The reason the Patriots went for a 2011 draft pick instead of a 2010 is.............

The owners want what the NBA has, slotted pick amounts and alloted salary amounts per player which basically means the Patriots could use both round 1 picks and not have to pay huge money for an unproven rookie. The days of the Stafford contracts are over. Rookies will no longer get obscene guarenteed money.

Give Belichick credit he's way ahead of the curve on roster moves and cap management. He knows by the 2011 draft he can sign high draft picks for set (cheap) amounts.

It's fantastic from a Pats standpoint... they get rid of a guy they likely weren't going to resign and they also beat the system by making the pick in 2011. It's a shame the Raiders have become such a disgrace that they can't even agree to a sign and trade before aquiring the guy.. the other way I look at this is that the Raiders have such little confidence in guys that they take in draft that they figured they may as well trade for a guy so they can sell their fans ....see we are commited to excellence as we recieved a PB DL... my bet is Seymour never sees the PB again. Look at the garbage they have drafted... Huff, Gallery, Russell, HB and I'm sure DMC will be there before too long.... Al Davis should be euthanized.

The only positive in all this is that they didn't trade him to Denver for Marshall.....

man i hate these clever patriots bastards, it won?t be a big contract for them, because i?m pretty sure that if there is a new CBA upcoming, the rookie salary cap will be invented to keep this ridiculous amounts of money these unproven players get, in check, they will get a top 5 pick and don?t have to pay big money for it

Seymour is also on the last year of his contract and the Pats were probably not going to sign him and Wilfork. So now they have room to sign Wilfork and Mankins.

...and the raiders will need to pony up the big bucks for Seymour.

No, now it will be Jarvis Green, who has started for Seymour at least a few times almost every season for injury reasons (34 games in all).

It's so funny.... anybody who doesn't say it's the greatest trade in Oakland history and now they are a SB contenders gets shit on. It's alot like here except those guys are much much worse. Anybody with any objectivity is outcasted....that RaiderPaul is like our version of Dware......

Wow I did not see this coming at all. I guess the Patriots feel comfortable with Jarvis Green as their main guy... I'm wondering if this means they switch to mainly the 4-3 and have Burgess line up as a defensive end. What this basically ends up as is Seymour plus a 5th for Burgess and a 2011 first. I suppose this could backfire if there is a lockout in 2011 and lots of juniors sit out. I'll wait until after this season to decide how high a pick to expect, I know it's the Raiders but two years in the NFL is forever.

I feel it's good and bad for the Pats. It hurts them this year and next. They get a top pick in 2011 cuz the Raiders are awful and will be awful with a deal like this! 29 year old lineman! Yes a beast but still! The Raiders are no where near contending. They think Seymour is going to be here when they win again? They're insane. Another awful move by the Raiders.

Holy shit, those dudes talk like Seymour is the final peice of the puzzle in Oakland. I agree their run D was awful and needed help. But Seymour is an injury risk heading into his ninth year in the NFL. How much does he have left? We will see.
