a knee jerk reaction.... guys like Kiper say he's too small, so he must be. Many backs bigger than Washington can't hold up either. It's not so much size, it's how they hold up individually. Tiki isn't big, but he's hard to get a good hit on.... Martin is the same way. I recall Cedric Houston talking about this.... and he listened to, and learned from Martin as to how to deal with a big workload in the NFL. There are things that some players do that help them recuperate faster. Martin told Houston all about his regimen, and how it helped him regain strength and overcome (and to avoid) injuries that can limit performance. I'm not about to declare Washington as too small to handle it. He desrves the chance to try before judgement is passed.... just like any other rookie the Jets drafted.
