Not for nothing but Clemens just doesn't look right out there. He hasn't looked comfortable since his hit in the Pats game 2 years ago when he got knocked out. The guy has lousy pocket presence and is a major accident waiting to happen.. I still feel even with the Delay of Game penalties, Sanchez gives us a better chance to win, no matter what he did last night. Clemens just always looks lost. Sanchez does not.
Please allow me to respectfully disagree. First of all it's just pre-season: The best time to make those mistakes is now. Any QB with pressure in his face will make mistakes, and hurry throws and throw interceptions. Tom Brady vs The Giants in the Superbowl...Chad Pennington vs same Ravens defense in playoffs last year...What about Jake Delhomme in the playoffs against the Cardinals? My point is: Veteran QB's with years of NFL experience and all of them better than Sanchez (for now) have been befuddled before, so why so hard on a Rookie with 1 NFL start? A) Ray-Ray did drop an INT for a TD & the Jets caught a break. However, we shouldn't grade rookie QB's during their first start on what could have gone wrong. He is not the first nor the last QB to stare down a receiver. It was Sanchez's fault all the way, but I'm not going to be too hard on a 'could've been' bad play. B) Sanchez's job is to lead the team into the end zone, to points, to victories. Period. I don't care if he hand's the ball off to Washington all the time---so long as it works! Would you be happy if Sanchez shines in a loss or if he is OK in a win? I'll take the latter; pre-season or otherwise I would like to win all the time. The problem is that we are all looking for great plays from Sanchez, when we should be looking for great plays from the entire Jets offense. C) I cannot, nor will not, try to defend the Jets on this one. This is a failure on the Jets and is inexcusable. Same thing with the fumbled play action as well as the pass to Cotchery that he was not expecting. These things need to be cleaned up. D) Here is one reason why Clemens should NOT start. On the interception he threw, he HAD BLOCKING! He walked forward into the O-lineman/D-lineman as they were jostling for position and threw the TERRIBLE pass. Sanchez was run into by Ray Lewis; Clemens walked into pressure! Allow me to say again: Ray came through unblocked...Clemens WALKED INTO A BLOCK! Having a better grasp of the offense doesn't mean he's not a freaking idiot! I do agree that it is not a fair competition; the Jets want Sanchez to win the job...and he will. The only question is: Does Ryan save face and wait until after the Giants game or will he be making the announcement before hand? Prediction: Sanchez will be named the starter by Thursday.
Bottom line is that this team will only go as far as the defence and the running game takes us. I don't think there is a significant difference between using Sanchez or Clemens at this point in their careers, but I believe that Sanchez has significant upside and I would have to think that he will get better as the season progresses. I can't say the same think for Clemens.
You must have read my post from yesterday in which I outlined my own reasons, but yes, he should be named now. Right now. Rex: Do it now and do it often!
I posted this in the other thread but this seems to be the thread of choice now. I find what Martz said interesting and I think he is in a good position to comment. "Rex Ryan could make the announcement today. Or maybe he will wait until next week. Eventually, it's going to be Mark Sanchez's job. What the Jets' coach has to decide is when. Despite a Monday night performance that ranged from jittery to uneven, Sanchez earned points within the Jets' organization for his resilience, overcoming a blow to his pride (an interception on his first pass) and a kick to the head (literally) to lead a touchdown drive against a terrific Ravens defense. Was his encouraging finish - a 19-yard scoring pass to Leon Washington - enough fodder for Ryan to declare an end to the Sanchez-Kellen Clemens competition? Ryan didn't address the media Tuesday. The players were off, and in the dark on the quarterback decision, but the general feeling in the locker room is that the $50 million rookie will be anointed before long. "It looks like Sanchez," one player said Tuesday, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Time is becoming an issue. The Jets open the season in 18 days at Houston. They have only two full practice days before they face the Giants (a likely start for Sanchez), and only two days before closing the preseason against the Eagles" "There were a lot of recognition things in that game for a young quarterback against a great defense that were impressive to me," Mike Martz said Tuesday on a conference call for the NFL Network. "I really do think this is a young man who probably can play as a rookie." The former Rams coach, known as an offensive guru, said Sanchez was victimized by protection breakdowns. On the Ngata interception, Lewis was unblocked on a blitz, giving him a free shot at the rookie. Martz credited Sanchez with knowing where to dump the ball, holding it as long as he could before absorbing the hit. "It wasn't a bad read; (Sanchez) didn't make a mistake," said Martz, who suspects that fullback Tony Richardson was late into his pass route. "You just had a guy who quit rushing the passer and was right there in the throwing lane." Martz said Sanchez made only one bad read, the ball that should've been intercepted by Lewis. On that play, Sanchez locked on his receiver, Chansi Stuckey, never trying to look off the linebackers." http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/fo...tarting_q.html
The answer to both of these statements would be no. Clemens has been in our system and been with the rest of the team for a long while and SHOULD have a better grip on "what is going on," but he doesn't. His INTs are disturbing. They're not rookie INTs, they're possible, future, stink-up-the-field INTs, i.e., poor judgement INTs. As far as Ryan needing to see "what happens in the Giants game," no on that also. In the absense of a clear-cut winner in this QB competition, the edge goes to Sanchez. Clemens has had more than ample time to demonstrate he is starting QB material, and he had all the tools with which to do that (knowledge of Schotty's system, knowledge of many of the plays, playing experience in several off-seasons with players that he's become familiar with) and he has still not demonstrated that he can outplay Sanchez. Again, advantage Sanchez. Sanchez needs to be named the starting QB before the Giants game. Do it now and do it often!
so if you were a colts fan peyton manning wouldve been a bust by the end of his rookie season. anybody remember him being a INT machine when he was in our division before he went on to develop?
Yes and he was playing for a team that went 1-15 the year before, that's how they got him. It wasn't only a QB that team needed. This is a good move to be starting Sanchez now.
oh im not saying to NOT start sanchez. i quoted him for the sentiment of "if he cant cut it as a rookie he cant cut it in NY" im just saying if were going with sanchez hes going to look like a rookie regardless of what pieces we have in place. thats merely all im saying. basically get ready for the typical Jet Fan overreactions when he makes a mistake. i was holding out hope for clemens but sanchez and him are about even. which says enough. i love the fact we drafted Sanchez at a robbery rate and thought he was a great prospect no matter where he went. so I fully support him.
No, I am agreeing with you. He will take his lumps but with the schedule we have this year I think the playoffs would be a tough reach anyway. Might as well get him the experience now.
well i was talking to a co-worker yesterday about the game and i told him. the best thing to take away from that was. That was the toughest defense Sanchez will see all year. albeit for a quarter and a half . but still. the texans are no ravens im more worried about no pace, no ellis, gholston trying to fill a void and stopping Andre Johnson, Owens (Texans TE), and Steve Slaton. although when revis and jenkins return i expect the defense to kick it up.
Manning had an amazing rookie season given the team he inherited. He threw 26 TD passes for a team that had not seen that many TD passes thrown since Earl Morrall in 1971. The INT's came with the territory when you're making that many throws as a rookie. What I remember about Peyton Manning's rookie season was being scared shitless that the next great QB was in the division and he wasn't on the Jets.
