What if he's the next Tony Romo? There are a lot of QBs who are drafted late or undrafted that end up being decent. Not saying he is, but he has size, a good arm, and while I doubt he's ever a good starter in the league, he'll get a backup job at some point in his career and probably start when the starter goes down.
You're right...some are decent. Only decent though. Mark Sanchez has the potential to be a great, franchise quarterback, while Ratliff will only be great at holding a clipboard.
Not saying Romo is a great QB. He's just the first name that popped into my head when I thought of undrafted QBs. I'm curious to see how he does this year. I've seen him do plenty of good things and plenty of bad things, and he definitely has talent. And either way, where you're drafted matters when you first come into the league, and it shows you showed a lot of potential in college, but plenty of guys have proven scouts wrong. Ratliff could be one of those guys. I doubt he'll ever be a star, but he could be a serviceable or better starting QB. Or he could be nothing.
I think it would be a cool story to see him succeed, but I'd have to see more than just hype about a preseason game to think the guy is going to make it. Half this board was salivating at the chance to get Clowney on the field last year and now most of those people want to see him burned at the stake. Sometimes hype is just hype. Especially when it comes to Jets QB's that ride the bench. The guy on the bench is always the answer.
