Why is it a bad thing when someone says that they wish they were able to contribute more. That is what is being implied. If he said he should have been starting instead of another or thatr rex made a mistake by not playing him more thats something else. But someone saying they wished they played more is no reason to punish someone. At the end of the day this is his job. If anyone one of us went in to work and said, " Im glad my company is doing great, but I wish I was able to be a bigger part of that." I pretty sure you would not be punished for that.

No kidding....we've got young adults who should be taking their lives seriously and acting professionally (especially in his position) acting like 14 year olds...

I'm OK with Ryan dealing the discipline, but Clowney needs to play more.

The Jets offense is starting to look a little claustrophobic again. Aside from the deep sideline pass to CLowney (which was always part of the package with Chad), there is no deep balls in this offense. Everything is within 15 yards of the LOS.

Get Clowney on the field for 10 plays a game and throw him a deep ball at least once a quarter. Not only will it stretch the field for Stuckey and Keller (non-existant right now), but we may hit one of the passes or draw PI.

It's a bad thing to go to the press bitching about it (exactly what twitter does). There is nothing wrong with telling your coach you would like to contribute more.

It's over anyway. Here's what Ryan said yesterday according to Hutchinson. I be surpised if Clowney is NOT on the field on Sunday for a few plays here and there:

‘‘I was upset with him,’’ Ryan said Monday. ‘‘To me, it’s about our team. No individual is bigger than the team. That’s it. If I feel a guy isn’t putting the team first, then I’ll make that decision to put the guy down. It’s not head games, it’s just the way I feel.

‘‘That was my decision. Nobody else’s. I wanted to see how David would respond. He was phenomenal this week in preparation. He humbled himself. He did it. He’s got no business not being up. He’s too talented, too athletic, too fast, not to be a guy that we can count on down after down.’’

I'm happy that Ryan can make the decision for discipline at the risk of performance. This will pay off in the long run. Ryan is building a culture for the Jets that allows playing fast and loose but not too loose.

As long as the rules/punishments don't become too arbitrary (ref manmoron and the $1701 fine for water) this approach will pay off in the long run.

The Clown could certainly stand to learn a bit about maturity from this experience as well.

thats true, he caught a ball on a deep crossing route. so we still have no evidence of clowney getting open in the underneath, and only one single piece of evidence in three years that he can catch a pass on any route other than the go route.

That's the way I'm reading this as well... it's a good thing. And it sounds like Clowney (and maybe some others) got the message. It also sounds like Ryan is the kind of coach that is saying, "Okay! You got my point. And now it's over, completely over. So let's go out and play some football."

That's how I'm reading this as well. I've got a serious mancrush on Rex. He's obviously a great football mind, but he also has a knack for psychology. That matters. He's not just a coach, he's a true leader.

You know, reading Rex's comments are the reason why he will, if has not already, distinguish himself as a top caliber coach in te NFL. I think Rex handled it professionally, and I think if he calls David's number a fair amount on Sunday there is a good change that both he and David will come away from it with a growing experience in terms of respect and trust.

Right now Clowney only does one thing, which isn't getting him into the games. People dump on Brad Smith, but he presents options for a defense to have to account for and he's great on special teams, as is Wallace Wright. I think Clowney has the ability to be a great WR, but he has to focus and maybe this episode will set him straight. He doesn't seem like a bad guy or a cancer like a TO, just a bit of a goof.

The very title of this thread is wrong, I think, but would have been correct under Mangini. Mangini (and Herm before him) put people in the "doghouse" and then kept them there. Remember the punishment Pete Kendall got (the dorm fiasco?) He wasn't in the doghouse, he was in a fucking dog kennel. Also Chris Baker. Coles to some degree at the end. Same thing with Herm (Lamont Jordan, for some reason, pissed him off and he sat while Curtis Martin needed a fucking HoverRound toward the end).

I get the impression that Ryan is different (and much better at "punishment"). If he's pissed at somebody, he calls them in the office and tells them to their face, tells them why he's pissed and then tells them what the punishment will be. And after that, he expects the guy to learn his lesson and do things the Ryan way. If that's the case, then it's over and forgotten. Immediately. And he's praising the guy even (like he did with Clowney). No doghouse. Ryan's not the kind of guy that will keep malcontents in the doghouse. You'll either learn your lesson and play under him or you'll be on the bench and then gone. Much, much better leadership this way.

Putting a guy down for not putting the team first seems a little harsh.

I would consisder bringing in a dog whisperer before I put him down for that.

It was the right move. It's a fine line between being a player's coach and maybe being a little too friendly. Making this move re-establishes Rex is in charge. I think going forward this will be a good thing for Ryan, Clowney and the team as a whole.

If you don't put a stop on the mini bar right away the next thing you know he's going for the big bag of M & M's and your staring at an extra $7.00 on the hotel bill.

That bottle was 3 dollars man get your facts straight!

Seriously tho, I'm glad Rex made a pt by suspending Clowney. He doesn't want that perception that he runs this wild free for all with the Jets and that there are still rules in place that everybody must follow

    Rex is the shit!
