Because of the incredible degree of pessimism going into the season by long time fans. years when the preseason optimism is the highest are the years when we go 4-12 or 6-8 buy low sell high - whats the o/u for jets win this year? any line below 8 -100 is a lock. @ChansiStuckey TEAM MVP 2009:up:
When you look at Bart Scott ripping the ball out of Jacobs' hands, you have to figure that the Jets defense is going to rally around him as we move into the season. The Jets will indeed make the playoffs, because the players are going to play beyond their abilities -- because someone like Bart Scott will be in their face if they don't. You watch, the Jets are going to will themselves into the post season.
Posts like this make me feel ashamed to believe the Jets are going 12-4 this year. I'll stick by my prediction, no matter how ugly they've looked this preseason.
The Jets aren't making the playoffs this year. We will be battling Buffalo for last place. I hope I am wrong, I hope I eat my words, but I can't pretend anymore. First of all where is this great defense I keep hearing about from our ridiculous coach?? The Giants moved the ball at will. If it weren't for dropped passes by their receivers it would have been really ugly. Since Rex is betting the house on our defense, that's not a good sign. And sorry, but the offense is not going to be good. Stuckey and Clowney aren't gonna cut it against good defenses and Keller can't pick up all the slack. I am rooting for Sanchez because we don't have anything else, but rookie QB success is rare. Matt Ryan and Flacco (who wasn't that great) is the anomaly. Rookie QBs struggle and so do their teams typically. Is anybody else tired of Rex and his trash talking before he has even won a regular season game as a head coach?? What's he gonna say after week 2 with NE?? I am tired of the no HCing experience people the Jets keep hiring. Groh, Edwards, Mangini, Ryan. It's not working. Haven't been to the AFC championship since Parcells. The Jets hire this guy when next year these people will be available: Cowher, Shanahan, Gruden, Holmgren. All of them won superbowls. But I will still be watching every Sunday and I hope I am dead wrong.
You're a pessimist. First of all, the first string D only gave up 13 points. That's not bad considering how good the Giants offense played at times. You're insane if you're expecting the Jets to just shut out everyone they play. The Giants found an extreme weakness in the defense yesterday and they exploited it. You're also crazy if you don't expect the Jets to fix that. Second, our offense is going to be a run first offense which is going to take pressure off the passing game. Having a mismatch TE in Dustin Keller takes even more pressure off the wide receivers since it creates outlets all over the field. Same thing goes for Leon Washington. Our offensive line is great, our running backs are great, and our quarterback is going to be a star one day... he has the pedigree to make great things happen, even this season, even if it is erratic. Third, do you really want to go back to the Mangini attitude? If you do then I can't argue with you other than to suggest you see a psychotherapist. Finally, you'll eat your words when Rex is holding the Lombardi trophy above his head in the next few years.
Good post. And even more-so to battle Klecko's problems with our defense...it looked very vanilla last night. Not a lot of sophisticated blitz packages or the things we're expecting from Rex. It's week 3 of the pre-season, there's no need to cook up your best and throw it out there. I'm very confident that week 1 Matt Shaub is going to be running for his life. So confident in fact that I'm breaking the cardinal rule of betting football and taking the Jets who I believe are at -4.
I hope you are right!!! I really do. Yes I am a pessimist, I admit it, but I am allowed because I have watched this team for 30 years, that will do it to you! I am also a realist. Did you see the Giants receiver wide open drop that bomb that hit him right in the hands?? Would have been a sure TD. Harris's INT was a dropped pass deflected that should have been caught. Did you see the run defense, didn't look very good. My point is Rex says it's going to be one of the best in the league, and I am being realistic and saying maybe middle of the pack. By the way Lito Shepard looked like crap, he got beat so many times. You have to be realistic. Your not being realistic about the offense either. Thomas Jones had 16 yards on 12 carries last night. Leon looked good. The pass protection looked terrible. Rex says one of the best O-lines in the league. They are good, but overrated. I love Keller but his blocking is pathetic, and he's not going to be enough to overcome the lack of receivers. You are right I would take Rex over the zombie Mangini was, it's just I don't want to hear his backpedaling week 2 after we lose to NE about no being intimidated by Little Bill and all that crap, because the press is going to be laughing at him in the first month of the season with all his crap about The Jets will be more than this league can handle. It's laughable and you know it. Look at the first 6 games, it's going to be tough. I hope you are right about the Lombardi trophy!! I would love to see a Jets SB while I am still alive!
Consider this, take another receiver in the league who would make that catch... would they necessarily get that open and get that kind of separation? Track stars don't win football games, and Steve Smith showed the hands and concentration of an athlete who is not a football player. That play had more to do with Steve Smith than with the Jets secondary. The offensive line didn't look good at all, but also consider the fact the Giants defensive line has been one of the most disruptive in the NFL over the past 4 or 5 years. They didn't win the Super Bowl just by showing up, they absolutely murdered the Patriots offensive line then, why would it be easy for our line now? Our line is capable of getting the job done. It was the first week they were all back together, and they'll only get better as the season goes on. Offenses always gel and get better as the season goes on.
Listen, I am with you. I want them to win every game and win a Super Bowl, but I am done making excuses for this team, and that is what you are doing now. Consider another receiver... like who? Andre Johnson, Randy Moss, Colston?? These are the receivers early in the season. They are not going to drop that pass, and yes they have the ability to get that separation. Now hopefully Revis is covering and shuts them down, but come on. Remember Flacco hit a deep ball last week as well. The Giants have a great defense yes, but again your making excuses. We are going to play some good defenses this year. Right now we are getting zero blocking from the TE, zero and it was obvious last night. That's a component of the O-line. Brick was getting beat. My point is yes, they will play better, but they may not be elite like Rex says. Just tired of making excuses for this team and I don't want to hear any Rex's excuses after all of his trash talk.
What excuses? I have nothing invested in the team asides from entertainment value. The secondary isn't perfect but what secondary in the league is? Once the regular season begins the Jets defense will be rushing the passer in full force and playing the aggressive style of defense that Rex brings. This is not your grandmother's Jets defense that does "read and react"... aggressive defense is going to bring a lot of great things, but it also means giving up the occasional big play... which is fine, so long as the defensive plays exceed the offensive plays. As for our opinion on the oline, we can agree to disagree for now and see the truth once the real games begin. I think the Jets oline will be elite this year... it's my opinion and I know it could be wrong. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
No way our offensive line is great. Sanchez was hurried on almost every play. IMO our offensive line is the most overrated aspect of our team.
You have to look at the offensive line's body of work over the course of a whole season... being that the entire Jets oline is still together from last year, you can look at their performance last year as a strong indicator of where they will be this year. Last year, they were great. There's no reason to think they won't be this year.
Favre the douchbag was under pressure all the time last year also. This line is overrated. It's good, not great.
I think you're forgetting that our defense isn't bend, don't break. We are very aggressive and our aggressiveness will give up big plays at times, but we'll also make big plays of our own.
Agreed with the pass blocking but Leon makes us look a lot better in the run game then we really are.
Even Thomas "go down on first contact" Jones had 1300 yards last year, so yes, our run blocking is exceptional.
I disagree. Favre was brilliant at the beginning of the season. He was hurt in the second half of the season and his passes and decision making were clearly off. It didn't help matters any that the play calling was atrocious in the second half... too much passing despite how good Jones was playing.
