well the bulk of the first off-season is finished with the "new" regime and IMO they are at most 1/3 of the way thru the overhaul. the old school thinking that probably still applies here is that it takes 2-3 offseasons to churn a roster and get your guys in place. QB included. 2 yers if your cap is not too bad and 3 years if you inherited a mess as they most certainly did. this was not going to be a fancy draft - thats why i rarely posted any thoughts, mocks, scouting issues, so on. it proved to be trench (OL) and special team heavy. with a few high priced guys still on the roster - drob, ellis, coles, maccareins, martin - they were not going to get too fancy at receiver, DT and RB. we replaced 2/5ths of our O-line in 4 hours and still have some leftover talent in there. it has gone from a severe weakness to at least par with the rest of the league and this time next year it probably will be a strength. the QB issue is a wait and see thing but getting a second tier guy was the MOST we could afford at this point and with an extra second rounder next year on the books the jets are already setting their sites on a QB for the 1st day next year. yes - we could have gotten a little juice from a guy like vernon davis or even cutler - who i know shanahan was slobering over himself when the cardinals took lienart. but there will be playmakers next year and the year after aand chances are the jets will be in the top 1/3 of every round in 07. the 2007 draft will be alot fancier than 2006 - look for the team to focus much more on the skill guys like WR, DT, RB and QB. have patience and lets see how the roster looks going into 2008 cause that should be the point of inflection for this team. jil
Good post.....it was the draft we had to have. There are a few stupidistas on here who reckon we should have gone for flashy players in the first few rounds, but that was impossible in the position we were in. Great job done by the new Jets FO.
Great post. Gotta agree 2007 we will grab DE, WR, RB, etc. This is a 2 year process, draft the foundation this year and fill in the skill players next year. Also look for the Jets to be more aggressive in 2007 for free agents.
I got that all along...this was the year to rebuild the line and switch to a 3-4. Next year wed address the skill positions. Thats been the plan all along So you think were not settled at QB yet, you dont think Clemens is the answer? I think we drafted him to be the future, but I certainly would not mind replacing him next year with a guy like Brady Quinn, Chad Henne, Brian Brohm, or Drew Stanton. These guys are just rare talents and as much as I like Clemens hes not in their league
I have to say I am please with the way the front office did not buckle under pressure and stayed the course with our first two picks. " WELL DONE " Now let this offensive line jell for a year and learn from their mistakes. Next year address the remaining problems and hopefully this team will be ready to make a serious push in 2008. Again well done.
We all agreed that this is the kind of draft we needed to have, however since we were also in a position to get a playmaker and it was available it was nice to think of the possibilities, especially considering how anemic our offense has been. I do think the Jets regarded Vernon Davis higher than some thought. And there could have been a possibility of him being a Jet if Mario and D'Brickashaw were taken in front of them. I don't think the Jets would have picked Bush because I believe another team would have probably moved up to pick him, but you never know. That being said, it wasn't dazzling, but we took care of needs, perhaps for the next 10+ years.
I agree with you except for the QB comment. I think Clemens is a tier 1 QB and just as good as Leinert and Cutler if not better. Let's wait and see. Great post.
We gotta see what Clemens can do for us first before we talk about any other QB's. We did trade up for him you know...
I agree. Next year there is going to be 2-3 DEs in the top 10, 2-3 WRs, and a great RT prospect. I don't think the Jets will be in the top 4 like this year, but will still be in the top 10. So there will be alot of different directions they can go next year. It will be another interesting draft at least. If McCariens does not improve significantly this year, WR will be top priority I think. Followed by DE and RB. Then finishing filling out both lines with a DT and a couple more OL (still need a heir for Kendall and a RT) - I don't think Teague and Clement will be here more than a year. But I highly doubt they take them in the early rounds like this year, probably in rounds 3-5. That is how I see it anyway. After the season though things might change.
