There's just something in the back of my mind telling me to calm down whenever I want to get excited about the upcoming season. Unfortunately I can't put my finger on it! I'm hoping it's just paranoia!
Of course it's paranoia you're a Jets fan arent you. Anyway I don't think it's called paranoia when there really is someone out to get you... Also--the lack of depth at pretty much every unit is unsettling. There's just no margin for error. Injuries if/when they occur will be a big problem, and also lack of late-season fresh legs.
i'm concerned with his clock management and his use of timeouts. these are area's that mangini was good at and herm was terrible. don't want another version of herm edwards.
This thought has crossed my mind too. Rex seems so loosey-goosey, I wonder how he'll handle that aspect of being HC. I suspect there may be a few bumps in the road as he gets comfortable with an aspect of the job he's never been responsible for, but am fairly confident he will learn and grow into those duties. The scary thing about Herm was he NEVER got any better at it. He eventually had to hire Dick Curl (chuckle) to just take care of that for him. Curl was no rocket scientist in that area either though, unfortunately.
Rex Ryan was the one that called timeout against the Pats when they went for it on 4th down and failed against the Ravens in 2007. The timeout gave them another chance and they got a 1st down then scored the game winning TD.
I would say with 99.999% certainly that if anything, the players won't walk all over him. He may suck as a HC but he doesn't strike me as the type of guy that's going to back down.
I'm looking forward to the Jets playing an attacking style of defense. Mangini was far too much of a "play to not lose guy" instead of a guy who goes after a team. In that respcet his defense reminded me a lot of Herm's. Ryan, for better or worse, should be the exact opposite. Its gonna be a hell of a fun season to watch.
It'll be interesting to see what happens after Houston week 1. That very well could be a game that the Texans put up alot of points and everyone will be saying we thought Rex was coming in to bring a better defense.
Houston is on the verge of breaking out. That offense is great, with Andre Johnson and Walter on the outside, Slaton at RB, a good TE in Daniels, good Oline. All they need is decent consistent QB play, meaning Shaub must stay healthy and take the next step.
A month or two ago i bought a copy of Madden 09 as i've always had a passing interest in the NFL, it was second hand and i thought i'd give it a go. Picked to play as the Jets as i figured if i ever go to America it'll probably be New York, and they seem to be the underdogs of the two options! Basically long story short i realised, literally earlier today, that just from playing Madden 09, a lot, i've learnt so much about the NFL and have grown from being kind of attached to the Jets because they remind me of the green (my favourite) power ranger when i was young for some inexplicable reason, to being an actual fan. But being a complete noob i have a lot to learn, so someone start me off, what's with all the excitement about the defense?
Admittedly, this is a major "monday morning quarterback" assessment of '08, but what if Rex Ryan were coach last year and his "D" mindset (even with last year's roster) were on the sideline for last year's game against: - the Jets @ Raiders - the Jets @ Seahawks? For starters: ironically (from an offensive standpoint), I'd have thunk Rex would've gone for the "6" on the opening drive vs. Seattle... and as for the Raider game, I'd like to think he'd have pushed the "D" envelope during that frustrating 2nd half,......trying to get the strong, yet inexperienced Demarcus Russell to 'spit the bit' on 3rd down....a la Lance M....vs. Plunkett... Again, just my opinion, those were games that imho should not have been lost...again imho, the better team lost both times. Now, using the Rex-Jets 2009 as a model vs. the '08 Titans (at Nashville), would the '09 Rex-Jets have beaten the 2008 Titans in Nashville the way they did in '08 with their '09 Mark Sanchez-Kellen Clements-Eric Ainge QB tandem handling the offense? ... even with their '09 "D" additions taken into consideration? 2009: I'm not sure. And I can live with that. 2010? I'm thinking (draft-bolstered/year under their belt) yes. I'm sure this is reading clear-as-mud but...just a thought..I'm thinking: '2010' Looking at the previous group of coaches?.....I'm giving 'chubbsie-ubbsie' some serious "rope"
It's an attack from all sides on every play, aggressive, smash mouth, pain issuing style defense. Something us Jets fans have been craving for a very long time. BTW - welcome to the board and welcome to the club!!
Thanks man! Seriously well excited for the first preseason game just to see how it goes, annoying over here i'll only have highlights though!
I'm with you on this. As much as I want to see us rack up the W's this season, no matter how the record eventually ends up, I'm just hoping that we will finally see an end to the soft "play not to lose" style of coaching that this franchise has been plagued by of late. Nothing could be more disheartening to the fans than another season of that sh*t. If we're gonna go out, let's go out with all guns blazing. :metal:
#1 thing Ryan has brought to this team, which was missing, is balls. Keeping up the blitz on the Pats last drive, leaving every CB on an island and forcing guys to step up, priceless!
Know who's jersey I would really want if I could get one? Rex Ryan's. If anyone is responsible for this 2-0 start its him. This is a VERY different Jets team than I've ever seen, bar 1998 perhaps. I'm very impressed, and usually not easily so when it comes to this shitty organization.
