And as Ryan prepares to take his new team against his old one, Ryan is squawking again, calling Monday night's preseason contest against the Ravens (8:00 p.m. ET, ESPN) a "special preseason game." "Let's see if we match up with the elite teams in the league," he said Sunday, per Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News. "You're playing against a great football team, and they're playing against one that's going to be great in the New York Jets. I think that's going to be a great matchup." Um, Rex? It's a preseason game. Which means it's not a game at all. It's glorified, televised practice with full-price tickets. Many think that Ryan's bluster -- which should only get more interesting once the real games start -- is harmless. Others, however, view it as a potential problem. "You're gonna tell me it's not detrimental to the league?" one source observed. "We don't want thugs, but we'll let a coach act like an idiot?" The source pointed out that, just as kids look to players as role models, coaches at lower levels of the sport take cues from the guys at the top of the football food chain. So with Ryan already popping off routinely, other coaches might be inclined to conclude that it's proper to behave that way. There's another intriguing dynamic at play here. The Jets generally have a complex regarding the reality that they're regarded as a rough-and-tumble alternative to the more buttoned-down New York franchise. Ryan only feeds the perception that the Jets have a much rougher exterior than the three-time Super Bowl champs who also inhabit the stadium that bears their name. Indeed, as the source pointed out, "[Giants coach] Tom Coughlin has a temper, but he's a gentleman." Ryan, on the other hand, comes off as a guy who, if not on the sidelines at a Jets game, would be hanging out at Gate D. That said, Ryan's conduct to date pales in comparison to what Raiders coach Tom Cable allegedly did to Randy Hanson's jaw earlier this month. But, hey, there's still plenty of time for Rex to treat one of his coworkers like Kevin Gilbride. --- I don't mind Rex talking smack, but I sure hope he can back it up come the season.

Interesting that this writer is concerned about Ryan's "bluster," and yet seems uninterested in the fact that we have men who have killed people while drunk driving, along with any number of other crimes, playing in the NFL. Another PFT fail.
I think Ryan is trying to forge an identity separate from the rest of the league. I prefer the loudmouth New York Jets over the New England Patriots 2.0.
It's a good question. Even on TGG I see posters who sorta wince and cover their face whenever a new Rex Ryan soundbite comes out, because people are afraid it'll come back and look bad on us "when we lose". C'mon. He's a rookie HC and we've got a rookie QB. Basically all that we can do at this point is talk and get psyched up. I've said it before but I'd rather talk as if I'm a winner and lose, than talk like I'm a loser. I think its all in fun so far, comparing him to a thug is going way too far. The theme this year is swagger. Or as Bart Scott put it, "Swaggerlicious".
This article blows. The guy is trying to change a culture of the team. He's obviously not afriad to ruffle some feathers. If it doesn't start with him, how does he expect his players to play with that killer mentality. Of course, we all hope that it translates well on the field and we fuck teams up in the process of winning OR losing, but Rex Ryan is definitely something this team needed after the huge letdown last year. I'm all for Rex shooting his mouth. I've seen the defensive sample platter they put out last week and so far, I like what I'm seeing. Why shouldn't he/we be excited about that? So 'observe' this and fuck off 'source'. And that's coming from a fan who's had that attitude way before Rex Ryan came into the picture.

This is the only part with which I agree. The rest is opinionated crud. Ryan, like any other coach who's a little liberal with his comments, only hurts or helps himself and the team with his style. If the Jets go 3-13 this year, he looks like a dumbass and gets laughed out of the league. If they go 11-5, he looks like a motivator and great coach. I don't think the league is affected at all either way. The proof will be in the record at the end of the season. And no, these games aren't as important as regular season games, but they do mean something. I couldn't care less whether we win on the scoreboard as long as everyone's play looks good and we hold our own.
