For a defense such as ours...why cant we get to the quarterback???? The reason why we didn't or couldn't get any sacks last night was because the Dolphins were picking up 6-7 yds out of the WC and giving Henne manageable 3rd downs to convert with whenever they ran a traditional formation play. Everything stemmed from the WC last night. Had we been able to stop it and make them run any other play but the WC, they would've played into the hands of our D. Unfortunately, the Dolphins pretty much took our D out of their game-plan.
It is because the Jets can't get pressure out of a rushing just three or four, that is disappointing, but fact. They need to rush five or more. When the offensive scheme makes you gun shy about blitzing you have what happened last night.
We don't get sacks because our defensive ends stink. Ever since we got rid of Abraham we've had some of the worst DE's in the league. If you're a defensive end, your job on pass plays is to get to the QB. They can't ever get near him except maybe once a month.
4 sacks in 5 games is brutal for any defense, let alone one that was being called elite until last night.
We don't have great pass rushers, we have an attacking D that didn't attack last night. In previous games we were harrassing the opposing Qbs whic is why they all struggled against us but henne was very comfortable in the pocket thanks to no pressure. I don't care about sacks but we needed more pressure.
Our de's primary job is to collapse the pocket and fill their running lane gaps. If we had abraham here doing that...we'd be seeing an even bigger diaster.
The sack option has been inactive. Can Admins here create a new board for forever depressed Jet fans. Thread after thread of the same BS, we're still in fucking first place. For all the complainers why even watch the rest of the way, go watch hockey or the CFL or something. We certainly don't need all this SOJtitude.
It's called making adjustments, the NFL is filled with some excellent coaches and since the Titans game we have seen more 2 tight end formations against us.

I think that'll change once Lito and Strick come back...we're using Drew Coleman in the slot and he's literally #5 at the position on the depth chart. He's been playing alright but he needs a seat back on the bench. Just gives us more versatility to have those guys back, we can blitz 3 or 4 and not having to worry about somebody getting burned out there. I know rushing 3 isn't Rex's MO but there are sometimes when it's appropriate to do so. We can also disguise blitzes much better with those guys back. Look at how our defense looked in the New England and Houston games with our full defense (sans Pace). Strick is awesome in DB blitz packages but because of our lack of depth we really can't afford to overload blitz 3 DBs the way we used to be. I was kind of hoping we'd sign Corey Ivy for depth, he's not the best cover corner in the world but he's very familiar with the schemes having played for the Ravens.
Out of the guys in the current d-line rotation there isn't anyone that can provide a speed rush on the edge to beat one on one blocking. Our best pash rushers are guys who either play on the inside (i.e., Jenkins and Ellis) or rush as if they are inside linemen (i.e., BT and Gholston). Jenkins is probably our most consistent pash rusher at this point and he usually has to go through 3 guys before he can get to the QB. D Harris and Bart Scott are good blitzing linebackers and Rhodes a good blitzing safety but they are not pass rushers. Pace and BT are good all around OLBs but not true pass rushers. This may come as a shock but out of the guys that play I think Gholston has the most potential to provide a pash rush on the edge. However, the only move he has developed thus far in his career is the bull rush. In the NFL that will get you a sack once every blue moon, especially when the opposing offensive tackles realize that's all you have. I think on 3rd and long situations Rex needs to consider playing guys like Westerman and Murrell who although undersized provide more speed on the edges. Gholston can be moved to inside in these spots cause he is a good bull rusher.
It seems like Jenkins is out there on an island by himself, if he doesn't do something, nobody does...Lito and Strickland's return will help the pass rush by holding coverage longer...
