Who can complain about a 3-0 start, but the running game is less than I think most people thought in the beginning of the year with an o-line filled with 1st round picks, the AFC's leading rusher and a great change of pace back in Leon. Is it that the opponents are bringing 8/9 in the box and saying, hey rookie you beat us, or the o-line not making holes or the RB's not hitting the right holes and making the first guy miss? I'm sure someone has broken down every offense play and knows the issue here. I think it is a combination of all three. I know the Texans kept 8 or 9 guys in the box for most of the game and it does not appear that Jones is hitting the hole well. He seems to be hopping at or behind the line of scrimmage and then getting gobbled up. I see Leon hitting the hole more, but still only getting 2-4 yards up the middle. Just think if we can get the running game clicking and get Pace back and put the Ghost back on the bench how strong this team will be...
Seems like we need an upgrade at the FB position. Alot of us already knew that TJ is a compiler and doesn't break off big runs very often but it seems this year he'll get this 1000 yds 4yds at a time. Not sure if that's good enough..
I'm still diligently waiting for TJ to turn it on like he did last season. He's been dancing way too much behind the LOS when he should be hitting a hole. Instead he waits for Moses to part the Red Sea. Leon is smaller than TJ and he his the hole with authority and gets at least a few yards. TJ gets nailed at or behind the LOS far more than he should at this point in his career; it's like he's trying not to get hurt, so he can get one last payday with some other team. Disappointing to say the least.
I'm with you on this. For 3 weeks now, we've had pretty much the same discussion about lack of productivity. It was blamed on stacking the box, and for the most part, that argument holds water. But now, especially after yesterday's game, we're getting a clearer picture. Dave Hutchinson writes, "The Jets rushed for just 83 yards on 31 carries, a paltry 2.7-yard average. RBs Leon Washington (12 carries for 46 yards) and Thomas Jones (14 carries, 20 yards). Okay, so Leon averaged 4YPC yesterday and Jones averaged exactly 1.43 YPC, behind the same O-line. Can we now say there's a problem with Jones? If Shonn Greene is healthy, do we want to bring him in and at least rotate him with Jones to see what he can do? I like Jones because he holds onto the football, I'll say that much for him. But his production has been steadily dwindling and yesterday he hits the low-water mark of 1.43 Yards while Leon averaged 4 YPC behind the same line. Come on now! You just know Ryan and Schotty have to be looking at this also.
Thomas Jones sucks. He's a big back that doesn't like contact. His initial burst out of the backfield is terrible and unless the line opens a big hole he goes down way to easily. Jones looks great if the line gives him a hole and he can get to the second level but he's always been a jag and will continue to be one. He had a lot of long runs last year but he was never consistently good for 4.5 ypc.
See, I would like one of our reporters with access to Rex and Shotty to ask for their take on why TJ is struggling so far. I'd like to hear their take on it.
Ryan has been critical of the OL all year and he was again yesterday after the game. I think he is already saying why.
Thanks I wasn't sure if he had been asked. One thing tho, with teams loading up against the run on us, how much more can the O-Line do?? It almost seems that as well as the O-Line's issue, it might even be related to the overall play calling. It might be that we need to keep coming out throwing until they start to respect Sanchez as a weapon, and not to think he is the weak link because he is a rookie. I think teams are starting to learn this, but we probably won't see too many different defensive looks until the second half of the year.
It will be more interesting to see who's going with the team to NO to play. The inactive list might hold a few surprises..
TJ is 10th in the AFC LdUB is 12th in the AFC Combined we are 6th in the AFC in rushing, with a freaking rookie QB. If he throws it, they will rush. We rely on our defense, we all knew it coming in. Rushing attack ranked 6th, defense ranked FIRST. I will take that any day. Defenses don't go into slumps, they're either good or not.
IMO Curtis Martin was the greatest compiler at the RB position there ever was so compiling isn't that bad.
why when i post this people fucking go ballistic on me??? i said this shit week fucking one that TJ looked like he was missing burst and wasnt running downhill and i was ridiculed...this place is so confusing sometimes
People look at his stats and overrated him. He's a jag that's managed to stay healthy. He's very good if you give him a huge hole to run through (what nfl back isn't?) but he never breaks tackles. The Jets need a physical running back that can get 4 yards and fight for every last yard. Jones is not that and he never was. I'm hoping we Greene can fill this role.
Time to start my 'personal thread' about how people avoid the actual arguments presented in threads and rack up a bunch of misleading stats to deflect those arguments. There's a reason Tennessee has such a high ranked rushing D. It's the same reason the Jets had such a high ranked rushing D last season. Teams picked them apart through the air.
