    Westhoff

    - loves Trusnik - says he's an extremely powerful guy, raw athletic ability, 'knocks them on their ass' - 'when he hits them, it HURTS'- talent off the charts

    - only had to talk to Rex for 3 minutes before he knew 'He got it' in terms of knowing importance of STs in his interview to stay for STs Coach

    - Weatherford showing improvement in punting game - 'has peaks and valleys'

    - Made a Ray Finkel Laces Out reference walking about the laces on one of Weatherford's FG holds - LOL

    - Had a physics junkie/real estate guy worked as advisor for Westy and worked up a graph measuring the angle of approach of Feely's kicks during camp and some preseason to chart his progress improve accuracy - impressed Westhoff

    Pettine

    - Bart, Leonhard and Douglas have done excellent job spreading knowledge of the schemes on D and the learning curve has been lessened because of it, helped ease the change of practice tempo early on so it took less time to adjust

    - Eric Smith - utility player - they use him to get rid of coverage mismatches for RBs/TEs (from his comments, I expect Eric Smith to be manned up on Reggie Bush a lot) - one of the better pass rushers - has a complete skillset - 'thrilled to death to have a guy like that' - can put him in non-traditional positions

    - Gholston - graded out well against the Titans - not a guy you will see a lot of flash from - did a very nice job collapsing pocket on Collins - has taken it upon himself to get better - had such a good week of practice that the increased his reps last week - getting better using his hands to get off blocks - ** TIED UP 2 BLOCKERS ON THAT CHRIS JOHNSON PLAY BEFORE HE CHASED HIM DOWN, JTURDS! FROM THE MOUTH OF THE JETS' DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR!

    Schottenheimer

    - Running game - they are working on combination block, hat placement and footwork issues to clean the running game up

    - Similarities between Sanchez and Brees? - leadership and personality - quick feet, good movement, very accurate - he's proud of what Brees has done - Sanchez probably sick of hearing about Brees in QB meetings

    - Sanchez does good job of run-checks but still adjusting - needs to learn to keep 2 hands on the ball for ball security - tends to drop ball down low, teams are scouting it his tendencies now

    - Talks to Brees every week but not this week

its amazing how important coaching and schemes are. You have a guy like E. Smith who seemed on the way out is now an important part in terms of taking a threat away and disguising schemes.

    fuck mangini.

if all Sanchez needs to do is keep the ball higher and keep two hands on it I think he's ok.

Time to run some zone blocking schemes methinks. Moore and Woody aren't getting the same push they were last year.

It's funny Mangini had all this talent and had no clue what to do with it, like a gramma driving a corvette. Rex and Pettine got here and are like holy shit, we've got some talent to work with.

When you look at our team right now (players, coaches) there really isnt a big change personnel-wise. Hell, Sutton is still here. It really is unbelievable what Rex has done for this team. And none of this "its going to be a process, give us some time" crap. These are my guys, were gonna show up Sunday and we are gonna play to win...love it! The other day I was listening to Dilfer's comments on the mess out in Cleveland, and he said some people were saying they dont have good players there. He said they do have good players, they are not being used properly and not being put into a position to succeed. He said that falls squarely on the coaches. No identity, no direction, gotta feal bad for the fans out there....I am soooo glad Rex is here!

I can't wait to see how this team is built over the next few years.
This years draft was short on picks for obvious reasons. Next year should be interesting to see how Rex starts building "his" team.

I wonder how much, if any, Schotty can help with game planning against Brees being that he knows him so well. He probably knows more about him than most coaches in the league.

I was thinking the exact same thing this AM. E. Smith was on his way out of the NFL and now he is making plays all over the place. (The INT last week was amazing)...

i actually always liked the guy minus the phantom trip in the endzone.

i think the scheme was the problem.

very athletic(not in downright speed but hes valuable in a jump ball, and has good closing speed) has a good feel for where the ball is and hits about 20 lbs above his actual weight.

some players just need roles, some of them you cant ask to do every responsibility for that spot in your system so you find what hes good at in what scenario and scheme his assets for you in various scenarios

Eric Smith was on the way out in the old scheme. He's getting the opportunity to play because his skill set works when he is playing in the box, which the strong safety didn't get to do a lot in Mangini's (or most team's) 3-4.

One of the guys writing up the Jet's defense after a couple of games pointed out that he seems to be getting the Doug Plank job from the 46 the Bears used to run. If you can find a guy who can play that role and you're playing that kind of defense suddenly he becomes very valuable.

I enjoyed the Westhoff presser. It seems like he was teaching everyone all these little details that get overlooked. The journos were really interested.

both westhoff and shotty were hoping for the jets' HC job, and both are still with the team doing great. says a lot about their grit.

Actually, every thing that Mangini used to preach, Rex does effectively.

Mangini wanted to run a 3-4 base hybrid defense that would tailer it's attacks to each team it faced. He actually just ran an ineffective 3-4 base with some inconsistent blitz packages and some gimmicky shit thrown in (remember that floating front 7 crap?) He attacked every team almost identically. People wanted to put the blame solely on Sutton, I know I was pretty guilty of that, but the Great and Powerful Oz with sitting back there chewing gum and pulling levers on offense and defense, apparently.

    - Rex had a heavy front 7 blitz on the Texans, mixed with various combo blitzes from the secondary - Houston was a mostly run-based offense after Revis and Rhodes took Andre Johnson completely out of the game.

    - Then Rex dressed 10 d-backs against the Pats, and let them spread the O, and he ran nickel and dime blitzes at Brady all day long, because their run game was rendered ineffective by the lone 4 DL players dressed that weekend.

    - Then we played the Titans, a run-based offense with an effective possession passing game. Rex dressed more d-linemen again, had Eric Smith holding down Chris Johnson most of the game in a hybrid SS/LB role, and the Jets D played a lot of short zone coverage to lower the effectiveness of the short passing game.

    - Add to that, I think he is very hands-off on offense, letting Schotty do his thing. This year is the test of Schotty's coaching abilities, and so far it appears that he's a pretty capable dude.

Each game has been a different defensive gameplan, and all have been effective when it counted. This defense is exactly what i wanted to see when Mangini came to town.

    Mangini promised. Rex delivers.

You know, we all give Rex a lot of manlove around here, and he deserves every bit of it. However, we all often overlook the rest of the staff, with the exception of Westhoff.

I've always been vocal in my support of Schottenheimer, and I expressed often how I thought it was Mangini handcuffing him. I think that's showing now. I really do believe that the reason Schotty stayed with the Jets is because when he walked into Rex's office, Ryan said "The offense is your responsiblity. I've got enough to worry about." That's all BS wanted to hear.

I still don't feel bad about how I felt about Sutton. I didn't feel he brought enough talent out of the defense. However, maybe part of that was Mangini as well. As I said the past few years though, I thought Sutton made an excellent coach but a terrible coordinator.

Pettine is perfect for his position. Rex conceptualizes, Pettine puts it together. I'm glad Rex brought him along. I'm very impressed with the way they've brought along Smith. Coming into the season I groaned when I saw him emerging as the starter. Now, I couldn't be happier with his progression. As for Ghoslton, well, we all know how I feel about him. It's nice to see the DC agreeing and talking about it.

Oh shit, yeah he is. I totally forgot about his hiring. No wonder E. Smith is making that kind of plays and forming to be a standout SS in the 4-6 as he's got the original 46 there to coach him.
It was also suprising to hear that he is one of our best pass rushers. I mean I've seen him making hits on the quarterback occasionally this season, but I had no idea the coaches valued and respected him that high. I just can't believe that the guy everyone was praising back in '06 as the one who'd take us to the promised land totally unidentified this kind of talent that Eric Smith has. No wonder the Browns have looked so out of place this season.

It was also nice to hear positive things about no. 50 from the coaches, especially as half the board were saying Rex had lost faith in him after his little playing time vs NE. Actually it was very promising to hear that Vernon wasn't even supposed to get that much playing time vs Tennesee, because they had different packages reserved for the game, but his outstanding play in practice impressed the coaches and increased his reps in the game rendereding those planed packages obsolete.
