We're #1 in yards allowed, #2 in scoring. Denver is #1 in scoring though remember 7 of those 16 points we've allowed were on a defensive TD by Houston. Our D has only given up 9 points.
I heard on sny.tv the Jets were ranked number 2 http://web.sny.tv/media/video.jsp?content_id=6795709&topic_id=6479520
Since there are no stats to back that up I will go with ESPN here and they say the Jets are #1 overall in defense.
Defensive scoring is kind of a null stat for best overall defense...in most situations it's mostly who the luckiest defense is.
NFL.com has denver as number 1 because they gave up fewer points than the Jets. Jets = 16 Denver = 13.
NFL.com has denver as number 1 because they gave up fewer points than the Jets. Jets = 16 Denver = 13. More important I think is that we are now 7th against the rush and 9th against the pass. And thats not becasue we gave up alot on either rushing or passing.
^ But we really only gave up 9 because Houston's Defense scored against our Offense when they returned the fumble for their only TD. I'm surprised the League's website would make this error.
Its not an error. No site takes points scored against the offense into account, its total poitns against that it is based on.
All I can say is... it's about freaking time!!! This defense has been sitting around on the cusp of something great for a couple of years now. Finally got the right guy to turn it into what it can be.
I thought points allowed as a defensive stat excluded points scored on the O or special teams. But I've been wrong before.
Not to digress even further, heh, but points against the team is a valid stat if that is the understanding or definition. But if we are talking about a defensive stat, points scored against the offense or special teams (excluding FG's, of course) should be excluded.
Rankings and stats in football are generally a waste of time. Just something for people to do all week in between games. Only kicking and punting stats are somewhat tangible.
boggles my mind that this defense has only given up 9 points against the two offenses they have played.
