I got to thinking that we haven't had a slot receiver like Wes Welker since Chrebet(my all time favorite Jet).

Is there a player on our team that can fill that role?

    My sleeper is "Danny Woodhead"

    Welker 5' 9" 185lbs
    Woodhead 5'7 195lbs

    Chrebet a towering 5'10" 188lbs.

Does 2 or 3" really make a big difference for a slot receiver? He is also heavier, and faster? So does that mean he is thicker, and can hold up to the punishment? I don't know!!!!

    Thoughts?

Stuckey seems like a perfect slot guy to me, unfortunately he may have to play outside because we're so thin at WR.

    Isn't Danny Woodhead a RB?

Anything is possible look at Maurice Drew Jones and Darren Sproles though there Running Backs they do go out of passes and once they got the ball there elusive.. To me i thinks its harder for a 6'2-6'6 Guy to get a square hit on a 5'6 - 5'7 guy because they have to come down to there level to hit em.. IMO i think next years draft if we could get Shipley out of Texas or I dont know if anybody picked up Eric Morris out of Texas Tech he was pretty good too.. Both of them have 4.4 speed or better..

Leon can fill that role just fine, and Stuckey can split the time at the slot WR. Keller will have to line up wide in that situation tho.

does it have to be a white guy?

in all seriousness i think every single guy mentioned was a white guy. other than stuckey who would be a very good slot guy.

we really havent run enough 3 wides for anyone to be a decent slot guy on the jets since before herm, who LOVED to put the fullback in the slot while having moss on the sideline.

Stuckey looked like a good slot guy in spurts last season. In a perfect world Clowney makes a push at the deep threat role and Stuckey plays the slot... but this isn't a perfect world and I don't expect both to pan out.

Stuckey should be fine in the slot the question is if Clowney can handel the number 2 spot. A lot of things I read still say we are going to try to pick up a WR by the end of the summer. I thought it would have happened by now. It is nerver racking not knowing if our WR corp is going to be a joke or not this year.

I'm also more confident with Stuckey as our #2 WR, thats because he actually had a full year of playing time and experience as a 2nd year player/1st year starter for us in the slot last year.

He also showed us alot of promise, potential and talent @ times during the season and if anything... I just keep in mind that Cotchery had a breakout season in 2006 as a 1st year starter when just about everyone had no faith in Cotchery.

Actually a lot of people wanted to see what Cotchery had. A lot of people on this board shit on Herm for never giving him a chance despite his performance in pre-season.

If this makes anyone feel better...I can not pitcure either Clowney or Stuckey not putting up better numbers and production from our Slot WR position than what Dwight/Smith did for us in 2006, when we actually made the playoffs with two rookies on the O-Line, Barlow and Blaylock as our 1-2 punch with, a career 3rd string player starting @ the RT position in Anthony Clement.

Tim Dwight played in 9 games, 15 catches, 112 yards with 0 TD's.
Brad Smith played in 16 games, 9 catches, 61 yards with 0 TD's.

That was an average of only 1.5 catches, 10.8 yards with 0 TD's per game back in 2006 from our slot WR position.

Well, I guess I'm forgetting about Justin McCareins who played in 16 games, 23 catches, 347 yards with 1 TD.

So, Dwight, Smith and McCareins combined for only 47 catches, 520 yards with only 1 TD on the year...Thats an average of 2.9 catches 32.5 yards with 0.00625 TD's per game during 2006 from our Slot WR positon.

Heck, Stuckey had 32 catches, 359 yards with 3 TD's himself last year as a 2nd year player/1st year starter-I'm not all that worried about our slot WR position this year and thats because I feel we will be a run first team behind our O-Line that ranked #5 in average yards per rush for our backs last year.

Big Poppa Naich, why get literal?

    Think outside the box.

    Even though you are right.

The undersized great white hope can't always catch slant like the pride of Hempstead used to.

Prettttttty much. Kind of reminds me of when Herm was HC and people would compare every white safety we drafted to John Lynch.

Yep. The Jets really need to find a way to get Leon a solid 12-15 touches a game at this point. They have no prayer of keeping him in the mid range roleplayer salary slot, because if he ever hits the open market somebody is going to pay him like Brian Westbrook. So in that scenario they'd be much better just realizing what they have in him, paying him at that level, and then making sure he gets 3-4 KR's, 8 carries and 3-4 pass receptions a game. It's what a smart franchise would do without thinking about it too hard.

I thought you'd see it my way too.

    ------------------------------------------

Jokes aside, Jets can still disguise their shotgun play with I formation personnel. They really have to draw that card some time in the 4th quarter, and rip the game wide open with a few KO punches.
